Chapter 160: Liu Dashao’s Plan

Yang Baosan and Old Lady Zhang dared not look inside the room, which was pitch dark. When they heard a sudden “Aiyo!” from Liu Dashao, they had no idea what had happened. Too afraid to ask questions, their hearts were filled with both worry and fear.

The cat let out a piteous yowl and tried to roll over to throw off the small yellow weasel on its back. But suddenly, the weasel with one ear twitching struck first. As the big cat turned its head slightly, the weasel lowered its body and, like a venomous snake, lunged at the cat’s throat. This was truly a deadly move. The big cat, with an enemy behind and another in front, would likely not survive without human assistance. Seeing their advantage, the surrounding yellow weasels chirped joyfully and slowly surrounded the cat again.

Liu Dashao pushed against the door, ready to rush out.

But then the cat roared fiercely, flipped itself onto the ground, and pulled its thick hind legs back. In a flash, it kicked out, striking the one-eared weasel right on its sharp face. With a muffled grunt, the weasel rolled far away. When it stood up, its face was smeared with black blood, and it seemed to have lost one eye, crying out in pain with shrill chirps.

Yang Baosan and Granny Zhang dared not look inside the dark room, only hearing Liu Dashao’s sudden cry of “Aiyo!” They were unsure of what had happened but were too afraid to ask, their hearts filled with worry and fear.

The cat let out a sharp meow, attempting to roll over and shake off the small yellow weasel clinging to it. However, the weasel, named One Ear, seized the moment when the cat turned its head and swiftly struck, sinking its fangs into the cat’s throat like a venomous snake. This was the true killing blow. The cat, now under attack from both front and back, seemed unlikely to survive without human intervention. The surrounding weasels, sensing victory, chattered excitedly and began to close in again.

Liu Dashao pushed against the door, ready to rush out.

Just then, the cat let out a fierce roar, flipping onto its back. It retracted its powerful hind legs and then kicked out like lightning, striking One Ear squarely in the face. One Ear let out a muffled groan and rolled away, blood streaming from its face, likely having lost an eye. It screeched in pain.

The cat rolled back onto its feet, pinning the small weasel beneath its paw. It opened its jaws and bit down on the weasel’s neck, the sound of crunching bones echoing as it severed the weasel’s throat. The cat tossed the lifeless body aside and let out a triumphant meow, exuding an aura of dominance, like a little king.

Liu Dashao was overjoyed, thinking to himself that such a fierce cat had emerged in their small village. He wasn’t sure if this was a good or bad omen. The other weasels, intimidated by the cat’s ferocity, hesitated to approach. Suddenly, a sharp, eerie laugh echoed through the room, sending a chill down the spines of the three people inside, as if they had been doused with icy water.

Yang Baosan stammered, “Mr. Liu… that… that laugh… it’s going to be the death of us!” Liu Dashao tightened his grip on his sword, his eyes fixed on the door.

From the shadows beneath Yang Baosan’s rice pile, a dark figure slowly emerged, moving with deliberate slowness, as if performing on a stage. Liu Dashao thought to himself, “This is serious. The monsters in this house have even learned to put on airs?” The cat let out a trembling meow, clearly terrified, its fur standing on end. As the shadow drew closer, Liu Dashao’s heart raced. He thought, “Last night I saw all sorts of strange things, and now this!”

A weasel, about the size of a medium dog, swayed as it approached the cat. Its sharp face bore two small, eerie green eyes that glowed with an unnatural light. It licked its lips as if salivating over a delicious meal. Liu Dashao couldn’t fathom how a weasel could laugh. Was it truly a demon, as the old tales said? He secretly bit his index finger and drew a wolf-repelling charm on his sword, an ancient Taoist practice used to ward off wild beasts. At this moment, Liu Dashao wasn’t sure what other charms might be effective.

The large weasel let out another eerie laugh, and from beneath its belly, a small dark figure emerged, climbing onto its back. The figure seemed delighted, cackling with a sharp, sinister laugh that sent shivers down the spines of the three people inside. Liu Dashao saw the figure flailing its limbs, resembling a tiny infant. This terrified him, and he thought, “Isn’t that the child from the ghost cave? How did it end up riding a weasel?”

