Chapter 185: Lying Low (Part 7)

While everyone was waiting for the doctor to arrive, the mayor and his assistant looked at Mu Lin and the mayor said, “Young man, I think there’s something we need to reach an agreement on—your name. If you’re going to stay in this town, we need to give you a temporary name since you don’t remember your own. What name do you think would suit you?”

Before Mu Lin could respond, Jack jumped up excitedly. “I think we should call him ‘Sean’! Ever since he was unconscious, I’ve been wanting to call him Sean.”

Seeing everyone nodding in agreement, Mu Lin thought to himself, “Alright then, from now on I guess I’m Sean.” Aloud, he said, “Thank you all! Until I regain my memory, I’ll go by Sean.”

Just then, the doctor returned with Officer Louis, surprised to find everyone still in the room. “Oh! You’re all still here. Well then, I’ll just discuss things with everyone together. I’ve already explained the situation to Officer Louis, and he wanted to come personally to see the patient and verify his condition, so we can decide what to do next.”

Louis looked at Mu Lin and softened his tone, “Young man, I heard you can speak several languages. Is that true?”

Mu Lin paused thoughtfully before replying, “Yes sir, I seem to be familiar with several languages. Oh, and sir, I now have a name—please call me Sean!”

“Oh! Sean! Do you remember your name then?” Louis asked, puzzled.

“No, Officer Louis, it’s like this,” the mayor quickly explained. “Sean can’t remember his real name, so we gave him this temporary one.”

“May I ask what your name is?” Louis suddenly switched to German.

“Officer Louis, didn’t I just tell you? Please call me Sean!” Mu Lin replied fluently in German.

This time, Louis was truly taken aback. He had only intended to test Mu Lin with a common phrase used by police officers, but he hadn’t expected Mu Lin to respond so fluently that he couldn’t understand a word.

“Alright then, Sean,” the elderly doctor stepped in to help Louis recover from his embarrassment. “Louis doesn’t seem to have any further questions. But you still have many things to figure out. Let me ask you, do you now have any idea what else you can do?”

Mu Lin considered carefully before answering seriously, “To be honest, I’m not sure what I can do yet. But I’ve noticed that I seem quite familiar with hospitals and even medical procedures.”

Upon hearing this, the elderly doctor’s mouth dropped open. He thought to himself, “Impossible! How could such a young man already master medical skills, yet not remember his own identity?”

Everyone watched the exchange between the two and saw their expressions, unable to help but smile. Who would have thought that the one who came to help another recover from embarrassment would end up in the same situation? No one could help but wonder what other surprises Sean might bring.

Seeing the doctor’s expression, the mayor stepped forward. “Sean, even if you do have some medical skills, you can’t stay in the hospital because you don’t have a medical license. You know that practicing medicine without a license here is against the law.”

Hearing the mayor’s words, Mu Lin maintained a serious expression as he replied, “Mayor, the doctor asked me what other skills I might have. You know, I can’t remember specific things right now, so I can only rely on my instinctive memories triggered by the environment.”

Mu Lin’s intention was to blend in with this quiet town. He wanted to focus on cultivating his martial arts skills and crafting talismans, living by his own abilities so as not to raise suspicion among the townspeople or have to explain other extraordinary skills he might possess.

Hearing Mu Lin’s explanation, everyone was reminded that he was still a patient who had lost his memory—what more could they possibly expect from him? Everyone exchanged slightly embarrassed expressions.

“Alright, everyone, stop staring at Sean,” Officer Louis broke the silence. “Let’s discuss how Sean should live from now on.”

“Great! Sean can come live with me. My parents would love to have him!” Jack spoke up eagerly.

“Thank you, Jack,” Mu Lin replied, continuing the conversation. “I would be delighted to visit your home, but not right now. Gentlemen, I am a healthy young man, and I hope I can support myself and live here independently, rather than relying on others’ help, because I am a man. So I would like to make one request: please give me a job where I can earn money and a place to live. Don’t worry, I will pay rent. I hope to recover my lost memories here.”

Everyone looked at Mu Lin with admiration. After a moment of thought, the mayor said, “My boy, I truly admire you. You are indeed a real man. However, you must understand that our town has been gradually declining as the young people have left. Therefore, there aren’t many job opportunities available. At the moment, there are only two positions left unfilled: one is the night watchman at the hospital, and the other is the lighthouse keeper on the left side of the town.”

“What’s the difference?” Mu Lin asked.

“There’s not much difference. The hospital night watchman job requires you to rent a room in town since the hospital doesn’t have spare rooms for night staff. The lighthouse keeper job is farther from town and more remote, but it includes accommodation. The salary for both jobs is the same.”

“Alright then. I’ll choose to be the lighthouse keeper,” Mu Lin replied thoughtfully and solemnly, his face showing gratitude. After all, this was his first job, offered by the kindness of these people during his time of need.
