Chapter 24: The Ghost Forest

Ghost Forest, located in the western suburbs of Liu Mang Town, is a dense woodland perpetually shrouded in eerie, deep-blue mist. At night, countless terrifying sounds echo through the air, and ghostly, pale flames flicker eerily, thus earning it the name—Ghost Forest!

Whether common townsfolk, monks, Taoist priests, wandering martial artists, or reclusive sages, anyone who enters this forest does so in groups, yet none ever return. Occasionally, torn pieces of clothing are blown out by chilling winds, but no living soul has ever emerged from Ghost Forest.

From then on, the name Ghost Forest not only spread fear throughout Liu Mang Town, but was regarded as a most ominous place across the entire Aolai Kingdom! Legend even claims that birds flying overhead would be devoured by monsters.

Now, Qiao San has the “honor” of becoming the first living person in a hundred years to enter Ghost Forest. Truly, he must be frightened to death to even dare step inside!

“Clack, clack…” His teeth chattered uncontrollably, his legs feeling as heavy as mountains. Upon first laying eyes on the deep-blue mist and ghostly flames, Qiao San could barely muster the courage to cry out, “Oh… my goodness! I’m done for this time, waaah…”

“Whoosh, whoosh…” Suddenly, a chilling gust swept through. By the flickering glow of the ghostly blue flames, Qiao San focused his gaze—only to be so terrified his soul seemed to flee his body!

“Yaa!” A piercing scream tore through the sky. The once bold Qiao San, now anything but brave, reacted just like any normal human—he turned and fled, his survival instinct propelling him forward faster than an arrow!

Heavens! Within that chilling wind was a dark shadow, drooling at him hungrily—yes, drooling with ravenous desire!

“Thud, thud…” Frantic footsteps echoed through the woods, kicking up swirling leaves and broken branches flying into the air.

Qiao San was definitely a smart guy. Years of street-smart experience had sharpened his reflexes. Although panic gripped him and he couldn’t tell direction within the forest, instinctively he kept running straight ahead, believing the Ghost Forest wasn’t too large. He figured he could escape within the time it took to drink a cup of tea.

“Heh, heh…” A cup of tea’s time passed, and Qiao San was still running!

“Hoo, hoo…” A stick of incense burned away—still Qiao San ran for his life!

“Ugh—” After an hour or so, Qiao San stopped running—not because he wanted to, but because he had completely exhausted himself, his fighting spirit utterly gone! Goodness! How could an ordinary man possibly stand a chance against Ghost Forest?

The young ruffian slumped against a huge tree, panting heavily while glancing around.

“Hey?!” A surprised gasp broke through his fear. Before Qiao San stretched the same sparse, eerie woods—but now the strange, chilling blue mist had vanished. Above him, even more strangely, hung a red moon.

A red… moon?! Qiao San’s heart jolted. He blinked hard, staring up repeatedly in disbelief.

Heavens! It really was a blood-red moon! How could this be?! In all his years, he had never seen such a moon before. And why did the sky feel so strange? As if… as if he had entered an entirely different realm!

Still catching his breath, the promising young rogue suddenly turned deathly pale. A terrifying thought invaded his mind—the worst any ordinary person could imagine. Oh no! Could it be that he was already… dead?! Was this the underworld?! Otherwise, why a red moon?!

“Chirp, chirp…” Just then, a snow-white rabbit hopped out from the bushes, curiously eyeing Qiao San before cautiously approaching.

White rabbits always symbolize cuteness. Qiao San’s anxiety eased slightly, and with a bitter smile, he stretched his arms toward the rabbit. “Hehe… little bunny, come here. Let’s keep each other company!”

The rabbit first took a few steps back, tilting its head carefully to examine Qiao San again. Then, suddenly, it charged toward him—fast!

The cute little white rabbit let out a beastly roar! Before Qiao San could react, the rabbit’s mouth stretched into a monstrous jaw, wide enough to swallow him whole!

Qiao San didn’t even have time to scream in terror. The mutated rabbit’s gleaming teeth came down from above—he could even see its spiky tongue!

Just as death seemed certain, a black shadow shot like an arrow past Qiao San’s nose, its enormous mouth seizing the airborne demon rabbit mid-air. A crunching, tearing sound followed.

“My… my goodness!” Qiao San, saved by this unexpected rescue, felt no relief—because the giant wolf devoured the rabbit in moments, then turned its eerie blue eyes toward him.

“Human, delicious meal!” The beast spoke those few simple words, adding yet more terror to this eerie realm.

At those words, Qiao San’s courage vanished completely. The mysterious yang energy within him had lost all effect in this place of extreme yin. The moment the demon wolf spoke its first word, somehow Qiao San found a last bit of strength from nowhere, and with a whoosh, he began fleeing once again!

“Aaaoo…” The demon wolf howled at the red moon. The scent of Qiao San was delicious—its demonic instincts told it clearly: if it devoured this man, it would level up—from demon wolf to wolf demon, achieving true demonic form and powerful magical abilities!

“Boom…” The earth trembled. Just as the demon wolf prepared to leap after Qiao San, suddenly a massive leg, like a mountain, descended from the sky and crushed it into a pulp.

The heavyset demon bull, half beast and half demon, flattened obstacles in an instant. Then, charging forward like a mountain, it pursued the human, uprooting and smashing countless trees and boulders along the way.

In this strange world, amidst terrifying carnage, the weakest Qiao San had become the lowest rung in the food chain. All he could do was run—and pray desperately to gods and ancestors for protection!

How could a mere human outrun a half-bull, half-demon monster?! As Qiao San faced certain death, his survival instinct kicked in. He stopped running, turned around, crouched low—and with a powerful leap, shot straight into the air like an arrow!

“Swish…” A cold gleam suddenly flashed through the killing aura-filled void, a blinding light so solid it blocked the demon bull’s vision.

At that moment the light flashed, the heavens seemed to compress violently, the entire space collapsing into one single, decisive strike—Qiao San’s turning counterattack!

“Roar—” The demon bull’s roar was exceptionally agonizing. The human’s sword slashed through the air, swift as lightning, fierce as thunder. The moment it pierced through, the entire Ghost Forest seemed stunned by this sudden transformation, frozen into eternity, its moment becoming an undying memory!
