Chapter 10: A Decade’s Fairy Tale

The black wolf used the last bit of his strength to push Yao Zuizui away. “Go away. Otherwise, I’ll eat you!”

He thought he could put on his most ferocious expression, but his weak voice and frail body were nothing like the strong and fierce black wolf he once was.

Yao Zuizui wasn’t afraid of him at all.

But Yao Zuizui really left.

Without saying a word, she walked out of his room.

The black wolf’s gaze followed her until she turned the corner and disappeared from sight.

He sighed despondently.

The little pig was still so obedient, so good.

And he… was probably going to die soon.

He wondered if the little pig had a good memory—how long would she remember him?

Little pig, I’m sorry.

I can’t hold you anymore, or kiss you, or even ruffle your little head.

All I can do is give you everything I have and watch you from afar, happy and carefree.

The black wolf closed his eyes. His body felt heavier and heavier, then lighter and lighter, a contradictory sensation swirling and battling inside him.

It was as if he were about to turn into a weightless balloon and float into the sky, or as if he were about to become a boulder sinking into the earth.

Suddenly, the sound of footsteps shattered the surrounding silence.

The black wolf didn’t even have the strength to turn his head.

“Your Majesty! Time to eat!” Yao Zuizui carried a bowl with a tightly sealed lid, making it impossible to see what was inside.

The black wolf’s lips were cracked from weakness. “I can’t eat.”

He was a wolf, not a herbivore.

After eating nothing but greens for so long, all he wanted was meat. He couldn’t stomach anything else.

“Your Majesty, it’s meat!” Yao Zuizui lifted the lid, and the rich aroma of meat filled the room, permeating every molecule in the air, making the black wolf’s stomach clench with hunger.

The black wolf frowned. Where had this silly little pig gotten meat from?

Had she cut it from her own body?

With effort, he spoke, “Turn around for me.”

Yao Zuizui obediently spun in a circle, bowl in hand, completely unharmed.

Only then did the black wolf relax. “Feed me.”

He didn’t have the strength to hold the bowl or utensils, and besides, he wanted to enjoy the little pig’s service.

Yao Zuizui reminded herself to endure, to comply with the black wolf’s unreasonable demands. Only then could she quickly purify the gluttony in his soul fragment and return to the Immortal Venerable’s side.

She picked up a spoon and scooped a mouthful of meat broth. “Your Majesty, say ‘ah’~”

The black wolf obediently opened his mouth, though he didn’t foolishly mimic her “ah.”

As long as it wasn’t the little pig’s flesh, he could eat without guilt or hesitation.

Even if he devoured every small creature in the forest, he wouldn’t care. After all, small animals existed to be eaten by him.

Yao Zuizui fed him spoonful by spoonful until he gradually regained his strength, no longer looking so defeated.

“Your Majesty, was it delicious?” Yao Zuizui blinked.

“Mhm.” The black wolf nodded. Anything made by the little pig was delicious, but meat dishes were especially so.

“Your Majesty, all of this was made from mushrooms~” Yao Zuizui stuck out her tongue playfully, stunning the black wolf.

He smacked his lips. The rich meaty flavor still lingered in his mouth—his second-favorite taste. How could he have mistaken it?

With a look begging for praise, Yao Zuizui explained what had happened.

During her time in the animal paradise, she hadn’t been idle.

She had traded IOUs for supplies and sent them to the squirrel scientist, asking it to develop ingredients that tasted and nourished like meat.

The squirrel conducted countless experiments, wasting many resources, before finally creating spores for this hybrid mushroom.

This mushroom was a fusion of varieties like king oyster and shiitake, which had a meaty texture, along with other vegetables like eggplant.

It tasted like meat, smelled like meat, and even provided the same nutrients as meat.

It was a godsend for carnivores.

Once she grew these mushrooms, Yao Zuizui happily skipped over to the black wolf.

The black wolf suddenly understood why the little pig had been visiting the squirrel’s home so often.

“Your Majesty, now you can eat meat every meal without starving~” Yao Zuizui swayed her head cheerfully.

“Mhm.” The black wolf’s eyes shimmered with amusement.

“Your Majesty, would you be unhappy if you had to give up meat?” Yao Zuizui probed.

“No.” The black wolf shook his head without hesitation. “Even if you asked me to eat nothing, I wouldn’t be unhappy.”

It was as if the black wolf had transformed into some kind of loyal dog.

His gaze followed Yao Zuizui wherever she went.

Yao Zuizui smiled happily and hugged his waist.

Though his fur was still a bit prickly against her face, it would soon grow soft and smooth again.

