The sudden appearance of a youth with bare crimson back caused minor surprises from both sides. However, within the moment, the mercenaries slowly calmed, for seeing he was human, they believed he definitely wouldn’t side with the serpent folk. The snake tribe, however, stared at Xiao Yan as an unwelcome intruder and grew intensely angered. Their head leader, whose pupils were in triangle form scanned Xiao Yan’s figure coldly before lifting his hand silently. Two snake tribe members of roughly Five-Star Dou Zhe rank instantly surged forward swiftly with their tails lashing angrily towards Xiao Yan.
Lifting his gaze, Xiao Yan caught sight of the faintly metallic odor in the wind and subtly frowned. With his fingers slightly tightening around the Heavy Black Sci-Mace, the youth calmly and gradually lifted his foot off from the sand and fiercely struck the ground. His figure instantly transformed from static to the fastest motion—it became a streak zipping with lightning speed before all gazes, slicing swiftly past the two serpent attackers.
“Pou! Pou!”
As the moment swiftly passed, the figures of Xiao Yan and the two serpentine warriors intersected for an instant before the youth paused abruptly mid motion. On the other hand, the two serpents—faces bristle with malice only moments prior—suddenly endured a massive pressure upon their chests. Their forms jolted and crashed backwards dragging along the sand with torrents of fresh, warm human fluids gushing forcefully from their mouth. Their limp corpses flew tens of paces through mid-air, like leaves caught in tempest winds.
The grip around Xiao Yan’s Black Sci-Mace slightly relaxed. With his tongue gently moistening his lips, he flicked a glance over to the two severely injured opponents flung afar by just a simple strike with the massive weapon. Even if not dead outright, it was certain that their injuries from the impact would render them in grave, near-mortal states.
“Hssss…”
From sudden encounter towards their rapid defeat by blood-spraying and retreating, it transpired within barely over ten seconds yet decisively concluded. Upon witnessing Xiao Yan’s thunderous dominance in battle, every one of over a dozen mercenaries stood, mouths half agape with expressions awash in shocked disbelief. As for the youth’s seemingly fragile frame—no way could they ever perceive a figure with such extraordinary strength lay concealed therein.
“This brat… He’s so brutal!”
The curvaceous female warrior murmured in quiet astonishment toward that image—one who had swatted away opponents, just as one might crush nuisance insects with careless might.
“Heh, Xue Lan. Are you alright?” A male mercenary’s voice boomed happily from upon the dunes, as he rushed downhill upon an injured leg. Cautiously circling around several serpent folk, he arrived beside his companions. His expression radiated excitement.
“Dan Zi… You weren’t supposed to find reinforcements from the Stone Desert City already left, so why are you still here?” Glancing upwards towards this male warrior whom she referred as Dan Zi, the sultry woman called Xue Lana arched her elegant brow slightly in agitation.
Scolded by her words, Dan Zi gave an apologetic chuckle; he raised his hand instead, gesturing toward behind Xiao Yan, explaining, “Hey look there—isn’t that already someone having arrived as support?”
“What, *he* is the backup?” Upon hearing him, Xue Lan blinked once bewildered, casting skeptical eyes toward Xiao Yan, questioning,“He doesn’t belong to our Moh Tie Mercenaries at all—how’d he get involved here? Did you strike a deal with him first?”
“I honestly didn’t know him personally either. It was just an unforeseen collision where fate initially introduced our presence. Honestly, I planned nothing beyond begging him into contacting for aid from the city—,”
A slight sense of awkwardness flustered on Dan Zi’s cheeks slightly:
“To tell you truth—initially, he seemed completely indifferent towards my presence. But then later, once mentioning my association from Moh Tie Warriors… His behavior immediately altered. He willingly offered me several toxic-antidotal pills and medicinal remedies.”
Xue Lan delicately brushed strands of wind-blown silken hair behind her ear before continuing thoughtfully: “Do I detect some potential connection between him and Moh Tie Mercenaries? Honestly though, I have never heard my leader mention him having ties with a youth of such formidable talent. Judging by just the degree of power displayed by him in action, he should perhaps attain above Eighth Level Dou Zhe status at *least*!”
Her beautiful facial expression scrunched together momentarily puzzled: “Still strange, for such a mysterious person suddenly appearing before us without precedent; it’s not as though there’d been murmurs across nearby towns announcing any new rising force, right.”
