Chapter 9: Choice

In over a month in the U.S., Mu Lin learned many rules of the world. Not yet 16, he couldn’t get a driver’s license, so he bought an RV. Originally, four servants were employed at home, and two guards each had their own duties. Through an agency, he hired a driver to conveniently pick up and drop off his younger sisters.

He first went to school to complete the procedures for not living on campus, then parked at the school gate to wait for them to finish classes. First to appear was his eldest sister, Mei Fang, walking along, laughing and chatting with several female classmates, while a few male students followed behind.

Once rather introverted, Mei Fang was now dressed casually: a T-shirt, jeans, and sneakers, her pretty face radiating youthfulness. Upon seeing Mu Lin after more than a month, she flushed with excitement, said something to her friends, and hurriedly ran to him, tightly grabbing his arm, tears silently streaming down her face.

Her classmates, seeing this, gathered around, murmuring and teasing. Several boys even looked angry, clenching their fists.

Mu Lin smirked and said, “Hey! Fellas, what’s up? Are you planning to fight with me, Catherine’s brother?”

“Oh my God!” The boys had heard from Mei Fang that her brother was skilled in martial arts and very capable, so they quickly scattered.

Mu Lin took out a handkerchief to wipe Mei Fang’s tears, smiling as he said, “Alright, your brother is back now! Keep crying and you’ll turn into a little dirty-faced kitten! Look, your classmates are making fun of you!” Mei Fang pinched Mu Lin hard before finally breaking into laughter.

At that moment, Meizi, wearing a pale purple dress, came running and threw herself into Mu Lin’s arms, hugging his neck, laughing and shouting with joy. Seeing his two sisters, Mu Lin also smiled happily.

After picking up the two sisters, upon arriving at the newly purchased house, they saw the new villa and servants. When they heard they wouldn’t have to live on campus anymore, they rushed to choose their rooms.

After dinner, Mu Lin told them he had enrolled in a school as a transfer student, had already taken the SAT once, and was preparing for the SAT II test next month, aiming to enter university this fall. During this time, he needed to visit various universities to meet professors and decide on some majors. He would often be away from home. However, wherever he went, he promised to leave contact information, which finally satisfied Mei Fang and Mei Zi.

More than ten days later, after taking the SAT II exam, Mu Lin appeared at Princeton University in New Jersey. New Jersey is located in the northeastern part of the U.S., bordering the Atlantic Ocean, situated on the Delaware River plain. Known for its numerous parks and beautiful scenery, it is called the “Garden State.” Princeton is a small town in central New Jersey. Princeton University, a prestigious Ivy League institution founded in 1746, occupies a 2,600-acre campus in this picturesque town.

Princeton University is world-renowned for its emphasis on quality, research, and theory. Its departments of physics, mathematics, politics, international relations, East Asian studies, mechanical and aerospace engineering, as well as literature and history, are all top-ranked in American higher education.

Mu Lin came here to visit Professors Von Noraman and Kijana. These two professors were also the mentors of his two teachers—one a master of physics and the other a computer science expert.

Back then, the two teachers were the favorite disciples of these professors, but they returned to their homeland upon being called back, which caused the professors much regret. The two teachers often sighed about the care they received here and their inability to visit their professors.

Now that Mu Lin was out, he had the opportunity to repay his teachers’ kindness. Fourteen of Mu Lin’s teachers had received their education in the U.S., so after arriving here, Mu Lin sought out the mentors of his two teachers. His visit was both for greetings and to see if he could repay their kindness on behalf of his teachers.

After making appointments, when the two professors heard that a friend of their student, whom they hadn’t seen in over twenty years, had come to visit, they immediately arranged meetings and canceled other activities.

Mu Lin first met Professor Von Noraman. In the professor’s office, Mu Lin formally met Professor Von Noraman.

He was a thin, elderly man in his seventies with gray hair. When he saw Mu Lin, the professor was momentarily surprised by his youth. Mu Lin quickly explained that he was a student of Professor Weiss Li and had come to visit on behalf of his teacher.