Now, all she had to do was guard this little house and wait patiently for all traces of gluttony in the black wolf’s soul to vanish completely.

Once his soul fragment was purified, he would leave this plane, and she could follow.

The black wolf didn’t know what Yao Zuizui was scheming. He only felt blissful.

Holding the little pig felt like holding the entire world.

He was truly happy—happier than eating the most delicious meat in the world.

At last, he and the little pig could live in this small house, in this vast forest, for the rest of their lives.

Yao Zuizui cooked the mushrooms in countless ways for the black wolf.

Their texture and shape were so similar to meat that the dishes were indistinguishable from the real thing.

Braised pork, sweet and sour pork ribs, steamed pork with rice flour, boiled meat chunks…

But the black wolf’s interest in meat dwindled.

Instead, his eyes gleamed with a faint green light whenever he saw Yao Zuizui.

Sometimes, when she urged him to eat, he would pull her into an embrace, kissing and nuzzling her before reluctantly letting go to eat.

Yao Zuizui was exasperated but secretly delighted.

She couldn’t wait to leave.

For the sake of world peace, she had endured so much hardship. The celestial realm really ought to award her a little golden statue.

About a year passed in this peaceful, carefree manner.

Yao Zuizui sat by the door, lost in thought, wondering why the gluttony in the black wolf’s soul hadn’t fully purified yet.

The black wolf hugged her from behind. “What are you thinking about, little pig?”

“Your Majesty, do you want to eat meat now?” Yao Zuizui lifted her chin to look at him.

“No. I just want to eat you.” The black wolf answered without hesitation.

Right! Yao Zuizui realized. The gluttony in the black wolf’s soul must have disappeared. So why hadn’t he vanished yet? Why was she still here?

With a happy facade and a suffering heart, Yao Zuizui endured another year.

One morning, she had just woken up when the black wolf walked in with breakfast.

By now, his cooking skills surpassed hers.

The black wolf hated the kitchen fumes irritating his little pig, fearing they would ruin her skin, so he forbade her from entering the kitchen.

“Your Majesty, thank you!” Yao Zuizui happily took the spoon and began eating the milk pudding.

Now, eating the black wolf’s cooking was the only joy in her miserable days.

The forest air was fresh, filled with bright sunlight, lush trees, and rustling winds—everything was beautiful and serene.

But Yao Zuizui wasn’t happy at all. She longed to leave.

The black wolf seemed to sense her unhappiness but never asked about it.

Instead, he cooked her delicious meals and told her jokes.

Sweet ice cream, fluffy honey cake, crispy millet crackers…

Not only had the black wolf mastered many of Yao Zuizui’s recipes, but he had also experimented with new dishes from cookbooks.

As long as he saw the satisfied glow in her big eyes as she ate, he would never give up, no matter how many failures he faced.

As for jokes… that wasn’t the black wolf’s forte.

“Little pig, I heard a joke today.” The black wolf held Yao Zuizui in his arms and nuzzled her head.

Yao Zuizui was too listless to react, giving only a vague “mhm.”

“I heard a moose got lost in the forest, so she called a giraffe and said, ‘Hey, I’m lost!’ Guess what the giraffe said?” The black wolf was excited.

Yao Zuizui’s thoughts were sluggish under the warm sun. She gave another absentminded “mhm.”

Unfazed, the black wolf continued earnestly, “The giraffe said, ‘Hey, I’m a giraffe!’… Haha, little pig, isn’t that funny?”

He looked down and saw that the little pig had already fallen asleep.

Truly a little pig.

The black wolf lowered his head and gently kissed her forehead.

Now, he and the little pig mostly lived in human form.

The reason? After the gluttony in his soul was fully purified, he regained his memories as the Great Demon King.

With his memories restored, he found it strange for a wolf to hold a pig.

Holding a delicate, lovely young girl was much better.

But he would never tell Yao Zuizui about his regained memories.

He kissed her forehead softly, lingering for a long, long time.

Little pig, stay with me in this fairy tale for ten years, and then I’ll let you go back.

Do you know how filthy the outside world is? How precious these fairy-tale ten years are?

But… even if you return, you’re still mine.

We have six more planes to go through, and if possible, an eternity beyond that.

You’re mine. I’ll never let you go.

To keep you by my side forever, I wouldn’t care if the heavens collapsed or the world drowned in floods. I wouldn’t even blink if I had to destroy everything.

Little pig, my Zuizui.

When will you realize how much I love you…

The black wolf gazed at the little pig’s peaceful sleeping face, his eyes filled with a tenderness more intoxicating than moonlight.