Yet the youth beside her only shrugged, muttering helplessly, “Well, to that degree though… It’s hard to judge what true intentions he might have harbored, wouldn’t it? Perhaps he genuinely means good? Otherwise… would he even risk his life merely on rescuing ourselves as his primary concern?”
Xue Lan slightly nodded yet her voice dipped slightly in concern: “Though… Let us first worry about surviving ourselves rather than others. Within this opposing force lie the dangerous ranks—their forces contain no less *three* Dou Warrior Nine Star members—may well the result turn worse… what if neither he, nor we, actually escape from what we came seeking rescue from.”
At hearing this, realization hit Dan Zi. He offered a faint uneasy smile as reassurance: “I figure… Surely enough he would handle himself adequately. Remember—I mentioned the opposing force to him *very upfront* about serpent numbers—unless he was fully capable, surely no ordinary fool would dare charging foolishly into something so deadly.”
“And by suggesting your proposition—do you now claim him as Battle Sect Level, an actual ‘fighter’?!” she shot back cynically.
“Well…” Dan Zi opened his mouth as his words suddenly seized, hesitated slightly: “Despite trusting him more than anyone—though possessing such an impressive power level—it’d still be quite the assumption, wouldn’t it? Considering merely his age? A young age not above twenty? How realistically could he reach Dou Warrior status before even attaining two decades?”
Exhaling deeply in helplessness, Dan Zi mumbled: “Sigh… Only time would tell. Perhaps deep inside… perhaps maybe even now he might be one himself.”
Xue Lana listened silently, finally giving a deep frown before finally shaking her head resigned.
The leading serpent, witnessing his subordinates so easily defeated, watched Xiao Yan’s movements with constricting eye shapes, his crimson snake tongues slithering dangerously around as he spat out venomously: “Daring trespass our domain in the Tangar Desert, human fool—you’ve picked the most ill-fated path!”
Xiao Yan smiled ever so softly as the youth shifted his weight holding a slanted black mace but didn’t deign to respond.
“If wisely inclined,” the leader spat with disdain, warning darkly, “turn back right now—perhaps mercy to forgive you’d remain within bounds.”
Xiao Yan offered one more smile then shook head slowly—two tiny syllabics that came forth without negotiation:
“…Apologies…”
“Die!”
Spurned by refusal and contemptuous dismissal, hatred darkened across scaled face. With another cold signal motion, command roared:“Attack together—kill him, take the women—we will treat ourselves!”
“Hs!”
The hissing sounds reverberated all through their forces; after slight hesitation due merely out of human instinct against such a strong presence as Xiao Yan’s, they obeyed immediately, spitting their long forked tongues and raising pointed viper spears, moving rapidly in from behind.
“Keep the injured stationary,” snapped Xue Lan while giving sharp command, “The rest! We charge with Xiao Yan.”
Yet to her commands Xiao Yan’s brow twitched slightly in dissatisfaction. Turning with a faint expression of disappointment and slight exasperation he uttered: “No need—it’d only interfere with your clumsy aid. Remain where you are.”
“You…” Hearing the dismissal, poised and ready, she halted. With an incredulous, rising fury she was barely stopped short from barking a rebuke, reminding herself forcibly *he alone might determine any survival*. Suppressing an urge to shout angrily, she finally stomped her foot sharply, casting an icy glare in frustration.
“What nonsense is he pulling? Just a child and yet he dares act so self-sufficient.”
The glarion moment passed shortly enough as soon as an awe-inspiring sight seized the moment. Xiao Yan remained in position; his figure still save that the faintest glimmers—beginning a light aura—manifested.
Moments later, Xiao Yan exhaled and, barely waiting for silence, purple flame began manifesting outward from thin vapor, then formed an armor that completely clothed his presence in radiant layers around him. The energy cloaked him wholly—winds stirring at his aura’s outer fringes, wisps of strange, vivid violet flame flared with an unusual, mysterious quality.
“Hs…”
In the crowd, all sucked in shocked gasps involuntarily seeing Xiao Yan don this energy attire upon his body with clear signs of transformation.
“This…” The widened eyes of Xue Lana stared at Xiao Yan’s covered frame, her expression showing immense unbelief. “*Dou Qi clothes* already? Just exactly how powerful—how ancient his cultivation? Could he really be a real Battle Sect already?”
