Chapter 345: The Bear Who Unbuckles the Belt

Maybe he should run away with Meimei?

Run to the northern forest. With his abilities, those wild beasts would be no match for him. Then a bear and a human could live a happy life together.

Although he couldn’t stay in the brown bear’s body forever, before leaving, securing a safe place for Meimei might perhaps be possible.

Holding a crude map, Xiong Yu came before Meimei and pointed north.

The girl thought for two seconds, glanced at the nearby soldiers, and leaned close to Xia Yu’s ear whispering, “Are we going north together?”

She also knew these soldiers would never go north.

Xia Yu nodded.

Meimei frowned in hesitation for a while, then nodded too.

At this moment, the future changed, and Xia Yu gained a new telepathic ability.

The telepathy told him that the north also held dangers, similar to the south.

What kind of danger?

Xia Yu didn’t think any wild animal could challenge a top predator like a brown bear, unless it was something like killer bees or diseases that couldn’t be directly resisted. Even the provisional government’s troops wouldn’t be able to come from the mountains northward.

Perhaps the danger came from nearby.

Xia Yu glanced at the soldiers of the guard unit. These people might not be trustworthy. If he didn’t allow them to take Meimei away, they might attack.

With over a dozen guns, in a direct confrontation, Xia Yu didn’t feel confident in fighting them head-on. He hadn’t become arrogant enough to think he could.

Shaking his bear paw, Xia Yu indicated they shouldn’t go north anymore.

Although Meimei didn’t understand the situation, she still agreed. Taking the nearby honey jar, the girl wanted to continue feeding the bear, but Xia Yu stopped the jar, indicating he didn’t want to lick now.

He rechecked the danger level in the south again. It was about the same as when he initially tested it, like jumping down from a four-story building—meaning either death or disability.

The danger level in the west was certain death.

In Xia Yu’s heart, he had already decided to retreat.

This wasn’t his own body. Even if he died, he would only lose one slot. But in other words, since it wasn’t his body, he had no right to decide for the brown bear to go to certain death.

Originally, Meimei and he had no deep connection. If it weren’t for the bear wanting to stay close to the girl, he would have taken the bear elsewhere long ago. Since the provisional government had already taken people, they certainly wouldn’t be lenient toward a bear like him. Anyway, the provisional government wasn’t planning to kill the girl, so it was better not to get involved in this matter.

As he thought this, the brown bear’s emotions changed. Xia Yu could feel the bear’s angry roar.

The bear sensed his hesitation and was resisting.

After thinking for a moment, Xia Yu sent feelings of fear to the bear, letting it know that this journey could indeed be fatal.

The bear remained angry, indifferent to the fear.

Since the bear itself thought this way, Xia Yu had no objections anymore.

He just hoped the telepathy could be somewhat reliable, avoiding all dangers along the way.

He should have upgraded his telepathy level more, but now it was too late.

Right now, he couldn’t leave the bear’s body, or else who knew what dangerous actions the bear might take.

His original body was in Afang. He would have to fly to Yaoguang, find the white cat, re-register the slot, and only then could he start practicing skills on the white cat.

The white cat’s bonus had not yet reached level 3, and he couldn’t exit midway within eight hours. That meant a round trip would take at least ten or more hours, which was too long.

Similarly, seeking help from the An and Yu families, aside from whether the An and Yu families could intervene in a regional war, even if they could, it would take days.

Lifting his head, he glanced at the soldiers inside the house. The soldiers were filling their water bottles in preparation.

Three minutes later, the group set off on the road.

The guard unit captain walked ahead, holding a compass to lead the way.

Xia Yu, Meimei, Ahwei, and Ahhua walked in the middle, surrounded by soldiers.

Meimei had good physical condition, but not as good as the soldiers. Combined with the difficult mountain path, after walking for three hours, she was already out of breath.

Ahwei walked forward to discuss with the guard unit captain whether they could make a stretcher. During forced marches, only a four-person shared stretcher was practical; no one could carry another person alone.

However, a bear could.

While Ahwei and the captain of the guard were agonizing over their insufficient preparations, they noticed the brown bear, which had been walking upright, suddenly crouch down, letting Meimei climb onto its back.

There was nothing on the bear’s back to secure her position. Meimei bent forward, wrapping her arms around Xia Yu’s neck, lying on his back.

Who would have thought of this?

Ahwei and the others were stunned, not expecting Bear Yu’s functions to be so diverse.

After Xia Yu let out a growl, they reacted and continued forward, though occasionally glancing at Xia Yu.

One soldier took out a leather belt from his waist, intending to give it to Meimei as a rein.

Xia Yu bared his sharp teeth, and the soldier silently withdrew his hand.

Before he could fully withdraw, Xia Yu snatched the belt. However, he wasn’t preparing to tie it around himself; he just felt it might come in handy someday.

One belt couldn’t secure the bear’s waist, so Xia Yu grabbed two more, tying them together to barely make one belt.

The group continued forward, with no issues except that three soldiers had to hold up their pants.

They walked for another two hours, nearing evening, when the group paused for rest.

Ahwei pulled out the map and estimated, “We should be here now. At this speed, we can exit the forest in another twenty hours.”

“By then, even if the provisional government’s troops are really stupid, they should have learned about our escape. The road ahead might not be easy,” said the guard unit captain.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s difficult. They won’t be able to track us in the forest. The only concern is if they predict the village we’re heading to,” Ahwei adjusted the plan. “We won’t go to that village anymore. We need to move quickly; we’ll continue tonight.”

“Go at night? Are you crazy?” the guard unit captain said. Nighttime was when many predators hunted, like tigers, wolves, and bears.

These animals could see at night, and encountering them in darkness would mean a massacre.

“It’s okay, we have a bear,” Ahwei looked at Bear Yu.

The guard unit captain had no objections.

After resting a while, everyone continued forward.

As the sun was about to set, an alarm rang in Xia Yu’s mind.

He immediately took Meimei and hid behind Ahwei, looking around vigilantly.

Ahwei was startled, and the soldiers stopped walking, looking around too, but they saw nothing.

They looked at Bear Yu in confusion, who was equally puzzled. He had indeed suddenly sensed danger, but it was still far away.

The group continued forward, and the danger signaled by Xia Yu’s telepathy kept trailing them from afar, leaving him puzzled.

At night, their pace inevitably slowed. District 232 was a small district, not comparable to the larger districts ranked higher. They only carried civilian-grade flashlights from District 1, without advanced night vision equipment.

Moreover, fearing that light might attract enemies, they couldn’t use the flashlights, relying only on starlight to feel their way forward.

They walked like this for five more hours before stopping to rest until dawn.

The tired soldiers quickly fell asleep, leaving only Bear Yu and two night guards awake.

After an hour, as Xia Yu was also beginning to feel drowsy, the danger alarm in his mind suddenly intensified.
