“What did you say?”
The steward’s face darkened instantly.
Li Tan said indifferently, “Get out.”
“Do you even know who you are, daring to speak to me like this?”
The steward questioned coldly.
Li Tan curled his lips, “And what exactly are you, barking around here?”
“Just a good-for-nothing who can’t cultivate the arts, yet you dare to act so arrogantly. If I don’t teach you a lesson, who knows what will happen in the future?”
Looking at Li Tan in his red robe, frail and weak, the steward sneered inwardly. He vowed that starting tomorrow, this new son-in-law of the Lin family would have to go around him.
The steward sneered, “According to the Lin family rules, I will punish you with fifty strokes of the cane. Any objections?”
“Then tell me exactly which rule did I break?”
Li Tan asked calmly.
The steward looked at him mockingly, “Disrespecting elders.”
Li Tan glanced at the steward, “Daring to call yourself an elder in front of me, who gave you the courage?”
The steward replied calmly, “Who gave me the courage?
Naturally, it was the head of the family. He entrusted me to take care of the young miss. If I let you run wild like this, what would become of her?”
“You’re just a fox borrowing the tiger’s might.”
Li Tan sat on the bed impatiently.
The steward narrowed his eyes and looked for an excuse to scold him, “How dare you! Get up immediately; don’t soil the young miss’s bed!”
“Dare?
It’s you who dares, isn’t it? I am the young master of the Li family, while you’re nothing but a servant. Do you wish to discipline me in my father’s place? Have you grown tired of life?”
Although Li Tan had now completely lost his cultivation abilities, his gaze was sharp as a blade. The steward instantly felt a chill run through him, as if he had fallen into a cold cellar.
The cup, originally meant for the wedding ceremony, was thrown by Li Tan at the steward’s face and shattered on the floor.
“You! You dare to strike me!”
The steward broke free from the terrifying gaze, but still felt its lingering effects. He thought Li Tan seemed odd and instinctively became cautious.
“As the Lin family’s son-in-law, I suppose I still have the right to discipline subordinates. Once again, I say: get out.”
Li Tan’s voice was cold and unfeeling.
A cultivator with no abilities at all dared to speak to him, a mid-level earthly realm cultivator, like this! The steward did not feel anger but amusement.
“You’ve married into the Lin family as a pitiful son-in-law and actually think you’ve become a heavenly realm expert?
How ridiculous, how absurd!”
He was a mid-level earthly realm expert, and to be spoken to like this by an ordinary person was a first.
Shuffling sounds came from the servants eavesdropping by the door, pressing their ears against it.
“Hey, that useless fellow is done for.”
“Hope they don’t kill him.”
“Kill him? Probably not, after all, he is the son-in-law.”
“I say better he gets killed. Marrying into the woman’s family—such a disgrace. If it were me, I’d kill myself.”
The servants were all watching the show, expecting Li Tan to meet his downfall.
Crackling his knuckles, the steward was about to throw a punch.
Seeing this, Li Tan curled his lips, “You don’t know a good deed when you see one.”
The steward mocked, “Are you talking to yourself?”
Li Tan remained silent, or rather, he was too lazy to bother with him.
“Remember, you are no longer the eldest young master of the Li family, just a pitiful sacrificial lamb.”
As the steward gathered his fist’s momentum, a cold, ghost-like voice suddenly spoke.
“You suffer splitting headaches every night around the third watch.”
The steward’s pupils contracted, and he stopped abruptly.
“If you channel your energy into the meridians, your entire body will ache.”
The anger on the steward’s aged face vanished, replaced by confusion.
“The cause of this condition is your Fire Spirit Cultivation Technique.”
Confusion turned into shock.
“If I’m not mistaken, the physician told you that the condition will worsen over time, meaning your days are numbered. So,
you’re not too worried about me reporting you, right?”
Shock turned into terror.
Li Tan looked at him amusedly and added lightly, “However, I happen to know how to cure you.”
“Hmph, you?”
The steward’s face showed confusion and inner struggle. How could this useless fellow know about his cultivation technique and even methods of healing that the physicians didn’t understand?
Li Tan saw through his thoughts and chuckled lightly, “You should know that my family has been in existence for centuries and has collected countless ancient texts.”
“Master, please save me!”
As Li Tan finished speaking, the steward shivered, fell to his knees with a thud, and began kowtowing repeatedly. Seeing that Li Tan remained unmoved, he gritted his teeth, slapped his own face hard, and soon his face swelled up like a pig’s.
A group of quacks; this was merely a special symptom that a small number of people cultivating fire techniques might experience. However, using this, he could avoid many troubles.
Thinking thus, Li Tan pointed at the door in a bored manner, “Do I need to repeat myself again on what to do?”
“This servant will leave at once.”
The steward, as if granted a reprieve, crawled out in haste. However, as he lifted his head and hadn’t yet had time to tidy himself up, he was so frightened that his whole body trembled, and he stuttered out a few words: “Y-Young Miss?”
