Chapter 18: Little Brother

The dominant class in country U is the middle class, primarily consisting of early European immigrants. When they migrated, they were commoners who admired the aristocratic upper-class lifestyle of Europe and hoped their children could also appear refined and well-mannered. Therefore, they imposed relatively strict family education on their children. This is not like what some people propagate—that the lifestyle of their children is extremely undisciplined. Thus, the girls are also quite cautious when interacting with boys.

Now, a young boy has moved into the dormitory, and for Finny, Kelly, and Sylvia, ever since they were attracted by Mu Lin’s delicious food, they have been clinging to him daily. Almost whenever they are not in class, one of them follows Mu Lin around, buying various ingredients for him to cook, and their visits to the cafeteria have noticeably decreased.

This has greatly worried the boys who are pursuing these three girls. Mu Lin, however, does not want to waste too much time here. This semester, he has enrolled in all the courses offered by various majors, from freshman to senior year. In U country, there is still discrimination against Asians, especially Chinese people.

Seeing the three girls constantly circling around Mu Lin, some people have decided to give him a hard time. Every morning, Mu Lin still practices his martial arts in his apartment room. He eats breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the cafeteria, while in the evenings he cooks dinner for the girls. The girls eat their own meals in the morning and at noon and don’t need Mu Lin to cook for them.

This was what Mu Lin fought hard to achieve. Regarding the three girls, Mu Lin now feels helpless—he cannot hit them nor scold them effectively. The three girls have grown increasingly interested in him, constantly clinging to him. Mu Lin has no experience dealing with girls older than himself. The only time he interacted with an older girl was with Hong Jiani in Hong Kong, but that was when he was furious and considered himself a doctor, so he didn’t have any particular thoughts at the time or look at her carefully. However, Hong Jiani’s youthful and vibrant figure often appears in his mind afterward.

If allowed, perhaps they would even move into his room. Mu Lin cannot figure out why they are so interested in him. What he has not realized is that the spiritual awareness emitted by the Daoist techniques of Xuanqing Palace covers a relatively large range. Typically, Daoist cultivation is practiced in mountains or Daoist temples, partly to avoid disturbing the secular world and partly because once the golden elixir is formed, the emitted spiritual awareness helps stabilize a Daoist’s mind.

Mu Lin lacked such experience and guidance from elders. During his three years of traveling studies, he mostly stayed in the wild and only stayed in one place for a limited time, so he never caused a situation where a large group of people followed him.

Now, Mu Lin has practiced in his apartment for more than two months, his spiritual awareness covering the three girls daily. Coupled with their inner curiosity and growing fondness for him, the three girls unconsciously became captivated by Mu Lin, so they become anxious when they don’t see him.

One morning, as usual, Mu Lin arrived at the cafeteria, with Sylvia following behind. As he started eating after getting his meal, a voice came from behind: “How come there is a yellow monkey here eating with us?”

“Yeah! There are more and more yellow monkeys in the college. It’s really disgusting!” The voice was loud and grating.

Mu Lin didn’t even turn around and loudly replied, “Yeah! How did two animals get into the college cafeteria? How can anyone eat like this?”

“You motherf***er! Have the guts to come to the college boxing ring! I’ll teach you a lesson, you sickly Asian!”

Mu Lin finished his breakfast heartily, turned around, and saw two tall young men with blond hair, about 1.80 to 1.90 meters tall. He recognized them as Sylvia’s admirers. He merely wanted to teach them a lesson at the boxing ring, so he coldly replied, “I’d be delighted to oblige!”

“No! Daniel, you can’t go to the boxing ring with them! You’re only 15 years old!” Sylvia shouted loudly, trying to stop him.

Seeing Mu Lin’s dark expression, she shouted at the two boys, “Steve! You bad guy, I will report your hooligan behavior to your parents!”

“Aha! Daniel, you can’t go! You’re only 15!” The taller youth, in a high-pitched voice, imitated Sylvia’s words, causing a stir among the crowd eating breakfast.

The shorter youth added, “Sylvia, we’ll tell your parents that you’ve hooked up with a little yellow monkey brother at college!” The crowd burst into laughter.

Sylvia’s face turned bright red, tears silently streaming down her cheeks, and her body trembling with anger. Mu Lin approached the two youths and said solemnly, “Right now, your behavior has seriously insulted Sylvia. As a gentleman, you need to apologize to her. At the same time, your racial discrimination against me has insulted my dignity. I demand that you apologize to me, or else you should be prepared to receive a letter from my lawyer!”

The surrounding crowd saw that Mu Lin was only about 1.65 meters tall, standing in front of the two youths like a child facing adults. In normal circumstances, someone would have already backed down, but seeing Mu Lin bravely stepping forward, the crowd praised him and loudly criticized the two youths’ behavior. Several of Sylvia’s classmates even stepped forward to comfort her.

