Chapter 68:

After sending Qin Chaoyu home that day, Gu Qiuyan immediately called the capital to discuss with Han Yumin whether they should send their son to Yuzhou.

Han Yumin, who had risen to the rank of general and held a crucial national position—even leading the Han family to steady prominence—was certainly not the indecisive type. More often than not, he could steel himself to make the most appropriate decisions. After listening to his wife’s account, he immediately said, “This isn’t a big deal. Compared to our son being paralyzed and wasting half his life, this bit of hardship is nothing. Besides, don’t underestimate our son—he’s a soldier. Even if he’s injured now, the spirit of a soldier runs deep in his bones. I’m sure he’d agree. If you’re worried, we can arrange for a doctor to accompany him and take care of him on the way.”

Gu Qiuyan pondered for a moment and had to admit she was overthinking things. In the end, she nodded in agreement.

Both of them were people of swift action. The very next day, they arranged for Han Yixun to be sent to Yuzhou.

Given Han Yixun’s special condition, taking a civilian flight wasn’t suitable. For the first time, Han Yumin set aside his usual principles and requested the use of a private plane to transport his son to Yuzhou.

This would have been unthinkable in the past. Han Yixun, deeply influenced by his father Han Yingjin, had always adhered to strict integrity—never taking even a thread from the people or exploiting his position for personal gain. Otherwise, given his current status, it wouldn’t just be a matter of borrowing a plane; the state might have even assigned him one outright. But now, for the sake of his son, he had actually asked for this favor. It was undeniable—this was the heart of a loving father.

Given how rarely he made such requests, and especially for Han Yixun, who had just rendered outstanding service, how could the higher-ups refuse? They immediately arranged a plane for him.

The next day was clear and cloudless—perfect weather for flying. That afternoon, Han Yixun arrived in Yuzhou, accompanied by his younger sister, Han Shuying. She was Gu Qiuyan’s late-born daughter and the only girl in the Han family, making her particularly doted upon.

She had tagged along after hearing that the person treating her brother was a young university student. The idea that someone so young could possess such remarkable skills piqued her curiosity. Since she had just graduated and had nothing else to do, she secretly followed.

The Han family also owned property in Yuzhou, purchased by Han Yumin’s younger sister, Han Lanyi.

Han Lanyi was a formidable businesswoman whose company had been publicly listed for years. Strong-willed and sharp-eyed, every investment or project she undertook turned a profit. Today, her company ranked impressively among the nation’s top 500.

Years ago, she had predicted that real estate prices would rise nationwide and that land would appreciate in value. So, she bought properties and land in scenic areas and major cities. She even purchased plots for her nephews and nieces as gifts.

Han Yixun’s land was in Yuzhou.

For the wealthy, the value of a location depended on its scenery and environment—criteria that Han Lanyi’s chosen plot for Han Yixun perfectly met. After development, Han Yixun kept a few units for himself. Yuzhou was a beautiful place, and he had always thought that if he ever retired or could no longer serve as a soldier, he would settle there.

Originally, Gu Qiuyan had planned to stay in a hotel during her time in Yuzhou, since she wasn’t sure how long she’d be there and didn’t want to go through the hassle. But now that her son was coming, she might be staying for a while, so she had the house prepared and moved in.

Han Yixun was well taken care of by the accompanying doctor during the flight. The private plane was smooth, and he didn’t suffer much.

After landing, he still had the energy to greet his mother, who was waiting for him.

Seeing her son being wheeled by her younger daughter, Gu Qiuyan hurried forward and said with concern, “Let’s go back and rest first. I’ve already arranged for the doctor to come to our house at eight tonight. She’ll examine you then.”

Han Shuying pouted, unhappy at being ignored. She clung to Gu Qiuyan’s side, tugging at her sleeve and whining, “Mom, I’m here too! Why aren’t you paying attention to me?”

Gu Qiuyan had always been helpless against her daughter’s coquetry. She tapped Han Shuying’s head and said, “You—how old are you now? Still acting like a child. When will you ever grow up?”

Han Shuying stuck out her tongue playfully. “Well, it’s all because you indulge me! Besides, a daughter acting coquettishly with her mom is perfectly natural!”

“Fine, I can’t argue with you. Let’s go.”

Throughout this exchange, Han Yixun watched his mother and sister with a gentle expression.

At exactly eight that evening, Qin Chaoyu arrived at the Han family’s villa.

Han Shuying was the one who answered the door. The moment she heard the doctor had arrived, she jumped up and volunteered to greet her.

When she saw Qin Chaoyu, Han Shuying’s eyes lit up. She hadn’t expected the doctor to be such a young and beautiful girl—her flawless skin and figure were downright enviable!

If treating her brother hadn’t been the priority, she might have immediately grilled Qin Chaoyu for skincare tips.

Qin Chaoyu, too, was surprised to see a lively young girl open the door—likely Madam Han’s daughter. Carrying her medical kit, she nodded politely. “Hello, I’m Qin Chaoyu. I have an appointment with Madam Han to examine the patient.”