Staring in stunned silence, nobody dared breathe deeply for fear that might disrupt.
“So monstrous a talent…”
Danzi murmured breathless at the youth before them: “So incredibly precocious to have already risen above mortal tiers into becoming *a Dou Warrior* before turning an age as youthful as he’s at! Not many of equal strength even in our own leaders exceed *merely to Fifth-Rank Battle Sect*!”
He added grimly after realizing Xiao Yan’s potential:“What a blessing it is for having this brat come forward so recklessly charging into danger… All this because of *one Battle Sect* individual, huh? Just imagining ourselves left to the whims of fate otherwise is too frightful…”
Another mercenary murmured thoughtfully beside, adding with some mixture of admiration, fear, or even hidden relief: “So just who on earth *is* this small prodigy that emerges seemingly from a mysterious hidden sect in no known urban territory across these desert territories?”
Yet again others exchanged bewildered stares before only shaking heads cluelessly in response.
Seeing their reaction with helplessness and dry chuckle Xue Lana added off-hand while musing: “Never mind his origins for now anyway—either way seems like we all just struck an unimaginables stroke of fortune in receiving his aid today…”
Meanwhile, seeing Xiao Yan manifest that distinct Dou Qi Attire, even the attackers found their momentum shaken significantly; all serpent attackers instantly became clearly aware—the *significance and threat* the sudden escalation implied in one’s strength.
This one… *A real Battle Sect fighter*—on an entirely different battlefield echelon compared to common ranks such as those of Dou Zhe. Ordinary skills could barely stand comparison against a true high level fighter.
But even so, *were the two serpent tribe’s strongest nine-star level members going be adequate to face against his terrifying form?*
As Dou Qi Attire formed completely onto himself, Xiao Yan inhaled deeply while gripping firmly the massive mace again before turning with a chilling sneer.
Watching opposing creatures visibly shaken he charged again; one heavy step resonated outwards as the youth blurred, his form vanishing instantly from view as he shot forward along sand.
Like bolt of lightning he appeared in an eye’s blink before one nine-star snake. The youth remained indifferent with his emotionless gaze, but the massive mace he held—charged with fierce force—came crashing fiercely down onto the serpent’s wide chest with an explosion-like sound.
As the impact struck the target, a loud dull crunch echoed briefly while the reptilian eyes widened in sheer horror, then erupted with explosion of warm fluids of blood and shattered flesh expelled heavily from chest; the beast’s lifeless torso was thrown forcibly like flying cannon balls before plunging directly and heavily buried underneath tall dunes.
The attack had struck far faster than the enemy could even attempt any resistance. Thus the youth demonstrated a dominance so absolute; the gap was already a chasm so wide there existed virtually *none*.
Then—Xiao Yan twisted in mid air, shifting direction towards other opponents nearby still at *fourth or fifth* Dou Zhe rank. Now the mace transformed like an instrument of execution, a simple hammering tool that sent those desperate figures in flight with gorges spurting from within their chests, their defeated limbs flailing helplessly in retreat—defeat was absolute.
Studied by stunned and open eyes wide of Xue Lan and companions alike—this single youth fought entirely alone on his own and with ease wiped them off the battle.
Yet surely even the bravest fighter at the Battle Sect rank could not have *achieved such an incredible one-man victory*, defeating an adversary force where three Nine-Star opponents existed, only one encounter resulting in a swift and shocking loss in *a full rank*, several lower foes eliminated besides.
Everyone remained in absolute shock at this surreal and impossible display before eventually, with helpless glances toward each other and shaking heads, the overwhelming belief settled upon them: this prodigy must clearly possess strength far beyond ordinary Battle Sect.
Watching a shocking turn of events—where just within such a single flash already their force sustained unbearable losses—the head serpent narrowed his slitted pupils, blood thirst flickering dangerously while his sharp fangs revealed themselves.
Silent communication between him and the last unscathed nine-star snake comrade sealed the decision.
Without further words both charged simultaneously. Their serpenit tails coiling around them, they assumed a ‘V’ formation; charging forward violently with sharp venomous blades poised for destruction.
Clearly experienced in combined tactics, their attacks were well-rehearsed and perfectly complementary—one would fein, another strikes… A dangerous tandem duo.
