Chapter 26: The Emergence of Reluctance

Xiao Yufan didn’t tell Yu Yihan about the interview. Partly because he feared it would create unnecessary embarrassment if he failed, and partly because he wasn’t ready to leave the rented apartment just yet.

He spent the night sleepless, wondering when exactly his life path had quietly shifted. Had it been after meeting Cheng Ying in Shanghai? Or was it because of Yu Yihan’s appearance?

The next morning, while it was still slightly dark outside, Xiao Yufan had already gotten out of bed. Clearly, he was taking this interview quite seriously.

However, what surprised Xiao Yufan a bit was that Yu Yihan was already gone when he woke up. It seemed he’d never seen the latter leave for work this early before, though he didn’t dwell on it too much.

For once, Xiao Yufan tidied up his messy bedroom. That atmosphere of decadence even made him feel slightly disgusted. Perhaps from today on, he would finally say “goodbye” to the hazy, aimless version of himself from the past three years.

He took out a suit he considered particularly handsome and couldn’t help but smile at his reflection in the mirror. After everything with Cheng Ying, he had learned a lot—nobody will care about you unless you first live well enough to make others care.

He was already very familiar with the company’s location, so it didn’t take him much effort to arrive at the foot of the programming company’s building. Yet what lay before him gave his confidence a serious blow.

It was a large-scale recruitment scene. Many people stood quietly outside, holding various briefcases. Occasionally, one or two people would walk out of the building, their faces filled with dejection.

“Brother, are you here for the interview too?” Just as Xiao Yufan was considering giving up, a voice came from behind him. Then, a hand landed on his shoulder.

Turning around, Xiao Yufan finally saw the man’s face clearly. To be honest, seeing this person made him reluctant to say anything, but since the other had taken the initiative to greet him, it would be impolite not to respond.

“Yeah, just here to try my luck…”

Staring at the man in front of him, Xiao Yufan suddenly felt they might be kindred spirits. While others carried large and small bags, this person didn’t even bring a resume.

“Everyone here must have some real skills. Don’t be so humble. This company is among the top in all of Beijing—many people would do anything to get in. Those invited for interviews must have already gained the company’s initial approval!”

“It does sound like a pretty good company. The interview must be even more rigorous, right? You didn’t even bring a resume—are you overly confident or are you actually a master-level talent?” Xiao Yufan raised the resume in his hand and teased.

The man grinned rather sleazily, then, after checking that no one was eavesdropping, whispered into Xiao Yufan’s ear, “Actually, I’m not really here for the company. I just heard the CEO is a real beauty… So… you know what I mean…”

Hearing those words, Xiao Yufan felt a chill run down his spine. Truly, you can’t judge a book by its cover—he never expected this seemingly refined guy to be so lewd.

“Who’s Lin Pingle? Please come in…”

A voice came from inside. The man immediately pushed his way through the crowd and, casting Xiao Yufan a “you-know-what-I-mean” look, strolled into the building with a very relaxed gait, completely free of the nervousness everyone else seemed to have.

“The more casual someone appears, the more extraordinary abilities they might possess…” Xiao Yufan recalled his master’s words, which he had heard many times before, and found himself growing more curious about this person named Lin Pingle.

Compared to many of the other applicants, what Xiao Yufan held in his hands looked quite meager. Fortunately, meeting Lin Pingle had somewhat balanced his mindset.

Waiting always felt long, and Lin Pingle had clearly spent more time inside than the previous interviewees, which suggested he really had some talent.

After a long while, Lin Pingle finally walked out. His face showed no sign of dejection, only a hint of joy—clearly, he had passed the interview.

“Looks like you really are a master-level talent. Congratulations…”

“It was too easy for me… But the CEO is really beautiful. Working under such a beauty is definitely motivating. As the saying goes, ‘To die under the peony is to die a happy death.'”

Xiao Yufan was momentarily speechless. He had originally wanted to ask about the interview content, but decided against it—interviews vary from person to person, so asking him wouldn’t be particularly helpful.

After Lin Pingle came out, many other people went in and out, and finally, it was Xiao Yufan’s turn. His heart began to race with excitement…

When his name was finally called, Lin Pingle also turned his gaze toward him again, giving Xiao Yufan an encouraging smile. Though, admittedly, the smile looked somewhat lewd, it still managed to comfort Xiao Yufan.
