Chapter 57: The Challenge

“A gentleman does not stand beneath a crumbling wall.” Mu Lin had firmly memorized this saying. He took out several talismans from his ring and set up a Heaven-and-Earth Mixed Array. As soon as the formation was complete, Mu Lin’s figure vanished from Hudson’s bedroom, and the space that had been confining him also disappeared within the formation.

Mu Lin was testing whether this formation could break through the spatial confinement created by psychic abilities. Based on his own strength, his spiritual power was far superior to his opponent’s. Although he had not yet mastered this particular application of psychic energy, he could still forcibly break through such a psychic spatial barrier, albeit at the cost of a certain amount of true spiritual energy.

His principle was always to keep a reserve in every situation. Striking back after being attacked didn’t necessarily mean being at a disadvantage; on the contrary, it allowed him to deeply understand the subtle aspects of spiritual energy during combat. His opponent’s fighting techniques and inner cultivation methods would be fully displayed during the struggle, offering him deeper insight than if he had simply searched for answers directly.

Now that he had a position to retreat to and defend himself, he felt confident enough to deal with those two people. Mu Lin reappeared in the room. Looking closer, his facial features, hairstyle, and skin tone had all changed—he now looked like a pure-blooded Caucasian. If he spoke, his accent would be a fluent New York dialect, making it impossible for anyone to associate him with Mu Lin.

This night’s raid was never meant to be traced back to him by the Hudson family. Doing so would provoke the Hudsons into a rage, turning their focus directly toward Boston and prompting a desperate attack on Boston’s three major families. Although Boston’s families would eventually win, it would draw the government’s attention or provoke other powerful forces in the country, making his own rear base insecure and inevitably exposing him to scrutiny from the government or other factions.

In this country where white supremacy prevails, if his connection with Boston’s three major families were ever exposed, it would trigger a massive uproar. Eventually, he would face attacks not only from the country’s military forces but also from all the dark powers within the nation. Would he be able to withstand such overwhelming power?

How would he protect his family and loved ones? These were all very difficult issues. Therefore, Mu Lin absolutely could not allow his appearance to be revealed.

Throughout this process, his spiritual awareness never ceased controlling the intruder who had been spying. For now, he did not want the spy to escape, as this could lead to unpredictable consequences for his operations in New York.

When the alarm signal came from Hudson’s room, the guards immediately surrounded the second basement level. Since alarms from Hudson’s room were unheard of, although these guards surrounded the basement, no one dared to enter.

Moreover, since the family’s founding, no one had ever managed to enter the patriarch’s room. Usually, intruders were captured in the courtyard, and even those with exceptional skills were captured inside the house. No one had ever made it to the second basement level unless there was a large-scale forced assault. Even then, Hudson would have ample time to escape through the basement’s emergency exit, rather than facing an alarm directly triggered from within his room, as was happening now.

Currently, the heavy door to the second basement remained intact, the guards were unharmed, and surveillance footage showed no strangers entering. No one could figure out what had happened inside Hudson’s room. People naturally feared the unknown. Thus, individuals with remote surveillance abilities and other psychics were urgently summoned to the basement.

Initially, the person with remote surveillance informed the guards that Hudson was safe and that there was only one intruder. After that, there was no further communication. As time passed and the psychic who had been observing Mu Lin remained silent and motionless like a statue, they realized something was wrong.

At this point, the psychic capable of spatial confinement began using his ability, attempting to confine the space around Mu Lin. Other psychics prepared to engage Mu Lin, while the remaining guards prepared to rescue Hudson.

Mu Lin’s spiritual awareness detected the explosive charges being installed on the door, while the other three psychics concentrated intensely, gathering their energy. He knew that a forced assault was imminent.

At this critical moment, Mu Lin had already formulated a plan. As the heavy door exploded open from C4 detonation, several tear gas grenades and flashbangs were thrown into the room. Mu Lin pretended to be overwhelmed by the tear gas, coughing loudly and shouting in confusion. He also feigned being blinded by the intense light, quickly retreating toward Hudson’s bed.

Outside, the attackers, using the bright light, saw a white man flailing about and shouting incoherently. They decided to capture the intruder alive. Three psychics rushed into the room first, followed by the remote observer and the others. Then, all of them, along with the intruder, suddenly vanished. Those who entered the room were stunned, unable to believe their eyes.

Thankfully, Hudson was unharmed, so they quickly evacuated him. The next day, a search was conducted, and the four individuals were found outside New York—but like Hudson, they had become mindless idiots. The Hudson family immediately fell into internal conflict, with various factions accusing each other of harming Hudson. Each faction then contacted their allied gangs in New York to fight for power, plunging the city’s underworld into chaos.

In reality, as soon as Mu Lin exposed his disguised appearance to the intruders, while retreating backward, he used the Five Ghost Transportation Technique to transport all four individuals into his formation. Inside the formation, no matter how violently the fight raged, those outside could not see anything. In the confusion, the attackers didn’t conduct a thorough search. When they realized the intruders had vanished, fearing further traps, they quickly evacuated Hudson. The room was now completely empty.

Inside Mu Lin’s formation, the three psychics had no idea what had happened. They believed they had successfully pursued Mu Lin. First, Mu Lin was subjected to spatial confinement. Then, one of them launched a lightning bolt toward him, while another unleashed a stream of flames from his palms.

Mu Lin had never fought against cultivators or psychics before. He had been careless, failing to fully channel his energy. Although he managed to break free from the spatial confinement and dodge the flames, he was unable to evade the lightning strike.

The bolt hit him directly, causing his hair to stand on end and his limbs to convulse uncontrollably. His clothes emitted a burnt odor, and he looked utterly disheveled.

“My heavens! How can this guy still use palm lightning? Wait, palm lightning shouldn’t look like this!” Mu Lin had never suffered such a defeat before, but now he had learned a painful lesson. His powerful physique allowed him to endure the shocks, and although his body convulsed violently, he remained mobile after a brief moment of standing still.

Seeing Mu Lin twitching and mumbling incoherently after being struck by lightning, the three attackers were both curious and irritated, yet also found the situation amusing. They were curious because no one had ever remained active after such a shock. They were irritated because Mu Lin showed no fear of them even after being struck. And they found it amusing because Mu Lin now looked like a complete clown.

They intensified their attacks, forcing Mu Lin to dodge even more frantically. After an hour and a half, although Mu Lin was still moving, his clothes were now in tatters, almost leaving him completely naked. Meanwhile, the three attackers were utterly exhausted, lying on the ground gasping for breath, their eyelids drooping, and unable to lift their hands anymore.
