“Mei Qing, are you alright now?” Bi Zhen’s face still bore traces of panic as she hurried over to Mei Qing, helping him to sit on a nearby low couch.
“I’m fine, I’m fine… What was that just now?” Mei Qing had already regained his senses. Seeing the deep concern on Bi Zhen’s beautiful face, he quickly tried to comfort her.
Bi Zhen examined him from head to toe, confirming that Mei Qing had indeed recovered. Only then did she let out a sigh of relief, slightly scolding him, “You scared me to death. You never make things easy for others. The one I just called upon was one of the Six Ding and Six Jia spirits.”
“Six Ding and Six Jia?” Mei Qing exclaimed in surprise, “That actually works?… My dear, you’re amazing.”
Mei Qing struggled to find words to express his feelings. Although he wasn’t deeply familiar with Daoist magic, he had at least heard of the Six Ding and Six Jia. In the classic tale “Journey to the West,” whenever Master Tang encountered danger, while his disciples were off figuring out rescue plans, the Six Ding and Six Jia spirits, along with the Five Directional Guardians, would temporarily take on the role of bodyguards, ensuring that this professional hostage wouldn’t be harmed by various kidnappers before the rescue mission concluded.
“Oh, it’s not that impressive,” Bi Zhen replied. “The Six Ding and Six Jia techniques aren’t something our Dan School specializes in. If anyone is truly skilled in this art, it would be the practitioners from the Three Mountains sect known for their talisman arts. Even among the Talisman sect, only true disciples with proper lineage can learn such techniques. What I used just now was a magical artifact gifted by a senior practitioner.”
Saying this, Bi Zhen pulled out a small wooden seal hanging from a red string around her neck and showed it to Mei Qing.
The Six Ding and Six Jia summoning technique requires a specific artifact known as the Six Ding and Six Jia Seal. Of course, Bi Zhen’s was not the original seal but a secondary one, hence smaller in size and convenient for personal carrying.
As Bi Zhen held up the wooden seal for Mei Qing to see, anyone else in the world seeing such a magical item would surely examine it with great interest. However, although Mei Qing’s eyes were fixed on it, they were clearly not focused on the tiny wooden seal.
The seal had been hanging close to Bi Zhen’s chest, and when she pulled it out, her robe naturally loosened a bit. Daoist robes are usually loose-fitting, and this slight movement inevitably revealed a glimpse of her charms. Mei Qing’s eyes followed that enticing line, silently admiring: My dear wife not only looks good, but she’s also well-endowed beneath her robes…
“I told you to look at the seal, what are you staring at?” Bi Zhen noticed something odd in Mei Qing’s gaze. Following his line of sight, she looked down and immediately realized what was happening. Her face flushed red with embarrassment as she quickly covered her chest.
“Looking at the seal, looking at the seal—I’m looking at it right now,” Mei Qing replied, grabbing the wooden seal Bi Zhen tried to pull back. His eyes didn’t waver at all as he brought the small wooden seal to his nose and sniffed it lightly, saying, “I wonder what kind of wood this seal is made of—it smells so good…”
Bi Zhen explained, “In Daoist magical artifacts, besides the commonly used peach wood, thunder-struck jujube wood is considered superior. This small seal is indeed made from thunder-struck jujube wood. However, while this wood is excellent for crafting magical items, I’ve never heard of it having any particular fragrance…” She paused mid-sentence, suddenly catching the mischievous glint in Mei Qing’s eyes. She instantly understood—this guy wasn’t really talking about the wood. He was sniffing the seal because it had been kept close to her chest, absorbing the scent of her body.
Feeling extremely embarrassed, Bi Zhen felt weak in her limbs and hurriedly tried to push Mei Qing away. But before her hand could reach him, her mischievous partner had already pressed himself against her, tightening his arm around her slender waist. He lowered his head and kissed her fragrant lips, while his other hand, as smooth as a fish, slipped through the loosened collar of her robe and slid inside her chest.
Just moments ago, this Daoist immortaless had been invoking divine spirits with immense power, but now she had transformed into a tender, soft, and compliant lamb in his arms. She felt his warm, fragrant breath, the softness of his lips, the smoothness of his touch, and the sight of her blushing face and breathless expression only intensified Mei Qing’s affection.
The two embraced on the low couch, entwined in each other’s arms for quite some time. Finally, they remembered that their spiritual cultivation was still incomplete and that they had yet to overcome their karmic trials, so they managed to retain a sliver of clarity and restraint.
Bi Zhen’s hair was disheveled, her face flushed red, and her Daoist robe barely covered her charms. She buried her face in Mei Qing’s chest, too shy to look up.
“Hehe, my dear wife, you haven’t told me yet—what’s the story behind this Six Ding and Six Jia Seal?” Mei Qing, with his mischievous hand still inside Bi Zhen’s robe, whispered into her ear while blowing warm breath onto her.
Bi Zhen let out a soft moan and, with the last of her strength, pulled his wandering hand away, weakly saying, “You naughty one! I won’t tell you this time…”
“Hehe, even better if you won’t tell me. Then I’ll just have to discipline you properly…” Mei Qing chuckled mischievously.
After a long while, the two finally separated. Bi Zhen managed to straighten out her Daoist robe, though it was inevitably wrinkled and her sash askew.
Still blushing, Bi Zhen shot Mei Qing a resentful glance, but seeing no trace of guilt on his face, she could only give up. After catching her breath for a moment, she began to explain the Six Ding and Six Jia spirits to Mei Qing.
