Chapter 8: Great Fortune (3)

Lu Yu received some shocking information.

Among monsters, the relationship between Wolf Demon and Demon Ape wasn’t particularly significant. But for humans, this revelation was enough to be earth-shattering.

Killing a Wolf Demon allowed one to control Demon Apes, proving the strict hierarchy among monsters. More importantly, Demon Apes could be controlled and used for mining Star Spirit Ore. Only by controlling the Demon Apes could one truly control the mine; otherwise, to others, that area was just a range of dark mountains.

In Lu Yu’s mind, a massive shadow was gradually taking shape, forming a vague outline.

“Our leader’s territory still has five Demon Apes and three Star Spirit Stones,” one slightly smarter Demon Ape revealed another piece of intelligence.

“Three Star Spirit Stones?” Lu Yu was slightly stunned, his heart vibrating as he said, “Take me there to see them.”

He had nearly risked his life for just one. Now, with three available, he could upgrade either his Stone Rod or Blood Shield directly to the highest level. With the Wolf Demon Rod, even these Demon Apes would find it hard to stop him.

Lu Yu ordered the Demon Apes to rise and lead the way. These Demon Appes immediately stood up, but suddenly rushed to the Wolf Demon’s corpse, competing to devour it. Within ten minutes, the three-meter-tall Wolf Demon was reduced to nothing but a skeleton.

Only then did the Demon Apes respectfully pick up the Star Spirit Stones and walked ahead to guide the way.

The territory the Demon Apes mentioned wasn’t far from the business building where Lu Yu resided—only two blocks away.

As they were passing through one block, suddenly a gunshot rang out.

Immediately afterward, one of the Demon Apes in front of Lu Yu let out a shriek of pain before its head exploded.

“Roar!” The remaining six Demon Apes might have shown respect to Lu Yu, but they certainly didn’t to others. Upon witnessing their companion’s death, all six immediately dropped their ores, dropped onto all fours, and darted like lightning toward the source of the gunshot.

“Peng! Peng!”

Several more gunshots followed.

However, the bullets couldn’t even hit the Demon Apes, and even when they did strike, they merely splattered blood and tore off some flesh, which quickly regenerated. The real running speed of the Demon Apes was no slower than that of a cheetah!

They quickly approached a high-rise building, and with iron-like claws, they pierced the walls and began climbing upward.

At this moment, dozens of people rushed out from a dark alley.

Some of them carried iron rods, some wielded steel rebar, and two held handguns. Together, they surrounded the wall area, preparing to act.

As if they had rehearsed dozens of times, they skillfully raised their weapons, ready to throw them, attempting to deplete the Demon Apes’ health through sheer numbers.

“Stop!”

Just as these people were about to strike, someone shouted from behind.

They turned around and saw a man standing there, carrying a two-meter-long stone rod, which left them momentarily stunned.

Meanwhile, the Demon Apes climbing the building leaped down, ran back to Lu Yu’s side, and respectfully picked up the Star Spirit Ore before hiding behind him.

“What’s going on?”

“Is that guy human or a monster?”

They looked at Lu Yu and then at the Demon Apes, all of them stunned into silence. How could a monster possibly obey a human?

“Who are you?” A large man stepped forward, glancing at Lu Yu and asking, “Why do these monsters listen to you?”

Lu Yu looked at the fallen Demon Ape and replied, “You can kill this one if you want, but I have use for these six. Find others instead.”

As a fellow human, Lu Yu understood their mindset. Everyone wanted to survive, and uniting to kill monsters was inevitable. He didn’t blame them.

Still, dozens of people stared at Lu Yu as if he were a monster.

The large man looked at Lu Yu, then at the six Demon Apes and the stones they carried.

His eyes flickered, and he smiled slightly. “Friend, could you tell us how you control these Demon Apes, and what’s special about those stones they’re holding?”

As he spoke, his gaze occasionally flicked toward the stone rod in Lu Yu’s hands and the silver blade at his waist.

“Sorry, I don’t have that intention,” Lu Yu replied with a smile.

Everyone had a selfish side, himself included. Revealing his method might result in him being the next one killed instead of the Demon Apes.

The large man had expected this and chuckled, “Friend, I think you misunderstood. We’re part of the patrol team from the survivor camp in Fangang. We came out mainly to survey the surroundings and, of course, to hunt some monsters. If you’re not comfortable sharing that information, could you at least let us have these Demon Apes? Since you can control them, you must have ways to control others. You must be a master. I believe finding more Demon Apes wouldn’t be difficult for you. But for us, even one or two Star Spirit Stones could be extremely important.”

