Chapter 440: Ghost King (2)

“Soul-Snatching Ghost Howl!”

Almost without needing to think, Fairy Violet Spirit’s mind conjured the name of this chilling ghost technique that sent a cold shiver down her spine.

This spell was an innate ability of high-level specters and evil spirits. When used in combat, it could cause opponents with significantly lower cultivation to have their blood flow backward uncontrollably, forcing them into a frenzied dance against their will. It was an extremely sinister and vicious ghost art!

She had carelessly mistaken the initial sounds for ordinary ghost wails, and now she deeply regretted her lapse in judgment. As she felt herself being compelled to step forward uncontrollably, dancing wildly to the ghostly weeping, Fairy Violet Spirit was utterly terrified.

Just then, a man’s sharp “Hah!” sounded in her ears. Though not loud, it struck her soul like a clap of thunder, causing her legs to give way and collapse to the ground.

To her surprise and relief, she found that she had regained control of her body. Grateful, she glanced toward the source of the sound.

She recognized it clearly—it was Han Li’s voice.

“Fairy Violet! With your cultivation level, as long as you guard your mind, this ghost sound shouldn’t be able to take advantage of you. You were just careless,” Han Li’s calm voice echoed in her ears once more.

Blushing slightly, Fairy Violet let out a soft “Mm” of acknowledgment before sheepishly rising to her feet. She steadied her mind and walked toward Han Li.

When she reached his back, she was surprised to find Han Li standing motionless, his gaze fixed intently ahead. Following his line of sight, she tensed at the scene before her.

In the ghostly mist not far away, black fog churned violently, occasionally emitting alternating green and red glows. The low rumble of thunder and the ghostly sound that had just humiliated her intertwined intermittently.

The black-robed demonic cultivator was commanding a fiery-red strange hammer that spewed countless blue flames, locked in combat with a blurry black ghostly figure. Shrouded in mist, the ghostly figure summoned a thumb-sized green pearl that released dark, profound Yin cold energy, trapping the black-robed man and gaining the upper hand.

Meanwhile, the Soul-Sucking Beast, rumored to “devour souls and prey on ghosts,” was being harassed from a distance by two humanoid ghosts covered in green fur.

Apart from their pointed heads and the fact that each held a several-foot-long white bone fork in their hands, these monsters were identical to ordinary green-furred zombies. They relentlessly attacked the Soul-Sucking Beast by spewing green ghost fire from their bone forks.

In response, the Soul-Sucking Beast shot yellow radiant light from its nostrils. No matter how fierce the ghost fire was, the light would envelop it and draw it entirely into the beast’s belly.

At first glance, the Soul-Sucking Beast seemed to have the upper hand. The two green-furred monsters dared not approach within ten feet of it, clearly wary of the yellow light. However, this also meant the beast was effectively pinned down, unable to aid the black-robed man.

“Ghost Night Fiends!” Fairy Violet gasped in recognition at the sight of the two green-furred monsters.

“Oh? Does Fairy Violet recognize these creatures?” Han Li asked without turning his head, though his interest was piqued.

“I believe so. Though I’ve never seen them before, they match the descriptions in ancient texts perfectly. They are an extremely rare type of zombie, one of the few ghost creatures capable of moving freely under sunlight and roaming the world. No wonder they aren’t afraid of the Soul-Sucking Beast’s pressure and dare to approach it. Since they possess physical bodies, as long as they avoid being directly hit by the beast’s soul-sucking light, they should be able to keep it occupied. After all, this Soul-Sucking Beast seems to be relatively young and inexperienced, aside from its soul-sucking light, it hasn’t mastered any other abilities.” Fairy Violet stepped forward, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Han Li, and explained with an orchid-like grace in her breath.

Han Li’s expression remained unchanged, but he sighed inwardly. Though her cultivation wasn’t high, her knowledge far surpassed that of a loose cultivator like him. Although he had read many texts back in the Yellow Maple Valley, his cultivation was too low at the time to access truly valuable and secret materials.

Later, after arriving in the Scattered Star Seas, he purchased many ancient texts, but these were not systematically organized by a sect. As a result, they often contained repetitions or omissions. This shortcoming wasn’t usually apparent, but in critical moments like this, his lack of knowledge became evident. If they managed to escape safely this time, he resolved to visit the Mysterious Yin Sect to study their collection of texts. Surely, they wouldn’t refuse a nominal elder like him!

