Chapter 71: A Girlfriend Who Seems to Exist

Yan Wei also heard the hurried footsteps. Panicked, she instinctively grabbed Xia Yu’s arm.

It was a normal reaction when facing danger, but also a foolish one.

Instead of resisting, she ended up hindering her companion.

This was a typical reaction of drowning people, and many rescuers had died in the water because of this.

Fortunately, Yan Wei was somewhat alert. After Xia Yu nudged her fingers slightly, she immediately let go.

At this moment, the footsteps had arrived beside them.

Yan Wei nervously used her phone’s flashlight to scan the surroundings, but the illumination range was limited, so she couldn’t spot the approaching figure for now.

However, Xia Yu could see. He had night vision skills obtained from the black cat, although only at level 1, allowing him to see just an outline.

The figure approached them, raised the wooden stick in hand, and swung it down toward Xia Yu and Yan Wei.

Xia Yu pushed Yan Wei aside to dodge the stick and then kicked the figure.

The figure fell to the ground, rolled a few times, entered a patch of shadow, and disappeared.

“Turn off the phone light,” Xia Yu said to Yan Wei.

In the darkness, light was a target. As long as the light was off and no sound was made, no one could see each other.

Yan Wei hurriedly tried to turn off the flashlight on her phone but couldn’t find the button for a moment.

The surroundings were too dark, and with the figure deliberately hiding, Xia Yu couldn’t spot the opponent’s position either.

After a brief panic, Yan Wei finally turned off the phone light. Before she could even catch her breath, a figure approached right in front of her.

Now that they were close, Yan Wei could distinguish the presence of someone from the deepened darkness. She put her arms in front and let out a scream.

A dull sound of a stick striking was heard, but Yan Wei didn’t feel any pain.

Xia Yu had blocked the stick with his arm. He punched the attacker in the abdomen and reached out to grab the attacker’s hand, attempting to use basic martial arts techniques to subdue the opponent.

However, his arm had just been hit by the stick and was somewhat weakened, so he couldn’t grab the opponent tightly.

The figure stepped back a few steps, let out a painful groan, and then fled.

Without pursuing, Xia Yu picked up the phone, turned on the flashlight, and first pulled Yan Wei into the lighted area.

The girl was badly frightened and still in shock.

Xia Yu then dialed the police. Three minutes later, the police arrived.

After explaining what had happened and giving a statement at the station, Xia Yu and Yan Wei left the police station together.

An old police officer offered to take them home.

“You reported the incident immediately after being attacked, which is very good. However, there are no surveillance cameras around, and you didn’t get a clear view of the attacker, so it will be difficult to identify the assailant,” the old officer said bluntly.

Xia Yu had long known that this case would be difficult to investigate. He came to report the incident not to find the perpetrator, but to clear himself of any potential blame.

With his previous fighting experience, he knew exactly how hard his kicks and punches were. After being kicked once and punched once, the attacker must have been in a terrible state. If the punches had landed in the right spots, there might even be internal injuries.

By calling the police, it would be considered legitimate self-defense, especially since the attacker used a stick throughout, while Xia Yu used only his fists and feet.

On the way, Xia Yu was also thinking about who had come to attack him. The attacker’s first strike was aimed at both him and Yan Wei, but the second strike was completely directed at Yan Wei.

Was it the boy from the neighboring class who had been pranked at the milk tea shop and was punished earlier?

No, the attacker was much taller than that boy.

Before he could figure out the answer, Yan Wei had already reached her apartment building.

“Where do you live?” the old officer asked Xia Yu again.

Xia Yu shook his head: “No need, I can go back by myself.”

The old officer narrowed his eyes, glanced at the two, and smiled:

“Mm, after being attacked, your hormone levels are up. It’s normal to comfort each other.”

Waving goodbye to the two, the old officer left.

Xia Yu didn’t bother to explain. The reason he sent the police away was not only because of his confidence in his abilities, but also because he didn’t want the neighbors to find out.

Turning around, he was about to leave when Yan Wei grabbed his sleeve.

After the attack, the girl had remained silent all along.

“Don’t be afraid. As long as you don’t walk through secluded areas, you’ll be fine,” Xia Yu thought Yan Wei was still scared.

The girl didn’t respond. She used her other hand to grab Xia Yu’s arm and then lowered her head, starting to cry.

Xia Yu used his other hand to ruffle her head with a sigh.

He couldn’t even remember when was the last time he saw a girl crying.

So, why was Yan Wei crying in front of him?

He didn’t respond and silently watched her.

Under Xia Yu’s silence, Yan Wei’s crying gradually stopped.

“Alright, go home,” Xia Yu said.

But Yan Wei still didn’t let go of his hand.

“Does your arm hurt?” the girl rolled up Xia Yu’s sleeve.

There was a bruise on Xia Yu’s forearm.

“Just a minor injury. I blocked where the guy was holding the stick.”

The tip of a swung stick carried the most force, while the middle and the end had much less.

After saying that, Xia Yu pulled hard and freed his arm from Yan Wei’s grip.

He had no interest in moving toward the next step of the “hero rescuing the beauty.”

Yan Wei grabbed his hand again.

“Why are you avoiding me?” Yan Wei looked into Xia Yu’s eyes.

Don’t you know the reason yourself? I see you as a chef, but what about you?

The previously cheerful girl, why had she become like this?

It was because recently, Yan Wei had developed a false sense of a possible relationship, so she couldn’t easily accept the sudden shattering of her hope.

Xia Yu thought he needed to find a way to completely resolve this situation with her.

He thought for a moment and recalled Xu Youxiang’s experience of being forced into marriage. Then he had an idea.

He looked serious and said to Yan Wei, “I already have a girlfriend, and I don’t want her to misunderstand.”

“But I haven’t heard…”

Interrupting Yan Wei’s words, Xia Yu said, “Because she is studying at Yaoguang, and we agreed to meet at Hua University together.”

Letting go of her hand, Yan Wei stepped back two steps, somewhat unwilling to accept it.

“That’s it. If my previous behavior gave you any misunderstanding, I apologize,” said Xia Yu, then quickly walked away into the distance.

After Xia Yu’s back disappeared, Yan Wei dejectedly returned home.

“What’s wrong?” her mother was greatly surprised.

“Nothing,” Yan Wei shook her head and locked herself in her room.

After lying on the bed for a while, she picked up her phone and saw unread messages from Gui Zixiao.

“I heard you two went to eat together?”

Yan Wei then told Gui Zixiao everything.

“That’s not true. If he had a girlfriend, don’t you think I would know? I told you, you pushed too hard. Now look, he’s making things up just to get rid of you.”

Yan Wei bit her lip tightly.

“But it’s actually a good thing. You can pretend he has a girlfriend and interact with him as friends. That way, you can get closer to him more easily!”

Seeing Gui Zixiao’s analysis line by line, Yan Wei became happy again.

On the other side, when Xia Yu returned home, he re-treated the bruise that had been simply handled at the police station. Then he grabbed the black cat rubbing against his legs, begging to be petted.

He definitely wasn’t going to let the attacker off the hook.

At midnight, when the game’s time reset, it would be time to find the attacker.