“Controlling them isn’t easy,” Lu Yu said. “That’s why I don’t plan to give them up. I hope you can understand. In times like these, controlling these Demon Apes is of great significance.”

Among the crowd, several nodded in agreement.

They envied Lu Yu.

Having control of a few Demon Apes meant having expendable shields in danger. During hunts, having a few Demon Apes could make it easier to kill enemies, with efficiency many times that of a single person. Such an ability was something no one would willingly share.

The large man smiled and said, “Friend, you should understand how difficult survival is in this city now. I still hope you can tell us how you control the Demon Apes or the use of those stones. Just one of the two will suffice.”

Lu Yu shook his head and smiled, “I think you should understand why I don’t want to end up like that Demon Ape, with my head blown off in the next second.”

As he spoke, he seemed to be scared, stepping back twice, coincidentally moving right into the center of the six Demon Apes.

The tall Demon Apes blocked most of Lu Yu’s body.

The large man was slightly taken aback, his smile fading as he looked at Lu Yu in surprise.

Just now, he had secretly signaled the hidden sniper on the building to aim at Lu Yu.

But now, Lu Yu’s seemingly frightened movement looked too convenient.

The large man realized he had encountered a tricky situation. This seemingly harmless young man was anything but ordinary.

Therefore, the large man’s expression immediately turned cold.

Then, with a wave of his hand, dozens of people quickly spread out, surrounding Lu Yu and the Demon Apes in the center.

“Roar!” The six Demon Apes immediately dropped onto all fours, assuming an attacking stance.

They could sense the hostility of these people toward Lu Yu.

They were the lowest-ranking monsters who only obeyed their leader. Without their leader’s command, they wouldn’t attack.

But if their leader gave the order, they would tear apart any living being.

The large man said coldly, “Friend, I’ve said everything. Either tell us how to control the Demon Apes or the use of the stones. Leave one behind. Otherwise, do you really think you can dodge bullets?”

Lu Yu glanced at the people surrounding him.

These people were poorly dressed and carried various makeshift weapons, more like a group of former refugees.

“What? Do you think such a display can intimidate me?” Lu Yu said disdainfully, “Either shoot, or let me go.”

Lu Yu’s expression didn’t change at all as he coldly stared at the large man and said, “But if you dare to fire the first shot, either you kill me, or I’ll make sure you die!”

The word “die” almost burst from between Lu Yu’s teeth, filled with chilling menace.

The large man was slightly startled by Lu Yu’s cold words, then sneered, “Young man, you really think you can dodge bullets.”

As he spoke, he heavily waved his hand.

“Peng!”

A gunshot rang out, followed by a bullet whizzing past Lu Yu’s nose, showcasing precise marksmanship.

“I’ve ordered to shoot. Can you kill me?” The large man pulled out a military knife from his waist and gestured at Lu Yu with it, “Last chance. Either tell me how you control the Demon Apes, or I have fifteen ways to make you speak.”

“I only need one,” Lu Yu smiled at the large man, his smile so bright, like a child who had just gotten a new toy.

However, as soon as that smile flashed across Lu Yu’s face, he moved, his body suddenly radiating a red glow.

The Blood Shield had activated, signaling his attack.

Lu Yu’s right foot pushed off the ground, and his body suddenly leaned forward and charged.

“Peng!”

The gunshot from the building sounded again.

But in the split second before the gunshot, Lu Yu suddenly stopped, slightly leaning his body backward.

The bullet struck half a meter in front of Lu Yu, the bullet head bouncing up.

“What, dodging bullets?” Many people’s eyes nearly popped out.

How could a human dodge bullets?

Especially in the split second before the gunshot, Lu Yu had predicted the timing and narrowly dodged the shot.

This was too unreal.

This kind of scene should only exist in movies.

Dozens of people stared at Lu Yu in shock, their mouths agape.

After that brief pause, Lu Yu placed one hand on his waist, the silver blade fell into his hand, and then he threw it straight at the large man like a line.

Peng.

The second shot arrived.

This bullet entered Lu Yu’s ribs and exited through his lower back, taking away a palm-sized chunk of flesh.

But Lu Yu didn’t even furrow his brows. He pushed off the ground with both feet and moved forward several meters in an instant.

