Chapter 169: Blockade (1)

Kerry came to country Y officially to supervise the operation of the Angel Fund and the construction of the Angel Orphanage. Moreover, she arrived discreetly without notifying several local branches. Accompanying Kerry was George Cross.

George Cross was born in 1930 in Budapest, Hungary. In 1947, he immigrated to the UK and graduated from the London School of Economics. In 1956, he moved to the United States. In 1979, George Soros established his first foundation in New York, the Open Society Fund. In 1984, he established the first Eastern European foundation in Hungary, followed by the Soviet Soros Foundation in 1987.

Since Mu Lin could not appear publicly in Y, Kerry brought Cross secretly to the villa where Mu Lin was currently renting. Mu Lin was already waiting at the front of the villa with Xiao Laipi. As soon as she saw Mu Lin, Kerry couldn’t contain her excitement, rushed towards him, tightly embraced his neck, and tears of joy involuntarily streamed down her cheeks.

Mu Lin hugged Kerry, patted her back gently, and softly whispered in her ear, “Sister, you’ve worked hard these days. But look, there’s a guest here with you; don’t let him laugh at us.”

Upon hearing this, Kerry immediately loosened her grip around Mu Lin’s neck. However, as her hands slid down to his waist, she pinched the soft flesh at his side fiercely, pouting as she said, “It’s all your fault, you little brat. You disappeared for months, making your sister lose face in front of others. I’ll settle this with you later!”

Since there were outsiders present, Mu Lin didn’t know what to say and just looked deeply at Kerry, his eyes conveying a message that made Kerry blush slightly.

Mu Lin quickly walked towards Cross, who was standing aside looking slightly embarrassed, stretched out his hands, and tightly grasped Cross’s hands, saying, “Mr. Cross, thank you for supporting me even when I was in trouble. I’m proud and honored to have a friend like you.”

Cross tightly held Mu Lin’s hands and said, “Mr. Daniel, please don’t talk like this. Without your excellent medical skills and noble medical ethics, I would still be a seriously ill patient, and even if I wanted to serve you, I would be willing but unable. You don’t know how painful I felt when I heard that my savior had gone missing. Thank God you’re finally safe and sound. Besides, you’ve also given Cross a plan to get rich, so what reason do I have not to go through fire and water for you?”

Both men’s faces simultaneously showed smiles, and in that moment, they understood each other’s intentions.

It turned out that Cross had once suffered from Ménière’s disease while in country U. Ménière’s disease, also known as endolymphatic hydrops, is an inner ear disorder caused by swelling of the inner ear membrane labyrinth, characterized by episodes of vertigo, fluctuating hearing loss, and tinnitus. It usually affects one ear and is commonly seen in young and middle-aged adults. The exact cause is unknown but may be related to congenital inner ear abnormalities, autonomic nervous system dysfunction, viral infections, allergies, endocrine disorders, and salt and water metabolism imbalances. Currently, it is generally believed that the main cause is obstruction or absorption problems of the endolymphatic flow. The main clinical manifestations are episodic vertigo, fluctuating hearing loss, and tinnitus. It is considered an unsolved medical problem.

When Mu Lin once met Cross at an academic conference, he saw Cross having an acute attack—sudden rotational vertigo. Cross felt that everything around him was spinning in a certain direction and plane or swaying left and right. He himself was vomiting and swaying. Mu Lin had him close his eyes, which alleviated the symptoms. Finally, Cross sat quietly in fear, not daring to move because every time he stood up, he felt like he would fall to the ground, although his consciousness was clear. People around saw Cross nauseous, vomiting, pale-faced, sweating coldly, and with a drop in blood pressure. Finally, Mu Lin used acupuncture, inserting a needle into the Shenque acupoint, and after a few minutes, Cross’s symptoms naturally eased. Eventually, Mu Lin, appreciating his talent in finance, invited him to his clinic for treatment. When Mu Lin learned that Cross was not financially well-off, he waived the treatment fees, completely curing Cross’s condition.

At that time, in New York’s circle of the wealthy, due to his limited capital, strength, and connections, Cross was nowhere near the top among the numerous rich people in New York. Therefore, the wealthy New Yorkers never considered Cross for the monthly four treatment slots at the clinic.

Cross was aware of his status. Although he had heard that Mu Lin’s clinic could cure many diseases, he knew he couldn’t meet Mu Lin and never dared to dream of receiving treatment there.

At that financial academic conference, the two sat together and found they shared many common topics, developing mutual admiration. When Mu Lin took out his golden needle, Cross realized he had met his benefactor.

After being invited as a special guest to Mu Lin’s clinic, New York’s wealthy finally accepted Cross because of Mu Lin’s reputation. Gradually, Cross met many tycoons and businessmen. As his capital gradually accumulated, his financial talent began to gain recognition among New York’s elite.

It could be said that without Mu Lin, there would be no George Cross today. When he heard that Mu Lin had gone missing in country Y, he was extremely anxious, going to the clinic every day to inquire about Mu Lin’s condition from the staff.

When he later learned from the media that it was the Y government’s doing, he sent a strongly worded letter to the Y government, demanding that they ensure Mu Lin’s safety or he would be their enemy for life. Therefore, as soon as he received the invitation from Kerry on behalf of Mu Lin and learned that Mu Lin was safe, he was overjoyed, immediately dropped his current work, and set off to London to meet Mu Lin.

“Cross, let’s not be so formal with each other, okay? If we keep being this polite, it won’t be beneficial for our future work. Now, let’s go into the living room first and let me tell you my plan. If you think my plan is feasible, we can carefully discuss each step of this operation and show the Y government a little of our colors, okay?”