The infant-like creature, seeing the cat’s nervousness, tugged at the weasel’s ear, causing it to turn around. With a soft “pfft,” a faint black smoke emitted from the weasel’s rear. Liu Dashao realized with dread that the weasel had released a toxic gas.

In the countryside, when trapping weasels, people would use bamboo tubes to catch them. Once trapped, they would beat the weasel from a distance with a bamboo pole to make it release its gas before approaching. If one accidentally got a whiff of the gas, it would cause nausea and discomfort for hours.

The cat, caught off guard, was directly hit by the gas. Unlike humans, it couldn’t cover its nose. The noxious fumes caused the cat to become dizzy and unsteady, collapsing onto its back, exposing its soft belly.

The small creature urged the weasel forward, and with a few grunts, the other weasels closed in, their sharp mouths wide open, ready to bite the cat. Liu Dashao knew he had to act now or the cat would surely die. He shouted, “Hey!” and pushed the door open, leaping out. Yang Baosan, who had been watching intently, was startled by Liu Dashao’s sudden shout and collapsed to the ground in fear.

The small creature and its pack of weasels had been terrorizing the village for days, scaring dogs into hiding and people into staying indoors at night. They had grown bold and fearless. The sudden appearance of a man wielding a shiny object startled the weasels, causing them to scatter. The small creature, initially shocked, quickly turned angry, letting out a sharp cry and slapping the head of the large weasel, charging toward Liu Dashao.

Uncertain of the creature’s nature, Liu Dashao pulled out two talismans from his pocket and shouted, “Stop!”

The talismans, as if weighted, fell to the ground. Just as the large weasel was about to leap over them, the talismans emitted white smoke and burst into red flames. Although not a ghost, the weasel had an innate fear of bright light. The flames, being so close, singed off several of the weasel’s whiskers. It let out a sharp screech and leaped to the side, throwing the small creature off its back.

Liu Dashao felt a blur before his eyes as the infant-like creature lunged at his face. He cursed under his breath, “Damn, that was fast!” With no time to think, he raised his wooden sword to block, feeling a furry paw brush against his left cheek. Terrified, Liu Dashao pushed the sword outward, only to find nothing there. He looked down and saw the small creature, moving as if weightless, leap back onto the large weasel’s back.

The dark clouds in the sky began to part, and a pale moonlight shone through. Liu Dashao saw that the small creature, though humanoid, resembled a monkey more than anything. Its cold eyes glinted as it assessed Liu Dashao, the sudden intruder. The other weasels kept their distance, watching from afar. Liu Dashao thought to himself, “Though I don’t know what you are, I can’t lose face here.” He held his sword horizontally in his right hand and formed a Taoist exorcism gesture with his left, projecting an air of authority.

Facing the group of monsters without showing fear, Liu Dashao couldn’t help but admire his own bravery. Suddenly, the spot on his face where he had been touched began to burn with intense pain, as if on fire. The pain was so severe that Liu Dashao gritted his teeth, nearly crying out for his parents. Just as he was about to lose his composure, the small creature let out a long, piercing whistle. The weasels turned and fled like a shadow, leaving a cloud of dust in their wake, which left Liu Dashao deeply unsettled.

As the dust settled, only the large yellow cat remained, lying on its back under the moonlight. Liu Dashao picked up the cat, feeling its weight like that of a small pig. He thought to himself, “If this cat keeps growing, it might become a little tiger.” The pain on his face intensified, and tears welled up in his eyes. He quickly turned and walked back, pushing open the door of the hut.

As he entered, Yang Baosan let out a startled cry, “Aiyo, who’s there?”

The sudden cry, after all the chaos, made Liu Dashao break into a cold sweat. He quickly replied, “It’s me!”

Granny Zhang also exclaimed, “Amitabha! Are you alright, Dashao? What about my big yellow cat? Is it okay?”

Yang Baosan complained, “Why didn’t you give us a heads up? With all the ghostly wailing outside, you just barged in like that—you could’ve scared someone to death!”

Liu Dashao, wincing in pain, said, “Captain Yang, light the lamp quickly!” Yang Baosan, unaware of what had happened, hurriedly lit the lamp. As the light flickered on, Yang Baosan’s hand trembled, nearly dropping the lamp. He pointed at Liu Dashao’s face and said, “Aiyo, Mr. Liu, your face…”

Liu Dashao, realizing something was seriously wrong, handed the big yellow cat to Granny Zhang and said, “Captain Yang, we need to go to your house now. Quick!”

