Chapter 138: Confrontation (Part 11)

During the time Mu Lin was hosting the Mayor of New York City, he had already informed the mayor about the clinic’s successful treatment of the patient and provided all the medical test results. He also mentioned the news that the U.S. Home Medical Committee intended to conduct a separate medical examination of the patient.

After being brutally beaten by the patient, McCall and the other experts were deeply shaken and reluctant to examine the patient again. However, the idea of publicly releasing the video footage at a press conference was something they absolutely refused to accept.

McCall struggled to push aside the camera that had fallen on him, straightened his clothes, and gave up on fixing his messy hair for now. He said, “Mr. Mayor, don’t you think it’s an insult to us experts to release a video showing a Y-country patient attacking U.S. medical experts at a press conference? We absolutely cannot accept that!”

“Oh! Don’t you realize that there’s not much time left before the afternoon press conference? From what I know, a medical examination can’t produce accurate conclusions in less than two hours! You should know, it was precisely because of your negligence that such a critically ill patient was allowed into our country and our city.

Do you even realize the huge impact and damage this protest has caused to our country and our city? Right now, the entire world is watching this incident. This is no longer simply a medical treatment issue—it has become a matter that affects our country’s reputation.

Furthermore, as far as I know, the clinic has already conducted detailed tests and gathered sufficient data on the patient. So why can’t you experts just sign off on those results?”

The mayor firmly and decisively countered.

“Mr. Mayor, you should understand that Mulin Clinic is, after all, just a small private clinic. As experts from the U.S. Home Medical Committee, we cannot and should not casually sign off on their findings. We are supposed to represent the highest level of medical expertise in the United States. Determining whether a patient has fully recovered is a very serious and rigorous matter that shouldn’t be taken lightly,” McCall finally had time to fix his hair as he replied.

“So, Mr. McCall, what do you suggest we do now? Do you want to provoke a second nationwide protest? Do you think our country and our people should just accept your arbitrary decisions? Or do you believe that national security depends entirely on your so-called experts?” The mayor’s words were sharp and forceful, quickly suppressing McCall’s arrogance.

Mu Lin stood silently, watching the entire scene unfold. In this situation, he didn’t need to say much—his strong presence alone conveyed a powerful message.

Initially, when he invited these experts, he hadn’t suspected any problems. Even after the protest occurred and all the experts made excuses to avoid showing up, he still didn’t think much of it. In his mind, it was natural for people to avoid danger and seek safety. It wasn’t until the patient recovered and the experts suddenly insisted on conducting their own separate examination that he began to suspect their involvement in the incident.

It seemed that his original invitation had given these people an opportunity. But after the protest, they had all hidden away, never expecting that Mu Lin could cure the patient so quickly, which caught them completely off guard. Therefore, despite the risk of a direct confrontation, they insisted on conducting their own examination.

At that time, before any open conflict had occurred, Mu Lin couldn’t easily refuse them, or else they might have used that as an excuse to attack him. Now that the patient had performed such a dramatic scene, how could he not take advantage of it?

Therefore, he shared his views and plans regarding this incident with the mayor of New York City. After making some compromises, they staged this entire performance together.

Under the mayor’s pressure, McCall finally muttered, “Then can’t the clinic delay the press conference?”

The mayor didn’t respond. Instead, he walked directly to the television in the room, turned it on, and soon the screen was filled with news reports stating that Mulin Clinic would be holding a press conference in the afternoon. The reporters claimed the clinic would announce the patient’s full recovery and emphasized that this was confirmed information obtained directly from the clinic.

When McCall and the others saw these news reports, they realized that the situation had completely slipped out of their control—this development was beyond their expectations.

“Fine, then we’ll just sign the clinic’s medical report! We’ll admit that the clinic has completely cured the patient!” McCall and his group said gloomily.

Mu Lin exchanged a glance with the mayor of New York City, who immediately understood. The mayor approached McCall and the others and said, “I’m very sorry, gentlemen, but I have some bad news. Due to the wide-reaching impact of the protest, and at the request of our city government, Mr. Daniel has already agreed that this afternoon’s press conference will be jointly hosted by the city government and the clinic. In other words, this is no longer a press conference hosted by a private clinic. So I ask you, can such an official government-hosted press conference be rescheduled at will?

To put it bluntly, you gentlemen are directly connected to this protest. First of all, it was your approval that allowed this patient into the U.S. and into Mulin’s clinic. Furthermore, Mr. McCall, without fully investigating the clinic’s treatment methods, you released false information to the media, which led to this nationwide protest.

Therefore, gentlemen, I suspect that you have some kind of connection with the Y-country government or other organizations. Behind this patient incident, you may have had some kind of secret dealings with these groups. Thus, I question the authenticity and authority of your signatures. In this case, the video of the patient beating the experts is the best proof that the patient has fully recovered.

Moreover, you no longer represent the U.S. Home Medical Committee. Just now, I spoke with your chairman, and he had no knowledge of your actions. Perhaps you gentlemen can explain this clearly to the FBI.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention—agents from the FBI may already be on their way here. So I advise you not to leave the clinic premises arbitrarily.”

Then the mayor, together with Mu Lin and the patient, walked out of the room, leaving behind a group of experts with pale faces and stunned expressions.

Finally, it was time for the afternoon press conference.
