Chapter 988: Pursuit and Annihilation

Outside the Bone Transforming City, a streak of light flashed past like lightning, diving instantly into the continuous mountains beyond. Nalan Jie’s bony wings pushed to their limit, and Xiao Yan’s speed soared to a rather terrifying degree. Yet, as he dashed, his expression remained somewhat gloomy. Although he didn’t sense Fei Tian pursuing him, he didn’t think that the old man, who looked quite young, would so easily give up. “How did this old fellow find me? I’ve been traveling in deep mountains and forests all this time; it’s impossible for the Wind Lightning Pavilion to have discovered me.” While dashing, a sliver of doubt arose in Xiao Yan’s heart. This northern region of the Central Plains was so vast; even with immense abilities, Fei Tian could not just randomly fish him out of the crowd. Moreover, judging by his current actions, he clearly knew where Xiao Yan was. Could it be that when he entered the city yesterday, he was detected by the scouts of the Wind Lightning Pavilion? But even so, he had already moved out of the Wind Lightning Pavilion’s domain. Even if he were truly discovered, it would take more than a day for the information to reach the Wind Lightning North Pavilion…

The doubts in his mind resurfaced, and Xiao Yan felt a growing sense of danger. The old man seemed casual, but he genuinely felt a dangerous sensation from him. Such a feeling, aside from those two unfathomable seniors from the Inner Academy and the Earth Demon Old Ghoul, was rarely felt with others.

“The old fellow’s strength is at least an eighth-star Battle Sect. Even if I borrow the power of the Heavenly Fire Venerable, I’d still struggle to confront him directly unless I use the Destroying Fire Lotus. But that’s my last resort; I shouldn’t use it unless absolutely necessary…”

Xiao Yan’s thoughts raced, but his speed didn’t slow down. He sped like a meteor across the sky, disappearing in the blink of an eye at the horizon.

“Has that old fellow… really given up on chasing me?” After flying furiously for almost ten more minutes and seeing no one in pursuit, Xiao Yan’s brow furrowed tighter, muttering softly.

“Old chap said you can’t escape…” As Xiao Yan muttered, a faint laughter suddenly drifted from not far ahead. Xiao Yan’s body froze, and he quickly lifted his head, his pupils contracting as he fixed his eyes on the peak of a mountain ahead. There, Fei Tian, robed in silver, stood with his hands behind his back. His silver-white eyes, filled with mockery, gazed at Xiao Yan.

“What terrifying speed from that old fellow…” Xiao Yan drew a sharp breath, his expression becoming serious. Today, it seemed, might indeed be a significant trouble.

“Even with your Three Thousand Thunder Movement and that wondrous bone wing, you’ve chosen the wrong path to compete in speed with me,” Fei Tian said with a smile.

“What do you want?” Xiao Yan asked sternly, his eyes scanning the surroundings inconspicuously, searching for an escape route.

“Hand over the Three Thousand Illusion Body to the old chap. Even if you have all four scrolls, you still can’t cultivate it properly. Keeping it is a waste,” Fei Tian responded indifferently.

“If I give you the Three Thousand Illusion Body, you will let me go?” Xiao Yan squinted, speaking slowly.

Hearing this, Fei Tian smiled, and with a slight step forward, he appeared mysteriously about a hundred meters away from Xiao Yan. “Your technique to fuse foreign flames also interests me. Hand it over, and perhaps I’ll let you go.”

At these words, Xiao Yan’s expression turned completely grim. The Burning Decree was his greatest trump card; most of his accomplishments were due to it. That old man wanting to take the Burning Decree was tantamount to taking his life. And such a mystical technique, he would never hand over, especially not to an enemy like the Wind Lightning Pavilion.

“Old chap knows you have a powerful soul entity. I can vaguely sense his presence. But, a soul entity is just a soul. If he were a physical being, I would have to retreat, but alas.”

Seeing Xiao Yan’s gloomy face, Fei Tian paid no heed. His gaze slowly swept over Xiao Yan, pausing on the snow-white ring on his finger. “Hmph, big talk. If I were a physical being, would you dare show yourself before me?”

The snow-white ring trembled slightly, and the soul of the Heavenly Fire Venerable rose, looking at Fei Tian coldly.

Fei Tian’s expression shifted slightly, and his eyes scanned the Heavenly Fire Venerable. A person whose soul form alone could reach this level must have been a Dou Zun-level powerhouse in life. “A hero doesn’t recall his past glory. No ‘if’ in this world. Regardless of your past splendor, you’re now just a soul.”

In a gradually cold voice, he continued, “Xiao Yan, if you give me the Three Thousand Illusion Body and your cultivation method, I’ll let you leave. This soul entity can’t save you!”

“A mere eighth-star Battle Sect, daring to be so arrogant before me…” The Heavenly Fire Venerable snorted, turning to Xiao Yan and whispering, “You go first. I’ll hold him back.”

Startled, Xiao Yan nodded, though he disliked the old fiend, he knew the latter’s words were true. The Heavenly Fire Venerable, despite being a soul, was evenly matched with Fei Tian, and being a soul, he would be at a disadvantage. A fight would likely not be in his favor.

“Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing. I’ll just stall him. Don’t worry. I have a soul imprint on your ring. I’ll find a way to shake him off.”

Xiao Yan hesitated slightly, then nodded. Spreading his bone wings, he shot off in another direction. Seeing Xiao Yan attempt to flee, Fei Tian frowned. As he stepped forward, the space around him twisted. “It’s been so long since I fought. Let’s see what you can do!”

The Heavenly Fire Venerable’s semi-transparent figure materialized, and he clenched a fist, a sword made of soul power appearing.

“No matter how you delay, he won’t escape,” Fei Tian sneered, his body crackling with lightning. The clouds above darkened, and silver lightning began to flicker, resonating with the energy of the land.

With a grab, he formed a thunderous spear, and its body shook, causing massive fluctuations in the air. Seeing the Heavenly Fire Venerable’s prowess, Fei Tian grinned, his spear crackling as he thrust it forward.

Clang!

The clear sound echoed, and the weaker beasts below exploded under the strange wave.

The clash was horrifying.

Xiao Yan streaked like a meteor, sensing the changes behind him but not turning. The Heavenly Fire Venerable was buying time, and turning back would be folly.

“Old scoundrel, you remember today. I’ll repay you!” Xiao Yan gritted, face twisted. The burning desire to take the Burning Decree was infuriating.

Hatred surged, and Xiao Yan sped up, zipping through the mountains. After twenty minutes, the space warped, and the Heavenly Fire Venerable reappeared, looking serious. “Go! Space travel is a Dou Zun ability. If not for my experience, I couldn’t have pulled it off. But he’s fast and will catch up soon.”

Xiao Yan nodded, but paused. “Something’s off. I feel he can track me… something on me is guiding him.”

The Heavenly Fire Venerable nodded, puzzled. “I’m sure I don’t have any tracking marks, yet he knows… maybe something else…”

Xiao Yan called the four scrolls, scrutinized them, and then threw them in different directions. “Old scoundrel, see how you track me now!”