The professor was delighted, asking about his former student and subtly inquiring about Mu Lin’s background and some professional topics. Mu Lin answered fluently, openly sharing everything about himself except for his cultivation practices and gambling winnings.

When the professor learned that his former student was also now teaching, he felt a sense of pride. Upon hearing about Mu Lin’s extraordinary experiences, he was amazed by his vast knowledge. They chatted happily, and before long, the professor had already come to regard Mu Lin as his own grandson, inviting him to have lunch together.

When the professor stood up, he suddenly felt dizzy, and Mu Lin quickly helped him sit back down. He said, “Professor Noraman, I’m really sorry. I didn’t know you were unwell. Thank you for seeing me despite your illness. It seems you’ve been sick for quite some time—why haven’t you gone to the hospital for treatment?”

“Haha! It’s just an old ailment, child. No need to apologize. I’m old, and old people have many ailments. The hospital can’t cure this, so why waste time and trouble the hospital?” The professor chuckled.

“Then, may I examine you?” Mu Lin asked. “Oh, my God! You know medicine too? Is it your amazing traditional Chinese medicine?”

“Yes! I have three teachers in medicine—one is a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner. One graduated from Duke University, and another from MIT.” Mu Lin didn’t mention his great-granduncle.

“Oh, wonderful! My boy, I hope I can witness your medical skills after lunch.” The professor, who now regarded Mu Lin as his own grandson, although somewhat skeptical about his experiences, still thought it would be good to give the boy some confidence and that there was no harm in letting him try.

After lunch, Mu Lin returned to his accommodation to fetch his medical tools and asked the professor to rest. He needed to wait until the professor had rested before proceeding with acupuncture.

At first, the professor watched with interest as Mu Lin took out a stethoscope, blood pressure monitor, thermometer, and medicine bottles. But when Mu Lin pulled out a set of acupuncture needles, the professor was horrified and quickly stepped back, saying, “No! No! My boy! You’re not going to treat me with those needles, are you?”

“It depends on the results of the examination, professor. Maybe I won’t need them,” Mu Lin replied seriously.

At that time in the Western world, little was known about traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture. Many believed it involved using book covers and roots as medicine and randomly poking people with needles, placing it in the same category as African witch doctors. Hence, the professor reacted this way when seeing the needles.

Mu Lin first used the stethoscope to listen to the professor’s lungs and bronchi for any abnormal sounds, then checked his blood pressure, reviewed some lab reports and X-rays. He then asked the professor to extend his hand for pulse diagnosis, while subtly using his spiritual awareness to examine the internal organs. He found no major problems, just some blocked meridians causing organ aging and some anemia, which led to dizziness.

Watching Mu Lin carefully examine him and then asking him to extend his hand, the professor found it somewhat amusing. Many renowned doctors from top hospitals around the world had treated his condition without curing it, only alleviating the symptoms. Could this young man from China really surprise him today?

After finishing the examination, Mu Lin said to the professor, “Professor, your dizziness is due to aging, lack of exercise, and long-term work fatigue, which caused some of the blood vessels in your brain to age and become blocked, leading to functional neurological issues and cerebral ischemia. This has been going on for about fifteen years. If you had come to me back then, I could have cured it with just a few acupuncture needles. Now, it’s still a minor issue. With some medication and an hour of acupuncture, about two hours in total, you’ll be completely healed. Now, do you still want me to treat you? The choice is yours.”

The professor’s expression initially showed surprise, then astonishment, and finally his mouth hung open in disbelief, ending with a bitter and uncertain look.

“My God, this is a genius, a young genius! In such a short time, merely by looking at my medical records and using the most basic diagnostic methods, he accurately described my condition. Is this still a child? No! He’s not a child! He’s a devil, an absolute devil! He lured me with the promise of a cure, assuring me it would take only a short time, and then he wants to stick me with those long needles and make me take medicines made from tree bark and roots. Is this real or just a huge lie? Can my body even handle it?” The professor was now uncertain himself.