Their blades lunged forward with deadly intent toward him; their movements devious; while within those edges a thin coating—dark red with lethal poison.
With his last foe dispatched in one heavy swing, an intense rush of frigid pressure shot toward his back; Xiao Yan didn’t hesitate for even a millisecond, as his black mace swept powerfully in reverse.
A series of *Dongs echoed outward*, deflect a pair of incoming snake pikes in their deadly strike—however this wasn’t all as the twin-serpents, synchronized perfectly as though bound by a mental link simultaneously opened their gaping maws, discharging a twin jet-like cloud of putrid, sickly green gases directly towards Xiao Yan at near point blank range!
A sharp voice rang aloud among the battlefield—
“Beware poisoned fumes!!”
Xue Lana cried sharply.
Her voice cut through but too slow. As the warning still echoed within the distance—the Dou Qi flame armor surged outward from around young Xiao Yan, instantly cloaking and protecting his entire figure.
The toxic fog clashed with violet inferno armor. The second they touched, scorching violet embers flamed outward. As contact was maintained, the poison dissolved—dispell into vapor and ascending slowly like wisps of evaporation into the sky, fading entirely.
Calmly resisting this deadly attack while retaining his coolness, Xiao Yan pivoted abruptly as his soles impacted the sand. The movement sent his figure soaring forth instantaneously straight toward the lead serpent with deadly efficiency in a near-invisible blur.
Xuan Mace swept upward in rapid motion—before the lead serpent leader managed any meaningful resistance or escape attempt, Xiao Yan’s figure bursted through a lingering haze of poisoned gas surrounding the enemy’s position and landed just in front him.
Xuan Heavy mace descended with bone-snapping force aimed for its final crushing blow to the serpents cranium.
This unexpected maneuver caused the serpent’s composure to shatter—desperately his serpentine tails lashed in panic and contorted violently in attempt dodging. In frantic motion, he writhed back in serpent fashion through the sands by a few feet—barely avoiding Xiao Yan’s deadly overhead slash.
Yet evading once couldn’t secure survival, for barely escaping the crushing blow, his tail whipped desperately to retreat once more. However—bare seconds into this back pedal attempt… A sudden and overwhelming pulling force shot forth from the palm of Xiao Yan’s right hand with violent momentum. Caught unguarded in retreat—he was instantly seized and pulled forward against his will like baited fish hooked and reeled.
Xiao Yan’s icy eyed gaze locked upon this flying reptile’s panicking countenance once he approached near range—his lips parted in mocking scorn and the youth exploded upwards through sheer force—shooting forward with predatory precision and lightning swiftness, ascending skywards and then maneuvering effortlessly through air and reappeared above the head serpent.
With both hands grasping tightly to Xuan Black Mace, Xiao Yan came descending with unstoppable momentum—the heavy downward slash crashing down and cleaving a massive, crimson arc straight towards the scaled enemy skull directly into it.
“Pou!!”
Blood and grey matter rained down through the desert breeze—an upper torso segment separated cleanly, violently hurled towards dune base before finally slammed into dry sand pits below, instantly buried from existence as loose golden sands rapidly covered it.
At witnessing the head serpent’s demise, last surviving nine-star ranked serpent fighter gazed at it, his expression filled with disbelief, followed by a slow build-up—horror and panic taking over its composure. Releasing a shrill, piercing screech—the reptilian foe immediately lunched itself toward fleeing the area in haste!
Xuanyan however, refused mercy or reprieve. His figure mid-air twisted mid-air sharply—he rotated mid-flight generating spinning torque.
Then—while suspended—released a deadly throw. The massive black mace sailed outward, soaring through sky like a scythe—zoomed after the retreating prey.
*Pukk!*
The weapon of dark death struck, cutting through its neck instantly; a jet of crimson exploded into the air followed by the heavy corpse of the once mighty predator slouching lifelessly into the sands… The Xuan Mace still stood erect within its impaled skull in deep burial; its handle barely exposed above golden sands.
He finally descended to Earth. His sole sank deeply nearly a half step under forceful entry onto sand surface. Exhaling softly, the youth lifted it and strolled forward, retrieving the Xuan Black Sword. He slowly wiped the crimson blood cleanly and sheathed the weapon behind his back. Then finally with a calm stride, he approached toward the shocked band behind him, standing motionless within eerie silences.
