Chapter 14: The Mysterious Master

Xiao Yufan reorganized his resume and sent it to the public email addresses of several well-known software and programming design companies in Beijing. Previously, he had sent out his resume on a trial basis but received no response at all. However, this time, he believed that his carefully crafted resume would surely capture the attention of these companies.

“Yufan, had too much to drink, didn’t you? Can’t remember much from last night, right? How are you feeling now…” On the phone, Mateng’s voice carried a very lewd tone. Xiao Yufan rubbed his still slightly aching temple and couldn’t help but smile.

“I’m okay, I guess. Yeah, last night was a total blackout! Aren’t you supposed to be at work now? How come you have time to call me?”

“I got special approval to take the day off today, so I can enjoy a good rest. But tell me, how did the resume thing go?” Mateng’s voice carried a hint of smugness; getting a day off was indeed a rare luxury working at such a big company.

“Not too bad. I made a new version of my resume. Hopefully, some companies will notice me.” Xiao Yufan felt particularly uncertain. He didn’t know whether these so-called big companies would even consider him, but he still had to give it a try.

On the other end of the line, Mateng paused for a moment, clearly taken aback. In the past three years, Xiao Yufan had never really shown dedication toward anything, except for a few days of depression after breaking up with his beloved. He hadn’t invested effort in anything else.

“If no company hires you, I can help you out. Our company is currently hiring, so you could come work here!” Mateng suggested, but Xiao Yufan didn’t take it seriously. Mateng was at best a minor manager in the company, and probably couldn’t protect him. Besides, Xiao Yufan wanted to make his own way, as there was still a long road ahead.

“I still prefer programming, of course. But if those companies really don’t give me a chance, I might consider working at your place!” Xiao Yufan said casually while fiddling with his second-hand computer.

“As long as you’re happy, that’s fine. Once you actually start working, I’ll treat you to celebrate your ‘first meal’!” Mateng teased. His suggestion wasn’t a sudden whim or because he had the authority to protect Xiao Yufan, but because Huyingluo had that kind of power. It was obvious that their relationship had developed quite well after only one day together.

After hanging up the phone, Xiao Yufan wore a faint bitter smile. He had drifted aimlessly for three years, and starting over now was indeed very difficult. Fortunately, he hadn’t completely fallen apart and still had some basic skills.

“You little rascal! Haven’t contacted this old man for such a long time—did you forget about me?” A message window popped up on his phone. Seeing the familiar number, all of Xiao Yufan’s negative emotions gradually dissipated.

“How could I forget you, Master? I’ve just been busy looking for jobs every day. Making a living in Beijing isn’t easy!”

“Cut the crap! Don’t think I don’t know what you’ve been up to these past three years. All you’ve done is chase girls, right?”

Xiao Yufan’s face reddened involuntarily. It seemed like nothing could escape his Master’s eyes. Since he could remember, he had known his Master, who supposedly taught his grandfather everything about feng shui and fortune-telling. In Xiao Yufan’s eyes, this old man, who always seemed like a child, had a very mysterious identity.

“I told you before, whenever you’re short on money, just let me know. Yet you always hesitate, as if you’re too proud to ask me for help?” Though Xiao Yufan couldn’t detect any emotion from the text, he could sense a subtle hint of anger in the words.

“I can’t keep taking money from you forever, Master. Back when I was in college, I already asked you for a lot of money just for dating!” Xiao Yufan shook his head. Even though he didn’t fully understand his Master’s background, he realized that money was probably just a mere symbol to him.

“I know you’re proud, but remember this: wherever you go, without money, you can’t hold your head high. I’ve already arranged a card for you. It should arrive soon!” Feeling the firmness in his Master’s tone, Xiao Yufan didn’t refuse.

“So, Master, what wisdom do you have for me this time? You suddenly remembering me must mean there’s something else, right?” Talking to his Master made Xiao Yufan feel unusually calm, even more so than when he was with his own parents.

“Did you recently do feng shui readings for someone, and specifically for a cemetery?” When he read this message, Xiao Yufan’s heart skipped a beat. His Master was an expert in feng shui. Back then, it was his Master who told him not to touch feng shui before turning 25. Could it be that helping someone with feng shui had some serious implications? But only a few people knew about his helping Huyingluo. Could his Master have calculated this?

“I did help a friend with a feng shui reading yesterday, but since my 25th birthday is just around the corner, I guess it won’t be a big issue!” Xiao Yufan asked hesitantly.

“Thankfully, your birthday is only a few days away. If it had been a few days earlier, the consequences could have been much worse! Be extra cautious these few days and make sure nothing happens to you!”

“Why can’t I do feng shui readings before turning 25? I don’t feel like it’s had any major impact on me!”

“Your birth date leans toward pure yin, while feng shui is more closely related to yang energy. The two clash. There’s more to it, but I can’t explain it all right now. Just be careful these next few days—I don’t want you to face any mishaps!”

“I understand. I’ll definitely be careful!” Xiao Yufan didn’t fully grasp the intricacies, but he had to believe his Master. After all, feng shui was one of those things that existed only if you believed in them…