Granny Zhang took the cat and, seeing it unresponsive, was about to burst into tears when the cat suddenly twitched its paws and wagged its tail, showing it was unharmed. She tearfully hugged the cat tightly.

Yang Baosan, anxious and confused, led the way to his house. Liu Dashao’s urgency made him feel as if he were walking on clouds, his legs weak. “Aiyo, what’s going on in my house, Mr. Liu? Can’t you just tell me?” Liu Dashao and Yang Baosan pushed open the door, and Yang Baosan kept asking questions. Liu Dashao said, “Captain Yang, which room is yours?” Yang Baosan, hearing that his own room might be the problem, nearly fainted from fear.

He led Liu Dashao into his room, where Liu Dashao held up the lamp to a mirror. Yang Baosan asked nervously, “Is there something wrong with this mirror?”

Liu Dashao replied, “No, I just want to see what’s happened to my face!”

Yang Baosan was furious, thinking to himself, “Couldn’t you have said that earlier? You scared me half to death!” But since he needed Liu Dashao’s help, he held back his anger.

Liu Dashao looked at his reflection and was shocked to see that the side of his face where he had been touched had turned a dark, sickly color. He cursed, “Aiyo, that damn creature is poisonous!”

Yang Baosan asked urgently, “What poison? Is it your face, Mr. Liu?”

Liu Dashao thought for a moment and said, “I must have touched some dirt on the ground and got it on my face. But these evil creatures have left a lot of poison around your house!”

Yang Baosan panicked, “Aiyo, Mr. Liu, what should we do?” Liu Dashao whispered, “Let’s go back to Granny Zhang’s place. I think the big yellow cat might be the key to solving this.”

Yang Baosan gritted his teeth, “I knew those cats were trouble!”

Liu Dashao said, surprised, “Aiyo, Captain Yang, if it weren’t for those cats, you might have been in serious trouble by now!”

Yang Baosan was puzzled, “What do you mean?”

Liu Dashao explained, “Captain, when Lin Anxing came to your house that night, I knew it wasn’t good. It was thanks to that cat that the ghostly thing was driven away!”

Yang Baosan fell silent.

The two returned to Granny Zhang’s hut. Liu Dashao sat by the bed and saw that the yellow cat’s eyes had regained some spirit, indicating it was fine. He turned to Yang Baosan and said, “Captain Yang, this cat is a spiritual guardian! You can’t let Granny Zhang and this cat stay in this hut anymore!”

Yang Baosan stood up abruptly, “What are you talking about, Liu Dashao? What’s a spiritual guardian cat?”

Liu Dashao slapped his thigh, “When Granny Zhang told me this cat begged for food with a gourd, I knew it was special!”

Yang Baosan was confused, “What’s so special about it?” Liu Dashao explained, “This kind of cat is called a house-guarding cat!”

Seeing Yang Baosan’s wide-eyed expression, Liu Dashao continued, “As the saying goes, ‘When a person is down on their luck, even their dog turns cold; when a household prospers, a loyal cat appears.’ When a person is blessed with good fortune, spiritual cats and loyal dogs come to their door. But when misfortune strikes, even the most loyal dog won’t stay. Captain Yang, your team has been doing well, and your household is thriving. This is a sign of good fortune. But when this spiritual cat came to your door, you drove it away with a brick. Isn’t that like chasing away your good luck and inviting disaster? The recent troubles in your house are likely because you drove the cat away!”

Seeing Yang Baosan’s silence, Liu Dashao added, “Fortunately, Granny Zhang is kind-hearted and kept the yellow cat and the black dog. They’ve been protecting you from misfortune. You must take good care of Granny Zhang and the cat. I guarantee that good things will come your way, and your household will be safe!”

Yang Baosan, though still skeptical, half-believed Liu Dashao’s words. He thought to himself, “If there wasn’t some truth to this, why would Liu Dashao be so concerned about Granny Zhang and the cat?”

Liu Dashao touched his face and said, “Also, I need to do some work around your house to cleanse it. Prepare some millet for me!”

Yang Baosan’s eyes widened, “How… how much?”

Liu Dashao grinned, “At least twenty pounds!”