“Please, come in!” Han Shuying immediately stepped aside, ushering Qin Chaoyu inside with excessive enthusiasm.

Qin Chaoyu was both flattered and taken aback.

Han Shuying’s kindness had a straightforward reason—she was hopelessly drawn to good looks. Those with pleasing appearances easily won her favor, though her standards were exacting. Mere physical beauty wasn’t sufficient; one also had to possess the right temperament. Ordinary beauties failed to move her, but Qin Chaoyu perfectly matched her ideal.

The lights on the first floor were bright. Gu Qiuyan was waiting in the living room. After Qin Chaoyu entered, she skipped the small talk and led her straight upstairs to Han Yixun’s bedroom.

Han Yixun knew a doctor was coming to examine him that night. Truthfully, after so many doctors’ grim verdicts, he had already resigned himself to his fate. But since his family still held out hope, he cooperated.

So, he remained calm about this examination. If even the nation’s top experts deemed his injury irreparable, how could a young doctor possibly heal him?

When Qin Chaoyu entered, he was reading the news. As the Han family’s next heir, he had to stay informed about major national events. Even paralyzed, he maintained his habit of reviewing current affairs daily.

“Yixun, the doctor is here,” Gu Qiuyan said, knocking before pushing the door open.

Han Yixun set aside his tablet and looked up. “Mm.”

The moment Qin Chaoyu saw Han Yixun, she knew this man was extraordinary. Despite being bedridden and enduring constant pain, his gaze remained resolute, his expression serene, without a trace of despondency.

Even in adversity, he maintained his composure. Such a person, even if fallen to the dust, would one day soar again.

Qin Chaoyu stepped forward, set down her medical kit, and said, “I need to examine you. Pardon the intrusion.”

Though surprised that his doctor was such a young woman, Han Yixun cooperated without hesitation. He saw no issue with her examining him and readily agreed.

Han Yixun wasn’t the bashful type, and Qin Chaoyu was even less so. In her mind, there were only patients and healthy people—no distinction between men and women. Without ceremony, she pulled back the blanket covering him.

Since he was indoors, Han Yixun wore only soft, comfortable pajamas. His injury was recent, so his muscles hadn’t atrophied yet—they still looked strong and well-defined.

A few faint scars dotted his skin, but for a man, scars were no big deal. If anything, they added to his rugged charm.

After removing the blanket, Qin Chaoyu turned to her medical kit and retrieved the small hammer she had once used on Lian Huijie’s legs.

As she tapped and pressed various points along Han Yixun’s body, she occasionally asked about his sensations.

Only after thoroughly examining and questioning him about every area below his spinal cord did she stop and cover him back up.

Sitting on the edge of the bed to catch her breath, she motioned for Han Yixun to extend his wrist so she could take his pulse.

After checking his pulse, Qin Chaoyu fell into deep thought.

Throughout the examination, Gu Qiuyan and Han Shuying hadn’t dared to speak, afraid of disrupting Qin Chaoyu’s focus and causing a misdiagnosis.

Now that she was done but sitting there silently, the mother and daughter exchanged glances. What did this mean?

Finally, Gu Qiuyan asked, “Dr. Qin, can you treat him?”

Qin Chaoyu snapped out of her thoughts and met Gu Qiuyan’s worried gaze. “I was just thinking about what exactly caused Mr. Han’s condition. Since it wasn’t convenient, I didn’t inspect his wound, but I suspect he was injured by a weapon—one with tremendous force that damaged his spinal cord and caused his paralysis.”

As someone from ancient times who had spent her first modern years in the mountains, Qin Chaoyu genuinely didn’t know about firearms. As a medical enthusiast, encountering an unfamiliar injury naturally intrigued her, hence her deep contemplation.

Gu Qiuyan wasn’t sure whether Qin Chaoyu knew her son’s injury was from a gunshot, but that wasn’t important. All she wanted to know was, “Can you treat it?”

Qin Chaoyu thought for a moment before answering honestly, “Though both involve paralysis, Mr. Han’s injury is truly unique. It’s different from the car accident case I treated before. I’m not certain if I can heal him—I’ll need to study it further.”

This was the truth. Qin Chaoyu always spoke plainly to patients’ families, never hedging. If she could treat something, she said so; if she couldn’t, she admitted it outright.

But now, she was genuinely intrigued by this case. It wasn’t often she encountered a condition that stumped her, and she wasn’t about to let it go. “Madam Han, if you can wait, I’ll give you an answer this Saturday.”

Today was Tuesday—four days away.

Though slightly disappointed, Gu Qiuyan was relieved that Qin Chaoyu hadn’t outright dismissed the possibility like other doctors. Four days was nothing—she could wait. “Very well. I’ll await your answer on Saturday.”

Qin Chaoyu nodded solemnly, her gaze firm. She was determined to conquer this medical challenge!