Approaching closer, Xiao Yan stopped before the curvilicious female figure with smile lighting his handsome face, inquiring lightly— “Hello, none severely hurt you all?”
“No… no…” Responded in barely a whisper—the beautiful eyes drifted over his bare toned chest, yet her expression remained composed; after years wandering in rugged mercenary groups within an unreined desert lifestyle, Xue Luna wasn’t one known to easily succumb in shyness. Unlike typical noble-born damsels with modest shroudings around their presence, exposing male upper body flesh rarely drew her usual reactions or flush her features crimson red.
Meeting Xiaoyan straight in face with a brief flicker of interest still in eyes, a slow smile grew at ends of her lips as she murmured— “Regardless your reasons for intervening on our behalf, let me still extend gratitude. Without doubt we may suffer a fate most unpleasant today—May I introduce: Xue Lan—leading this small exploration faction, while simultaneously serving an affiliated division of Moh Tie Mercenary Grouping.”
“My name? Xiao Yan”, answered with same smile and nod towards female figure before him.
Xiao Yan? The name rang a vague familiarity—Xue Lana furrowed brow slightly, musing over her internal thought banks—searching her memory’s recesses for the face that should perhaps accompany it before finally conceding to helplessness in recollection’s absence—and with slight frustration shake head with smile upward—“Tell me, where might you head after? If circumstances allow it—Perhaps an invitation to the Stone Desert City may I offer? The Moh Iron Mercenaries follow the principle *of debt gratitude reciprocated.* Since your help rendered—your due recompense is well deserved!”
“Distance from this point isn’t far at all—the Stone Desert City lies within a mere span of about half hour travel. It’s unlikely an excessive delay for you.”
Sensing a potential refusal approach in near future, she hastened herself—hurling in finalizing persuasion swiftly with an added sentence.
At hearing her, Xiao Yan nodded lightly with agreement. As he already possessed plan to travel back toward Stone Desert—naturally to make contact *with older sibling mentors,* he sought. Over recent years, due to personal career demands, they spent little time at their clan’s home, the deep affection held throughout earlier youth could never be diluted. Back at Xiao Clan mansion, aside from father and *Xun Erling,* there remained these brothers. Who treated him with tenderness more than any other.
“Wonder whatever *Xun’er* would be like…”
As thought arose unexpectedly—the memory image rose—a gentle image draped in pale green robes; soft and ethereally serene.
His emotions quivered deeply within his chest at the recollections. Through this past year his entire existence became submerged deep inside the demanding routines of grueling self-training—but now, amidst idle reflection after intense battle his mind had returned back, his heart now heavy with longing for her he hadn’t seen.
Letting forth another slow sigh, he finally opened mouth to speak—gazing past the broken battlefield.
A young girl drifted within his internal eye’s vision in sky’s horizon—arms folded behind back—lightness in each flowing motion. An intense urgency to escape his prolonged martial training and rush toward the *Ga Nan Learning Institution* overpowered rational thought. Yet the thought’s fleeting nature didn’t persist; shaking his head violently, he attempted to forcefully suppress that inner urge buried back under control. The girl before had countless deep unknowns about her life story… should she find him weaker during their meeting, he likely found himself feeling painfully insufficient in comparison.
After long years adventuring across various realms in search of experience and self-betterment, Xiao Yan’s mind gradually awakened to understanding value of those extremely precious and rare mid-rank cultivation scrolls—yet during prior encounters within Xiao Clan halls, *Xin’er* casually tossed toward him merely one piece among various scrolls of mid-rank high class techniques.
This realization, combined with further reflections of Xun’er’s personal cultivation rate—*what stage might she have reached in just the passing single year?*
“Haha—Could she have progressed so much past Me? Possibly even attained *higher* stages in her martial advancement?”
Exhaled deeply again with slight melancholic chuckle, scratching slightly on his nose bridge. A sudden surge of selfish pride surfaced amidst these deep musings.
“Haha—even after all these years spent training with the single goal of becoming as *great* as she—it still surprises myself I was *that* foolish young lad once upon time back in day… Simply seeking to test out for myself whether *this particular technique* would actually manifest any effect…”
“Yet… why exactly did I stick to this trial training method *year* after *year*, *never* giving up?”