He then turned to Granny Zhang and said, “The big yellow cat might be needed again in a few days, Granny. I’ll come back to get it then.”

Granny Zhang asked, “You’re not going to harm the cat, are you?” Liu Dashao reassured her, “Of course not. I think the cat will be essential in bringing peace to the village.”

Yang Baosan reluctantly brought a bag of millet, and Liu Dashao instructed him to bring his prized flashlight. The two went around the house, drawing talismans and burying some of the millet. Liu Dashao said the rest needed to be buried throughout the village. After a hurried farewell, Liu Dashao shouldered the bag of millet and left.

Liu Dashao was delighted. He thought to himself: who would have thought such a mighty cat would come from our little village? Yet he couldn’t tell whether it was a blessing or a curse. As the yellow weasels were stunned by the cat’s might and hesitated to approach, a sharp, mocking “Hei!” echoed in the room. The three people inside felt as if a bucket of icy water had been poured over their heads, chilling them to the bone.

Yang Baosan’s voice trembled as he spoke: “Mr. Liu… that… that… thing laughing just now could kill a man!” Liu Dashao tightened his grip on the sword, eyes fixed intently outside.

From the lower part of Yang Baosan’s rice field, a dark shadow slowly emerged. It moved extremely slowly, as if walking a catwalk. Liu Dashao thought: “Oh no, the demon in this house has even learned to pose?” The big cat let out a frightened meow, its voice quivering with fear. Its fur bristled, standing straight up along its back. As the shadow approached, Liu Dashao’s heart sank. He thought: “Last night I saw all sorts of strange things, and now this creature shows up again!”

Before their eyes came a yellow weasel nearly the size of a half-grown dog, swaying as it walked toward the big cat. Its sharp face bore two pea-sized eyes glowing with eerie green light. It licked its lips, as if drooling over a delicious meal. Liu Dashao racked his brain but couldn’t figure out how a yellow weasel could laugh. Could it be that the old tales of demons becoming real were actually true? He secretly bit his fingertip and drew a wolf-repelling talisman on his sword—an ancient charm used by Taoist priests to ward off wild beasts in the mountains. At this moment, Liu Dashao didn’t know what other talisman might be effective.

Again, the big yellow weasel gave a sharp “Hei!” laugh. Suddenly, from beneath its belly, a black shadow flipped up and sat on the weasel’s back, seeming extremely pleased and continuing to emit sharp, eerie giggles. The three inside were chilled to the bone, their skin crawling with goosebumps. Liu Dashao looked closely and saw the shadow had limbs moving like a tiny infant. This sight startled him greatly. He thought: “Could this be that child from the ghost cave? Why is it riding a yellow weasel?”

The infant-like creature, seeing the cat’s tense state, tugged the yellow weasel’s ear. The weasel turned around. With a “Puchi!” sound, a faint black smoke burst from its rear. Liu Dashao thought to himself: “Oh no, it’s releasing poison gas!”

In rural areas, when catching yellow weasels, people used to place bamboo traps. When one got caught, they would strike the bamboo from a distance with a pole, waiting for it to release all its gas before approaching. If one was careless and caught by the weasel’s gas, they would feel nauseated and ill for a long time.

The yellow weasel released a fart, catching the big cat completely off guard. Unlike humans, the cat couldn’t cover its nose. As soon as it inhaled the gas, it became dizzy and unsteady on its feet. It let out two weak meows and rolled over, exposing its fat belly.

The small monster, riding the yellow weasel, approached. With a couple of grunts, a group of yellow weasels immediately surrounded the cat, their sharp mouths wide open, ready to bite. Liu Dashao realized if he didn’t act now, the cat would surely die. He shouted loudly: “Hey!” and kicked open the door, leaping out. Yang Baosan, watching Liu Dashao in awe, was just about to pluck up his courage to take a peek when Liu’s sudden roar scared him so much he collapsed onto the ground.

The small monster, leading a gang of yellow weasels, had been terrorizing the village for days, scaring even dogs to stay indoors and people too afraid to go out at night. It had long since grown arrogant, considering no other creatures a threat. Suddenly, a human appeared, holding a shiny object. The weasels were so frightened they scattered in all directions. The small monster was first startled, then furious. It screamed a high-pitched shriek, patting the big yellow weasel’s head, charging straight at Liu Dashao.