As Han Li pondered this, the situation on the battlefield changed again.

The blue flames of the fiery-red flying hammer were completely overwhelmed by the black Yin energy released from the ghostly figure’s green pearl. The flames flickered on the verge of extinction, putting the black-robed man in grave danger. He was both shocked and furious!

He had made thorough preparations for this treasure hunt, believing that with the Soul-Sucking Beast’s power, passing through the first level, the Ghost Grudge Land, would be effortless. That was why he had outright refused Han Li’s invitation. He never expected to encounter such a powerful evil spirit, one that knew how to divide and conquer. Taking advantage of his momentary carelessness, it had separated him from the Soul-Sucking Beast, trapping him in this perilous situation.

Unfortunately, disciples of his sect excelled at refining the Soul-Sucking Beast and knew some unique heterodox techniques, but they lacked formidable combat abilities. He could only watch helplessly as his mind-linked demonic fire hammer dimmed and its power waned.

The thought of perishing here filled the black-robed man with icy dread and panic.

Just then, Han Li arrived nearby. Spotting him, the black-robed man felt as if he had grasped a lifeline, elated. However, Han Li’s subsequent actions infuriated the prideful man to the point of nearly vomiting blood.

Despite seeing him in such dire straits, Han Li showed no intention of helping. Instead, he coldly observed the battle between the black-robed man and the evil spirit from a distance. The black-robed man gritted his teeth in resentment toward Han Li.

Shortly after, Fairy Violet also arrived. Seeing the black-robed man struggling desperately, she was puzzled why Han Li hadn’t intervened. Was he deliberately letting the black-robed man die because of his earlier hostile attitude?

She didn’t think Han Li was that shortsighted, which only deepened her confusion.

Due to Han Li’s recent life-saving favor, she couldn’t voice her doubts outright. Instead, she watched the battle between the black-robed man and the ghostly figure with a complex gaze, remaining silent.

But now, the black-robed man could hold on no longer. His flying hammer, enveloped by the Yin energy from the green pearl, lost all its demonic flames and was completely trapped mid-air. At that moment, the black ghostly figure let out a sharp screech and transformed into a black streak of light, shooting straight toward the black-robed man’s chest.

Though his expression was hidden by his attire, the black-robed man stood motionless, seemingly resigned to his fate with a pallid face, eyes closed in despair.

He knew very well that although he had other protective spells active, they were like paper against such a fierce ghost. Without a magic treasure to block the attack, the ghost’s claw would shatter all his barriers in an instant, killing him on the spot. With his flying hammer trapped and no other treasures to summon, he could only await death.

At this critical moment, Han Li, who had been watching coldly from the sidelines, acted without warning.

He raised his hand, and four or five slender green sword Qi shot out, vanishing almost instantly as they targeted the shadow’s vital spots.

If the shadow ignored them and continued its attack on the black-robed man, it might kill him, but its own core would likely be shredded by the sword Qi.

Of course, the shadow was unwilling to make such a losing trade. It swayed a few times and retreated to its original position as if it had never moved. Then, its eyes shot out green beams, fixed emotionlessly on Han Li.

Seeing this, a strange light flickered in Han Li’s eyes. He flipped his palm, and a small spirit beast pouch appeared in his hand.

But instead of immediately deploying it, he swiftly flicked the fingers of his other hand, sending over a dozen identical green beams shooting toward the two green-furred Night Fiends.

The two ghost creatures were quite clever. Seeing Han Li’s sneak attack, they swayed and transformed into two plumes of green smoke, vanishing without a trace. Moments later, they reappeared on either side of the black ghostly figure, baring their fierce black and yellow fangs at Han Li.

Seizing the moment when the ghostly figure turned its attention to Han Li, the black-robed man mustered all his remaining magic power in a desperate gamble and miraculously managed to recall his flying hammer. Overjoyed, he transformed into a red streak of light and shot toward Han Li’s position.

But at that moment, Han Li’s expression turned cold as he shouted, “Be careful! There are other ghosts!”

Hearing this, the black-robed man was stunned! But it was too late—a faint, almost invisible gray humanoid figure shot out from the mist on another side, flashing toward him in an instant.

The black-robed man had no time to dodge, his exposed eyes filled with terror!
