Chapter 17: Everything Goes Wrong

Three thousand yuan was a considerable sum for Xiao Yufan, and the worst part was that he had just deposited ten thousand yuan into his savings. Where was he supposed to find three thousand now?

“No money, no way forward…” Xiao Yufan thought about who he could possibly borrow three thousand yuan from. He couldn’t really afford to stay locked up in the station for a few days. If he ended up with a criminal record, it would only make finding a job even harder in the future.

As he pondered, Xiao Yufan suddenly thought of Yu Yihan. He wasn’t sure why she came to mind all of a sudden, but aside from her, he really didn’t want anyone else to see him in such a desperate situation.

“Hey, are you free right now?” He nervously dialed Yu Yihan’s number, unsure how to explain. Should he just come out and say he had been arrested for fighting and needed her to bail him out? After all, she wasn’t family or even particularly close—they had no such ties. Why would she care?

“What?” Her voice was cool and detached. At least she hadn’t hung up immediately. Ever since Xiao Yufan’s father had visited last time, their relationship had somewhat improved, no longer as tense as before.

“Um…” Xiao Yufan frowned, then forced himself to continue. “I got into a little argument at a nightclub and ended up being brought to the police station. I need to pay a three-thousand-yuan fine to get out, but I don’t have the cash on me. Could you lend me the money? I really don’t want to stay here for two days.”

“So what? What do I care about your problems? You went to a place like that on your own, so you deserve to be taken in!” The line went dead with a couple of beeps. Xiao Yufan was just about to curse when Yu Yihan called back.

“Tell me where you are. And don’t get the wrong idea—I’m not doing this out of pity. I just don’t want someone with a criminal record living in my apartment!”

Yu Yihan’s actions always confused Xiao Yufan, but he didn’t bother trying to figure her out. As long as she was willing to help, that was enough for now. He didn’t expect to get another chance like this again, even if it did sound a bit harsh—he could live with it.

After giving her his location, Xiao Yufan shot another glance at the unattractive female officer and sighed. He really needed to stop watching those Hong Kong and Macau crime dramas—after all, not every female cop was a beauty.

It took nearly three hours before Yu Yihan finally showed up. Xiao Yufan even suspected she had intentionally delayed just to get back at him. But the fact that she had made time for him at all, during work hours no less, was already going above and beyond.

“Thanks!” Xiao Yufan felt that at least a word of gratitude was necessary, but Yu Yihan showed no sign of accepting it. After finishing all the procedures, she got straight into her luxurious Mercedes-Benz SLK.

“Get in. I need to talk to you.” She rolled down the window and said to Xiao Yufan, who was standing there awkwardly.

He hesitated for a moment, surprised, but then climbed into the passenger seat. He wondered what she wanted to say. By now, he had already owed her two favors.

“If you still want to keep living in my apartment, stay away from places like nightclubs. And I hope today’s incident won’t happen again!” Yu Yihan’s tone was cold, but Xiao Yufan knew this was just one side of her.

From the moment she had taken him in, to now paying his fine, it was clear that her heart wasn’t as icy as she made it seem.

Hearing her almost commanding tone, Xiao Yufan felt a bit resentful, but he held it in. On one hand, she had just helped him; on the other, he could tell she was genuinely concerned. Nightclubs were no place to frequent anyway.

“You can get out now. If you ever go back to such places again, I think it’s time for you to move out. Our arrangement will be over then.” Seeing Xiao Yufan nod, Yu Yihan glanced at her watch and issued her dismissal.

“I…” Xiao Yufan wanted to say something else, but obediently got out of the car. He didn’t expect her to drive him all the way home—just not being left stranded was already a relief. At the same time, he silently resolved to find a decent job soon. Otherwise, Yu Yihan would never respect him. He was a man, after all, and couldn’t keep relying on a woman for help.

In Xiao Yufan’s eyes, Yu Yihan wasn’t entirely heartless, but for now, he found it hard to feel any romantic interest in a woman like her. Although she was undeniably beautiful, there seemed to be no possibility of any real connection between them.

Feeling somewhat down, Xiao Yufan returned to his rented apartment. He had no mood to go back to the nightclub anymore. Today had definitely been his unluckiest day. He had only gone out to relax, but ended up dragged into the police station—truly a ridiculous situation.

“Bro, sorry about today. I was dealing with the troublemakers and didn’t get a chance to help you out. Where are you now? Let me treat you to dinner as an apology!”

Xiao Yufan looked at his phone. It was a message from Fan Le. It seemed like the guy had sorted out the nightclub mess. He had to admit, Fan Le must have some powerful connections to be able to run a club like that. But this apology felt a bit too serious—after all, when a brother was in trouble, helping out was only natural. He just hadn’t expected to be caught in the crossfire of those troublemakers.

“Never mind about dinner. Finish your own stuff first. Don’t worry, I’m not that petty!” Xiao Yufan had no intention of going out again. Who knew what other bad luck might come his way.