Unsure of the opponent’s strength, Liu Dashao immediately took out two talismans from his bag and shouted: “Freeze!”

The two talismans fell like heavy weights and landed on the ground. As the big yellow weasel was about to leap over them, white smoke rose from the talismans, bursting into red flames. Though not ghosts, the weasels had a natural fear of light. The flames were so close that they singed off several of the weasel’s whiskers. With a shriek, the weasel leaped sideways, throwing the small monster off its back.

Liu Dashao felt a blur before his eyes as if a baby were clawing toward his face. He cursed inwardly: “Damn it, so fast?” With no other options, he held his broken wooden sword in front of his face. A foul stench filled his nose as a furry little paw brushed past his left cheek. Horrified, Liu Dashao pushed the sword outward, only to hit nothing. He focused and saw the small monster darting across the ground like it had no feet, landing again on the back of the yellow weasel.

The dark clouds in the sky gradually dispersed, and a pale moonbeam shone through the clouds. Liu Dashao saw the small monster covered in fur, somewhat human in appearance but more monkey-like. Its eyes glimmered with a cold light, sizing up Liu Dashao, the unexpected challenger. The other yellow weasels kept a safe distance, watching the scene unfold. Liu Dashao thought: “Though I don’t know your true origins, I can’t afford to lose face here.” He gripped his sword in his right hand and formed a Taoist demon-subduing mudra with his left, standing tall and imposing.

Facing a group of monsters, Liu Dashao showed no fear. He couldn’t help but praise himself inwardly. Suddenly, the area on his face that had been touched began burning with intense pain, shooting straight into his heart and lungs. The pain was so unbearable that Liu Dashao almost cried out for his parents. Just as his dignified composure was about to collapse, the small monster let out a long, high-pitched howl. The yellow weasels immediately turned and fled, like a black shadow vanishing into the night. Dust swirled in the air, leaving Liu Dashao shocked and breathless.

As the dust settled, only the big yellow cat lay on its back under the moonlight. Liu Dashao approached and picked up the cat, feeling like he was holding a little pig. He thought: “If this cat grows any bigger, it might really become like a small tiger.” Just then, the pain on his face flared up again, making Liu Dashao wince and grimace, almost ready to call for his parents. As his dignified demeanor was about to be lost, the small monster let out a long howl. The yellow weasels turned and fled, like a black shadow vanishing into the night. Dust swirled in the air, leaving Liu Dashao shocked and breathless.

Liu Dashao rushed back to the hut, cradling the cat. As he pushed open the door, he heard Yang Baosan scream in terror: “Aiyo! Who’s there?”

He had not been frightened by the earlier chaos, but this scream made Liu Dashao break into a cold sweat. He quickly replied: “It’s me!”

Old Lady Zhang also cried out in alarm: “Amitabha! Master Dashao, are you alright? What about my big yellow cat?”

Yang Baosan complained: “Why didn’t you announce yourself? With all the ghostly howls outside, you suddenly barging in could scare someone to death!”

Liu Dashao, his face throbbing with pain, hissed through his teeth: “Yang Captain, quickly light a lamp!”

Unsure of what had happened, Yang Baosan hurriedly lit the lamp. As the light illuminated the room, his hand trembled so violently he nearly dropped the lamp. Pointing at Liu Dashao’s face, he exclaimed: “Aiyo! Mr. Liu, your face…”

Knowing something was wrong, Liu Dashao handed the big yellow cat to Old Lady Zhang and urged: “Yang Captain, we need to go to your house. Hurry! Hurry!”

Old Lady Zhang took the cat, and seeing no response, was about to burst into tears when the cat twitched its claws and wagged its tail. It seemed unharmed. Tears streaming down her face, she tightly hugged the cat to her chest.

Yang Baosan, anxious and impatient, rushed ahead to open his door. Liu Dashao had said they needed to go to his house, and not knowing what was wrong, he ran as if floating on clouds, his legs weak with fear. “Aiyo! What’s wrong at my house, Mr. Liu? Please say something!” he kept shouting as Liu Dashao pushed the door open. Liu Dashao asked: “Yang Captain, which room is yours?” Upon hearing that even his own room might have a problem, Yang Baosan was nearly frightened out of his wits.

