Chapter 99: The Bankrupt Old Lady

After several days, Xia Yu returned to the body of the white cat, and he still felt somewhat unaccustomed.

He rose from the soft cat bed and ran around the bedroom twice to get used to the feline body.

Hearing noises in the room, a group of maids entered. Some washed Xia Yu’s face, some groomed his fur, and others set up the litter box for him.

Xia Yu kicked the litter box aside. He had no intention of doing such things in public.

After yawning, he allowed the maids to tidy him up, then ate cat food and drank cat milk before walking out of the house and wandering around the villa.

He wasn’t aimlessly wandering—he was looking for Elma and Tina.

On the third floor, Xia Yu found both of them at once. Elma and Tina were in the study.

The two were talking when they heard the sound of the door opening. Elma looked over and, seeing it was Xia Yu, relaxed again.

“Meow,” Xia Yu made a cute sound, closed the door, jumped onto the desk, and openly listened to their conversation.

“Tina, I’ve hidden some things underground at our hometown. When you grow up and can go out by yourself, you can go get them,” Elma’s face bore a smile, but her voice lacked joy.

“Grandma?” Tina felt worried; she sensed that Elma’s emotions were off.

“It’s okay, don’t panic no matter what happens.” Elma picked up Xia Yu, placed him in Tina’s arms, “Just remember that there’s a gift I left for you under our hometown. Remember to go get it when you grow up.”

Then she patted Tina’s head and gently pushed her, “Alright, go play with Miaomiao.”

Resting in Tina’s arms, Xia Yu watched Elma. The old woman didn’t even call him Mimi anymore; this situation must be very serious.

It was likely that something would happen in the next few days.

After confirming that something would indeed happen, the panic in Xia Yu’s heart vanished. The telepathic warning had already done its job; once he became aware, it wouldn’t warn him again.

Elma had brought this upon herself, but it was hard on Tina.

Xia Yu licked the girl’s face to comfort her.

“Giggle giggle,” Tina happily lifted him high.

The two played on the grass behind the villa.

Much sooner than Xia Yu had expected, at noon, a police car arrived at the villa.

Three officers got out of the car and walked upstairs.

Tina anxiously hugged Xia Yu tighter. Wanting to find out what had happened, Xia Yu broke free from the girl’s arms and followed the officers upstairs.

The officers were not wary of a cat, so he sneaked into the scene unnoticed.

“Mrs., you really did well,” the leading white officer said to Elma, who was sitting on the sofa.

Elma’s face was pale, “I can tell you where I hid Elma, but I have conditions.”

Said she had hidden Elma? A knot formed in Xia Yu’s mind.

A second later, the knot unraveled—he understood. The old woman wasn’t really Elma; she had impersonated someone else.

“No need, we’ve already rescued the real Mrs. Elma,” the officer put handcuffs on the old woman’s wrists, “Now you can just look forward to spending the rest of your life in prison!”

“What will happen to my granddaughter?” Elma asked again.

“We’ll contact your relatives. If someone is willing to adopt her, we’ll send her there. If not, we’ll take her to an orphanage,” said another black officer.

Compared to the leading white officer, the black officer seemed much gentler, as he admired the old woman.

He said, “You’re truly a bold gambler. No one in District Two knew Elma, and you looked quite similar. Once you presented the documents, no one doubted you!”

“But computers will tell us where we made mistakes,” the white officer said.

“This is just bad timing. If it were last century, this would have been a perfect crime!” the black officer marveled.

Thanks to the relaxed procedures of the District Two police, from their conversation, Xia Yu basically understood the situation.

The old woman had encountered an Elma who looked similar to her and came to District Two with complete documents to claim an inheritance. She had evil intentions and switched places with the real Elma.

Just as the black officer said, if it were last century, the old woman would hardly have been discovered.

But reality has no “what ifs.”

The two white officers took Elma away, while the black officer stayed behind; he had other matters to attend to.

Twenty minutes later, a bus arrived at the villa, and professionals disembarked to inspect the items inside the house.

They needed to find out exactly how much money the old woman had squandered.

Xia Yu had no interest in following them and went to Tina’s side to comfort the girl.

Tina understood what had happened. She didn’t cry or make a fuss; she just stood on the grass, watching the personnel inspect the villa.

At 2:30 PM, another car stopped in front of the villa.

Out came two young people. The youths greeted the black officer first, then approached Tina.

They were there to take Tina to the orphanage first.

“Hello, are you Tina?” the female youth tried to communicate with Tina, but she remained silent.

She just held Xia Yu tightly in her arms.

After several failed attempts, the two young people gave up trying to communicate and pulled Tina toward the car.

“Wait a minute!” an old man came out from the house, “Leave the cat. This cat is Mrs. Elma’s property.”

Approaching Tina, the old man reached out his hand toward the girl.

As soon as he spoke, Xia Yu was ready to flee. After all, how could a human catch up with a cat?

But Tina held him too tightly, so he couldn’t break free.

Pushing aside Tina’s hands, the old man grabbed Xia Yu.

At the moment he was touched, a sense of danger surged in Xia Yu’s heart.

He couldn’t stay here—it was dangerous!

He tried to break free, but the old man held his neck skin tightly, so Xia Yu could only attack the man’s arm.

However, the sleeves and gloves blocked the attack, rendering it ineffective.

Another person came out from the house, holding a cage.

Once inside the cage, it would be hard to get out.

The sense of danger intensified. Xia Yu continued to struggle while calmly thinking about what to do.

Judging from the sense of danger, the real Elma was probably not a person who was kind to pets.

At this point, there was no choice but to enter the cage first?

Xia Yu looked at the cage again. It had a lock, which he could not pick.

At this moment, seeing Xia Yu struggling fiercely, Tina grabbed the old man’s hand.

“Let go!” The old man shook his arm, pushing Tina aside.

The girl fell to the ground.

“My God, what are you doing!” The black officer ran over, “You bastard, give the cat back to her. It’s just a cat!”

Glancing at the black officer, the old man placed Xia Yu on the ground and, with his subordinates, turned and left.

Shaking his fur, Xia Yu glanced at the black officer.

Although the black man had likely helped out of resentment towards the rich, the result was indeed helpful. Who knew what kind of danger that sense of crisis might have warned of?

He would repay the favor someday.

Together with the two youths, Xia Yu and Tina arrived at the orphanage on the edge of the city.

“The two aunts at the orphanage are very kind, but you must be careful with the little troublemakers. Don’t play where the aunts aren’t around,” the female youth reminded Tina.