The murmurs reached the ears of the two youths, and their faces turned purplish. “Kid! All of this is your doing, and you dare to threaten us!” The taller youth grabbed Mu Lin’s collar fiercely with his right hand.

Mu Lin immediately grabbed the youth’s hand, twisted his arm, causing the youth to loosen his grip. Then Mu Lin hooked his left foot and pushed with his right hand. Before the tall youth could react, he was thrown backward and landed hard on his butt, grimacing in pain.

Seeing his companion get hurt, the shorter youth rushed forward, fists swinging in a hopping sidestep motion, launching a flurry of punches. Mu Lin blocked to the right with both hands, and before the opponent could retract his fists, he extended his left foot and pushed forward, sending the youth flying backward to land beside the tall youth on the ground.

Since these actions happened extremely quickly, people farther away only saw the two youths flying backward and landing, assuming they had been beaten by other students. Their classmates immediately shouted, “Hey! Even though Steve was wrong, you can’t gang up on just the two of them!” and even a few rushed toward the two youths.

When they saw that only Mu Lin was facing the two youths, they were all astonished, mouths agape. Mu Lin had thrown them with just the right amount of force—not enough to overturn the tables, so there was not much commotion. He knew they were not really bad people, just jealous because of their feelings for the girls. Therefore, he didn’t use any hidden force. Since there was no deep hatred, he didn’t want to hurt anyone. Besides, he was already troubled by being constantly followed by the three girls. He had long hoped someone would divert their attention away from him. If he had been too harsh, who would dare to approach them again? He didn’t want to bring such trouble upon himself.

“Idiots! Can’t you see it was just the ‘little brother’ who threw them both down?”

“What! My God! How could such a small ‘little brother’ throw down Steve and them? Don’t you know Steve and Jamie are the school’s boxing champions?”

“Oh! Kung Fu! Chinese Kung Fu!” The crowd murmured in amazement.

“Little brother! Little brother!” The murmurs gradually grew louder, more frequent, and more unified.

In the 1970s, Bruce Lee’s martial arts films swept the entire Western world, and Chinese Kung Fu had also penetrated the hearts of Westerners.

Screaming excitedly, Sylvia shouted, “Little brother, you were amazing!” and rushed to Mu Lin, hugging him tightly. She kept kissing Mu Lin on the forehead and cheeks. In front of everyone, Mu Lin tried pushing her away several times but couldn’t, not wanting to use too much force, so he just let Sylvia hold him.

At this moment, he noticed Steve and the other getting up and preparing to leave. He struggled free from Sylvia’s arms and approached the two youths. Thinking Mu Lin wasn’t done yet, and still stunned from being thrown so quickly, they assumed a defensive posture, looking warily at Mu Lin. The crowd also stopped murmuring and watched Mu Lin.

“I’m sorry. Just now, I didn’t mean to. It’s just that you attacked too fast. It was just a reflex action. I hope I didn’t hurt you,” Mu Lin said.

Hearing Mu Lin apologize, the two were momentarily stunned, their expressions relaxed, and their faces turned even more purple. “No! No! Little brother, I apologize for what I said just now!” Steve stammered. Jamie also readily apologized to Sylvia.

“I know you are Sylvia’s friends, and you didn’t mean any harm. It was just a joke, right? I hope you’ll come to the apartment and play with Sylvia again in the future,” Mu Lin said with a smile to the two youths.

At this moment, looking at Mu Lin’s smile, the two youths felt it was like the devil’s grin. They thought to themselves, “Joke? If you know Chinese Kung Fu, we’d rather die than go to your apartment.” But they replied with their mouths, “Sorry! Little brother, we know that Sylvia and the other two are your girlfriends. We were just ordinary friends with Sylvia, and we won’t bother you again! Goodbye!” After saying that, the two youths ran away quickly.

“What!” Mu Lin shouted in surprise. Just as he was about to chase them, Sylvia had already grabbed him. “Daniel, what are you doing? They already apologized. Why do you want to chase them?”

“Let go!” Mu Lin broke free from Sylvia’s grip, but the two youths were already far away. The surrounding murmurs reached his ears: “Little brother is amazing, actually dating three of the college’s top beauties!”

“My God! Little brother has three girlfriends!” Mu Lin’s face turned dark, and he could only sulkily return to his apartment. From then on, whenever anyone mentioned “little brother,” they knew it was referring to Mu Lin, and they also knew that Mu Lin, at such a young age, already had three girlfriends.

From that day on, the reputation of Mu Lin, the “little brother,” spread throughout the college.
