There are twelve months in a year, each consisting of thirty days, and each day comprises one hundred kē (an ancient Chinese unit of time). Thus, a month totals thirty thousand kē, and ten months amount to three hundred thousand kē.
Internally, within a year one refines the elixir of three hundred thousand kē; externally, one’s body gains the extension of three hundred thousand years. On a grand scale, within a single day, one gathers ten thousand three hundred and fifty breaths to form the embryo; on a smaller scale, within twelve hours, energy travels the distance of eighty-four thousand li (a traditional Chinese unit of distance).
Therefore, it is said: “Seize the single yang point of energy from heaven and earth; gather the qi of the sun and moon. Circulate true water within the lead furnace, and propel true fire inside the cinnabar cauldron.”
Among the Daoist schools of the world, there are alchemical furnaces and talismanic lineages. Within the bitter sea of worldly existence lies the return to one’s origin and the restoration of primal essence.