“Could it be deep down I secretly planned *something nefarious* upon poor defenseless Xun’er?”
“How absurd!! Impossible! That’s completely unthinkable!!!”
Suddenly his mind spiraled with these absurd self-reflections—resulting only him muttering to himself like a mildly deranged soul.
Meanwhile the Xue Lana tilted her head as watched him, silent and pensive—seeing that strange array of emotions shift subtly over Xiao Yan face. A strange moment of quiet passed.
Then curiosity piqued, cautiously she approached him: “Hey…”
She lightly elbowed him gently once: “You okay?”
“Ahh…?”
Slight confusion filled his initial response to her gesture—however the sudden return to realty snapped the young man upright.
Turning to face to others, realization dawned and slightly embarrassed chuckles emerged from him apologetically.
“Ahh—Forgive. Got lost for just short bit; I’m completely in reality again now—Nothing the matter.”
Once again returned fully within the moment, Xue Lana slightly shook off her momentary confusion from observing such strange manner in front of her, shifting again onto the more immediate matter:
“So—If nothing pressing—Should I initiate our journey back into Stone Desert City now? Would that be suitable?”
She directed to him, once again assuming a slight air of command yet in friendly manner all the same this time.
“Great—Haha,” he agreed with his charming smile.
“Fei Gao, haul the carriage horses forth immediately!”
With a firm gesture—Xue Lana swiftly passed another order to one of companions.
“Understood!” Came the obedient call.
One among the mercenaries—nodding in understanding—immediately disappeared within nearby dunes. Moments later he reemerged having successfully summoned a four legged caravan pulled by sturdy camel-horse steeds of dunes. The moment the vehicle rolled beside them, both Xiao Yan and companions laid eyes for the first time upon its loaded cargo—behind on a compartment two corpses of one rank Magical Creatures laid in place still—drying upon crimson stains indicating freshness suggesting only recent defeat.
The camel-horse transport wasn’t anything overly extravagant in structure. However—due the current full storage being utilized strictly for the recently slain Magical Creature, naturally—utilizing space to serve as transport *was out the question*. The only solution—everyone traveled by foot.
Addressing to her camel-horse handler Xue Lana commanded again: “You take our hunting trophies, and return back to Stone Desert City immediately and report this entire event directly back to leader headquarters!”
“As you command!”
Fei Gao smiled happily in assuring acknowledgment, promptly giving swift command of his feet to propel themselves forwards and galloping in full sprint through desert, towards the distant silhouette of civilization known across sands—the Stone Desert City.
Upon the fast disappearance, Xiao Yan watched momentarily amused expression flickered before smoothly from within his personal Ring Storage accessory a change set of apparel summoned to replace his current upper body exposed form. With efficient motions, it was rapidly placed on; thereafter without wasted motion Xiao Yan strode toward direction left behind by retreating vehicle carriage, initiating forward journey himself first.
Upon observing Xiao Yan beginning his trek, the commanding feminine figure known—*Xue Lana’s* quick command echoed forth among her underlings—urging the rest to quicken their step in joining.
Suddenly with the preparations nearing completion—*Dan Zei* called while packing remaining materials:
“Hey Captain—you realize something intriguing? Does Xiao Yan happen somewhat resembles to those senior leader commanders a tad?”
“Eh?”
At hearing the strange question she initially blinked, puzzled expression briefly before slowly directing eyes upon the back image of Xiao Yan.
After brief inspection, realization lit upon internal recollection—her expression suddenly changed.
She suddenly whispered to herself:
“That’s it! wasn’t the commanders who spoke to me often once—mentioning possessing *a younger brother*?!”
“Ehh… yes, that’s actually something remembered… The young fellow with strange fluctuations stuck within lower Dou Zhe stage? Haha.” Responded his colleague humorously.
“Now thinking of that—you remember now: the so-called *commander’s sibling*… wasn’t also named… Xiao Yan!!?” Realization clicked upon *Xue Lana’s* lips with a whispery echo in final confirmatory note—the slow blinking of long lashes along her beautiful features followed—alongside a gentle wetting motion her glossy red lips executed.
Then—a short pause in realization…
Her visage—gradually—became washed over *not by recognition* any further—but something else…
Overwhelming **shock!**
—To be followed by silence thereafter.