He led Liu Dashao into his room, where Liu Dashao held up the lamp, illuminating a mirror. Yang Baosan anxiously asked: “Is there something wrong with this mirror?”

“No,” Liu Dashao replied, “I just want to see what my face looks like!”

Yang Baosan was furious inside, thinking: “Why didn’t you say so first? You scared me half to death!” If it weren’t for his current predicament and reliance on Liu Dashao, he would have already started cursing.

Looking into the mirror, Liu Dashao was startled. Half of his face where he had been touched was now dark and blue. He cursed loudly: “Aiyo! That poisonous little bastard!”

Yang Baosan hurriedly asked: “Poison? Is it your face, Mr. Liu?”

Liu Dashao thought for a moment and said: “I touched some dust on the ground and rubbed it on my face. But these evil creatures have left a lot of poison around your house!”

Yang Baosan panicked: “Aiyo! What should I do, Mr. Liu?”

Liu Dashao whispered: “First, let’s go back to Old Lady Zhang’s place. This matter is probably related to that big yellow cat!”

Yang Baosan gritted his teeth: “I knew those cats were no good!”

Liu Dashao exclaimed: “Aiyo! My dear Yang Captain, if it weren’t for those cats, you might have already been in trouble!”

Yang Baosan was stunned: “What do you mean by that?”

Liu Dashao explained: “Captain, that night when Lin Anxing came to your house again, it was definitely no good omen. Fortunately, the cat drove away that human-like demon!”

Yang Baosan fell silent.

The two returned to Old Lady Zhang’s hut. Liu Dashao sat on the edge of the bed and saw that the yellow cat’s eyes had regained some spirit. Knowing the cat was fine, he turned to Yang Baosan and said: “Yang Captain, this cat is a spiritual cat! You can’t let Old Lady Zhang and this cat continue to live in this hut!”

Yang Baosan stood up in surprise: “Ai! Mr. Liu, are you making this up? What do you mean by a spiritual cat?”

Liu Dashao slapped his thigh: “As soon as Old Lady Zhang told me the mother cat carried a ladle begging for food, I knew this cat was special!”

Yang Baosan was confused: “What’s so special about it?” Liu Dashao replied: “This kind of cat is called a house guardian cat!”

Seeing Yang Baosan with his mouth wide open, Liu Dashao continued: “There’s an old saying: ‘When people are down, even dogs show no affection; when a household thrives, even cats show loyalty.’ When a person is on a lucky streak, spiritual cats and loyal dogs will come to their door. But when a person is on a bad streak, even loyal dogs won’t stay. Yang Captain, everything in your team has been going smoothly, and your household is prosperous. This is a sign of good fortune. This spiritual cat came to your door, but you drove it away with a brick. Isn’t that clearly driving away good luck and inviting misfortune? The recent disturbances at your home are probably caused by you driving away the cat.”

Seeing Yang Baosan lowering his head in silence, Liu Dashao added: “Fortunately, Old Lady Zhang is kind-hearted and kept the yellow cat and black dog. This time when you were in trouble, didn’t these animals save your life? You must take good care of Old Lady Zhang and the cat. I guarantee that you will have continuous good fortune and peace in your household!”

Yang Baosan, troubled in mind, believed half of what Liu Dashao said. He thought: “If there wasn’t some truth to this, why would Liu Dashao speak up for this old woman and the cat?”

Liu Dashao touched his face and said: “Also, I need to do some work around your house to clean things up. Help me prepare some millet!”

Yang Baosan’s eyes nearly popped out: “How… how much?”

Liu Dashao chuckled mysteriously: “At least twenty jin!”

Then, turning to Old Lady Zhang, he said: “This big yellow cat might be needed in a few days. Old Lady, I’ll come to catch it again!”

Old Lady Zhang asked: “Is it going to harm the cat’s life?”

“Of course not,” Liu Dashao replied. “I see that to calm things down in this team, this cat is indispensable!”

Yang Baosan, holding a bag of millet with a reluctant expression, came over. Liu Dashao asked him to bring his precious flashlight. The two went around the front and back of the house, drew a few talismans, and buried some of the millet. Some of the millet, Liu Dashao said, needed to be buried in various parts of the village. After hastily bidding Yang Baosan farewell, he left with the millet on his back.