This time, the stone rod on his shoulder swung.

Whoosh!

The two-meter-long stone rod, weighing at least two hundred jin, roared through the air like a violent wind.

This swing was even fiercer than when the Wolf Demon swung it, the force so strong that it created a dull sound in the air.

The large man hadn’t expected this young man to be so ruthless.

He really dared to charge forward, ignoring the bullets. Was this guy crazy?

In less than half a second after dodging the silver blade, Lu Yu was already in front of the large man, swinging the stone rod downward.

He knew it was unwise to use his short knife to block the stone rod head-on.

Therefore, he sidestepped to dodge the swing.

However, what the large man hadn’t anticipated was that the stone rod, after missing its target, suddenly changed from a downward strike to a horizontal sweep.

This sudden change directly hit the large man’s chest.

The large man knew Lu Yu wasn’t an ordinary person.

But he hadn’t expected this young man to be this ruthless and decisive. Even most people on the streets of Fangang wouldn’t be as ruthless and fast as Lu Yu.

“Crack!”

Half of the large man’s chest collapsed, and he was swept into the air by the stone rod.

“Ahh!”

The large man screamed as he flew into the air.

Blood spurted from his mouth. As he was about to land, he saw a huge black shadow already descending upon him.

Peng!

The stone rod flew from Lu Yu’s hand like a thrown stone, hitting the large man directly on the head.

“Crack.” The large man’s skull cracked, blood flowing from his eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. He collapsed to the ground, nearly unconscious.

At this point, the third shot finally rang out.

Lu Yu’s movements were too fast, making it difficult for the sniper to aim.

This bullet passed through Lu Yu’s left scapula, taking away several bone fragments.

Three consecutive shots had cost Lu Yu 260 health points.

Without the silver blade in hand, his health was now down to 350. The remaining 90 health points brought his total health below 100.

The wound on his shoulder from the last bullet became difficult to heal.

Half of Lu Yu’s body was soaked in blood.

The large man wasn’t faring much better either. Two strikes from the stone rod had reduced his health to less than 70 points.

Especially the blow to his head.

The special effect of the Wolf Demon Rod activated, preventing the large man from being stunned but also making it impossible for him to move.

Silence fell around.

Eyes stared at Lu Yu, then at the large man, involuntarily drawing in cold breaths.

The large man was considered quite strong in their camp.

Yet this young man seemed even stronger. Two consecutive strikes were enough to overwhelm the large man.

Especially considering the damage from bullets, which they were all too familiar with.

Those three shots should have taken out at least 230 health points.

Even so, this young man still hadn’t died. His health must be at least 300.

300 health points—where did this person get such high health?

The large man himself only had 270 points.

But now wasn’t the time for them to be shocked.

The fourth gunshot rang out.

This time, the bullet grazed past Lu Yu’s chest.

The sniper had missed.

But this miss allowed Lu Yu to reach the large man’s side directly.

The large man regained consciousness from his daze, and upon seeing Lu Yu right in front of him, his heart nearly stopped.

He never expected Lu Yu to actually dare to kill him.

“You… you kill me, you will also die,” the large man cried out in fear. He was terrified, never imagining he would die here.

Lu Yu’s right hand slashed across the large man’s neck like a blade cutting through skin, directly slicing open his throat and artery.

Then, Lu Yu heavily stepped on the large man’s chest with one foot.

The people around could see the large man’s ribcage completely collapse, his heart likely crushed.

There was not a trace of mercy.

Lu Yu ended a man’s life in less than ten seconds, without even furrowing his brows.

The gunshots didn’t sound again.

The sniper realized the large man was beyond saving.

No one else moved either.

They didn’t have time to react before the battle was over.

Lu Yu couldn’t help but smile.

Because, having been shot three times, his Kill Star Soul had stirred again.

Faint electric currents danced through his body.

“Congratulations, your Kill Star Soul has been activated. Base data has increased. Base attack power increased by 30 points, life increased by 20 points, physical strength increased by 20 points.”

“Congratulations, combat has activated your Kill Star Soul. You are 70% away from upgrading your Kill Star Soul to level one. Continue to strive. Upgrading to level one of the Kill Star Soul will grant you unexpected rewards.”

Text flickered in front of Lu Yu, more beautiful than any color.

But to the people on the other side, this smile was somewhat chilling, like the laugh of a demon.

They retreated in terror, not knowing whether this person would kill them next.