The Six Ding and Six Jia are divine names in Daoism, serving as guardian deities of the Daoist tradition. Among them, the Six Ding spirits are female deities, while the Six Jia spirits are male deities. Their names and titles are as follows:
Six Ding Spirits: Ding Mao Spirit, named Wen Bo with the style name Ren Gao; Ding Chou Spirit, named Wen Gong with the style name Ren Xian; Ding Hai Spirit, named Ren Tong with the style name Ren He; Ding You Spirit, named Wen Qing with the style name Ren Xiu; Ding Wei Spirit, named Sheng Tong with the style name Ren Gong; Ding Si Spirit, named Ting Qing with the style name Ren Jing.
Six Jia Spirits: Jia Zi Spirit, styled Qing Gong with the name Yuan De; Jia Xu Spirit, styled Lin Qi with the name Xu Yi; Jia Shen Spirit, styled Quan Heng with the name Jie Lue; Jia Wu Spirit, styled Zi Qing with the name Chan Ren; Jia Chen Spirit, styled Yan Chang with the name Tong Yuan; Jia Yin Spirit, styled Zi Mi with the name Hua Shi.
As guardian deities of the Dao, the Six Ding and Six Jia spirits are often summoned by highly accomplished practitioners to command wind and thunder, subdue ghosts and spirits. However, the summoned spirits are not the deities themselves but merely their manifestations. The strength of these manifestations depends on the spiritual power of the practitioner performing the summoning ritual.
Although the term “Six Ding and Six Jia spirits” is commonly used, in practice, only one spirit is summoned at a time, rotating according to the principles of the Chinese sexagenary cycle. For example, the spirit Bi Zhen summoned earlier was the Jia Shen Spirit, Quan Heng Jie Lue Zhen Jun.
“Although the Six Ding and Six Jia summoning technique is relatively common, it’s mostly practiced by the Talisman sects. The Dan School rarely has practitioners skilled in this art. I was able to summon the spirit only because of this seal,” Bi Zhen finally regained her composure and spoke more smoothly.
Mei Qing looked at the small wooden seal in his hand. It was dark purple in color, with a hard and dense texture. Having studied ancient artifacts extensively and seen many items made from bamboo, wood, ivory, and horn, he had never encountered thunder-struck jujube wood before. The seal was no bigger than a fingertip, its surface engraved with ancient, hard-to-decipher characters, though he could barely make out the characters for “Jia” and “Ding.”
“What a shame such a powerful technique isn’t something our Dan School can learn. Maybe we should have joined the Talisman sect instead. Just with this seal, you can summon the Six Ding and Six Jia spirits? It seems so unremarkable, but thinking back to the divine might of the Jia Shen Spirit just now, it’s still hard to believe,” Mei Qing mused.
“Even within the Talisman sects, only true inner disciples can learn such techniques. Moreover, both the Dan and Talisman schools have their own strengths—you shouldn’t be swayed by this,” Bi Zhen explained. “Besides, the Six Ding and Six Jia technique isn’t that simple. This seal is only a secondary one, created by a master practitioner with immense magical power. It’s extremely rare and can only be used six times in total. Three times have already been used before it came into my possession, leaving only three more uses. Today’s use was the fourth, so only two remain.”
Mei Qing suddenly understood—it now made sense. If an ordinary practitioner with insufficient cultivation could easily summon such powerful deities as the Six Ding and Six Jia using just a secondary seal, then the Talisman sect would be overwhelmingly powerful without reason, and the cultivation world would already be in chaos.
Reflecting further, he recalled Bi Zhen mentioning earlier that she had a few magical artifacts gifted by senior practitioners. This Six Ding and Six Jia Seal must be one of them. Although he wasn’t yet deeply familiar with Daoist traditions, he could imagine how rare and precious such an item was, and how valuable each summoning opportunity was. Thinking about how Bi Zhen had immediately used one of those precious chances without hesitation when she saw him in trouble, he couldn’t help but feel deeply moved.
Looking into Bi Zhen’s eyes, which were filled with affectionate gazing, Mei Qing didn’t need any special technique to sense the deep love in her heart. He sighed softly, feeling as if his soul was melting in this emotional current. Gently pulling Bi Zhen into his arms, he kissed her deeply on the lips.
This time, unlike the previous passionate frenzy, their hearts and souls were even more intoxicated, and the kiss lasted much longer. Although Mei Qing was usually somewhat careless in manner, he had a deep-rooted sense of care and respect for Bi Zhen, vastly different from ordinary men in the world.
At that time, male chauvinism was considered natural in society. Although many men pursued Bi Zhen during the day, beneath their flattery lay hidden contempt and a desire to play with her emotions.
As a Daoist practitioner, Bi Zhen was naturally skilled in cultivating her inner character, especially since she had practiced the Guan Zhi method. Therefore, she could clearly perceive the difference in Mei Qing’s attitude compared to ordinary men. Now, seeing that although Mei Qing wasn’t eloquent with sweet words, his kiss was filled with deep tenderness and gratitude, she felt an indescribable sweetness in her heart. At that moment, she felt that even if using one summoning opportunity was costly, it was worth it. Even if she had to destroy the artifact completely for this moment, it would still be worthwhile.
As the saying goes, “It’s easy to find priceless treasures, but hard to find a loving partner.” Just like any young girl experiencing love for the first time, Bi Zhen felt her loneliness fading away, her heart fully devoted to Mei Qing. All her joys and sorrows now had a place to rest. In his arms, she forgot the entire world.
You are my Dao.
