Chapter 74: The Failed Ambush

The snake lizard lunged fiercely at Lightdark Eternalsin. Even though Lightdark Eternalsin had strong defenses, he was beginning to struggle under the onslaught.

Hissing, the snake lizard extended its crimson tongue and spewed a cloud of green venom. Within a two-yard radius, the area became enveloped in toxic fumes.

-30, -30—damage numbers floated above Lightdark Eternalsin’s head.

Each attack from the snake lizard dealt 80 damage to Lightdark Eternalsin, who quickly found himself overwhelmed.

“Shiyan, dispel it quickly!”

Shiyan, the priest from Lightdark Eternalsin’s team, immediately cast a dispelling skill. A pure white beam descended, merging into the toxic fog. The thick poison mist immediately began to dissipate.

Lightdark Eternalsin’s health had dropped to only 160. Seeing the snake lizard charge again, he quickly raised his sword to block. The snake lizard bit into him.

-76.

Lightdark Eternalsin used Crippling Strike, slowing the snake lizard immediately. He then hastily retreated.

The elemental mage had just finished chanting his spell. With Frostbind, a thin layer of ice covered the snake lizard’s surface, halting its movements.

This was the freezing effect of the elemental mage’s ice magic.

Behind him, Shiyan quickly cast a healing spell on Lightdark Eternalsin, who also drank a basic potion of slow health regeneration. His health gradually began to recover.

Lightdark Eternalsin remained highly focused. He knew Gu Nie shouldn’t have gone far. If Gu Nie emerged to interfere, the outcome would be unpredictable.

His health had only recovered to about three-quarters when the snake lizard charged again.

Elite sub-bosses were tough to deal with. Even with +2 Death Ritual gear, Lightdark Eternalsin was still losing health rapidly. A team with inferior equipment would likely have wiped already.

Through the efforts of Lightdark Eternalsin’s team, the snake lizard’s health had dropped to about 70%.

“Candy, have you located him yet?”

“No, that guy must be hiding somewhere.”

“Stay alert, Suyan, keep a skill ready!”

“Got it,” replied Suyan, the holy mage. After working together with Lightdark Eternalsin for so long, she understood his subtle hints immediately.

Though unaware of their conversation, Gu Nie knew it must relate to him. However, with ten years of rogue experience, he wouldn’t be caught easily.

“They’re pretty strong. They might actually manage to kill the snake lizard,” Gu Nie thought, eyeing the still-fierce creature. As a level 7 elite sub-boss, it might drop something valuable.

Gu Nie decided not to interfere with Lightdark Eternalsin’s team for now. He’d wait until both sides had worn each other down further before making his move.

Lightdark Eternalsin’s great sword struck the snake lizard repeatedly, dealing massive damage.

“How much mana remains?” Lightdark Eternalsin’s low voice asked in the party chat.

“67%.”

“78%.”

“32%,” replied the elemental mage, glancing nervously at Lightdark Eternalsin, fearing his anger.

“What happened?” Lightdark Eternalsin frowned.

“We started the fight before fully restoring mana and used several high-damage spells afterward.”

“Fine, conserve mana,” Lightdark Eternalsin said, not pressing further after hearing the explanation.

The elemental mage switched to using low-mana-cost Ice Arrows. Eventually, his mana ran dry, so he drank a mana potion, restoring his mana to 67%.

Under continuous magical assault, the snake lizard’s health dropped to only 20%.

With just over 200 health remaining, Lightdark Eternalsin and his team were at their most tense moment.

The snake lizard’s skin flushed with an unusual red hue, and it emitted a low, guttural hiss. Suddenly, the ground beneath Lightdark Eternalsin turned muddy.

Startled, Lightdark Eternalsin realized his feet were stuck in the mire.

The snake lizard lunged forward. Lightdark Eternalsin quickly used Whirlwind Strike, knocking the snake lizard back a few steps.

Seeing Lightdark Eternalsin trapped, Candy suddenly realized something and urgently shouted in the party chat, “Shiyan, use Light!”

Hearing Candy’s warning, Shiyan the priest wasted no time. He raised his palm, launching a white glowing orb into the sky, emitting blinding light. The brilliant white light flowed like mercury across the ground.

Under the bright illumination, five yards behind the priest, the light shimmered strangely, faintly revealing a human silhouette. A dagger shot straight toward the priest’s head.

“There he is!” Candy shouted, charging at Nie Yan with his dagger.

Clang! Two daggers clashed together.

Nie Yan had finally found an opportunity. He had silently crept behind the priest, but Candy had unexpectedly detected and blocked his attack.

Nie Yan originally planned to kill the priest named Shiyan. Without healing, Lightdark Eternalsin would likely perish as well, achieving a two-birds-with-one-stone outcome.

He hadn’t expected his nearly flawless stealth to be detected.

This was the first failed ambush since his rebirth!

Blocked by Candy, the priest had already fled. The ambush was pointless now. Nie Yan activated Rapid Retreat and quickly withdrew.

Boom! A bolt of lightning struck from the sky, narrowly missing Nie Yan.

Immediately afterward, a beam of light hit Nie Yan, though it caused no damage.

Having locked onto her target, the distant holy mage Suyan smiled slightly. This time, she thought, let’s see if you dare to hide again.

A white glowing mark appeared above Nie Yan’s head, accurately displaying his location wherever he moved.

Discovering the glowing mark, Nie Yan was alarmed and quickly retreated.

Candy chased after Nie Yan, but his speed lagged significantly behind. After Nie Yan used Rapid Retreat, Candy couldn’t keep up and was soon left far behind.

These players were too strong. Nie Yan realized he couldn’t gain any advantage here and decided to give up, running away to disengage from combat.

“Candy, how did you spot him?” Shiyan felt relieved after narrowly escaping death. Nie Yan had been extremely close. One moment later, and not only would he have been in danger, but Lightdark Eternalsin might have died too.

“My perception isn’t that high. I kept wondering why that person hadn’t attacked yet. Logically, there had been several good opportunities earlier. I tried to think like that rogue, imagining when would be the best moment to strike. When I saw Lightdark Eternalsin stuck in the mud, I guessed he might act then, so I asked you to cast Light. Fortunately, we really found him,” Candy explained. If he had been just a moment later, Shiyan likely wouldn’t have survived. Nie Yan’s stealth had been nearly perfect. Candy’s detection had been largely due to luck.

Candy looked into the jungle. Nie Yan had already vanished into the distant underbrush.

The glowing mark lasted two minutes. During that time, if Nie Yan approached, they could detect him immediately. Therefore, they no longer needed to worry about his ambush.
