Chapter 236: Talent and Wisdom

The witch had been eagerly awaiting screams, cries of shock, and blood, but the person below swung their weapon with a few casual movements, somehow blocking all the invisible demonic blades!

Surprised, the witch felt a surge of excitement. She thought to herself that Qian Ye was indeed cunning, disguising himself as an ordinary human powerhouse. This should have revealed his true nature, right?

She quickly descended, and when she saw the face of the person below, she was taken aback. It was clearly a young girl in a white dress—where was Qian Ye?

However, her rage and murderous intent needed an outlet, and she didn’t care if she killed the wrong person. She raised her right hand, and instantly, dozens of invisible demonic blades appeared in the air. Even the cold Bai Kongzhao’s eyes showed a hint of panic.

At this moment, more demonic energy appeared in the air, forming countless intricate polygons, protecting Bai Kongzhao. Anwen then appeared, saying with a bitter smile, “She is my friend. For my sake, spare her!”

The witch responded indifferently, “Do I need to give you face?”

This statement was so powerful that even the usually calm Anwen changed his expression. Fortunately, no one else had followed, and only Bai Kongzhao was nearby.

Anwen took a deep breath, calming the rising flush on his face. His voice was deliberately composed, “Considering our identities, you must give me face.”

Anwen’s response was unprecedentedly firm, surprising the witch. The icy killing intent in the black mist around her intensified, and she said coldly, “Anwen, do you think your identity can make me do what I don’t want to?”

Anwen replied, “At least with my current status, you are not qualified to insult me.”

“What gives you the courage to speak to me like this?!”

“I simply can’t bear your unreasonable arrogance any longer.”

“You are seeking death, Anwen!”

“Perhaps you can kill me, but after killing me, your path to becoming a great lord will be cut off forever.”

The witch sneered, “Do you think, in the eyes of those old guys, you and I are equally important? If I kill you, I’ll have to pay a corresponding price? I don’t know where you get such confidence, thinking your talent has reached my level.”

Anwen coldly retorted, “My talent may not match yours, but my wisdom far exceeds yours. Who knows who will go further in the future!”

This surprised the witch even more. Her gaze fell on Bai Kongzhao, and she said, “Anwen, you were not like this before. Is it because of her that you have changed?”

Anwen also glanced at Bai Kongzhao and said calmly, “She is part of the reason, but not entirely.”

“As long as she is part of the reason, I will kill her to show you the cost of offending me!”

Anwen’s expression changed, but his eyes glowed brightly. With a two-meter-long sword in hand, he stepped forward, shielding Bai Kongzhao.

“Do you want to fight me?” The witch’s voice was icy. “Anwen, you should know the consequences of provoking me. Perhaps I originally just wanted to let her die swiftly, but now, I might first cut off her limbs.”

“You can do that, after you kill me.” The light in Anwen’s eyes grew brighter.

The witch fell silent for a moment, then said, “You think I dare not kill you?”

“No, I always knew you would do as you please. But today, I feel it’s necessary to make you understand that not being able to defeat you is not a reason for me to endure your insults!”

Anwen’s words were forceful, causing the witch’s demonic energy to fluctuate visibly.

“You are so fearless of death, is it because of her?” The witch’s voice became soft and flat, but Anwen’s expression changed. This kind of demeanor from the witch meant she was truly angry.

“It has nothing to do with her.”

The witch did not believe him. A demonic thread suddenly appeared beside Bai Kongzhao, wrapping around her neck. Sharp enough to wound even Qian Ye, the thread could easily decapitate the young girl.

Anwen’s expression changed, and gritting his teeth, he did not rescue Bai Kongzhao. Instead, he raised his long sword, and complex patterns appeared on the blade, directly piercing through the demonic mist towards the witch.

The witch sneered, and with a wave, dozens of demonic threads appeared, interweaving into a dense net blocking Anwen. However, she never expected Anwen to ignore the net and charge right through it!

Blood and demonic energy splattered in the air. Instantly, dozens of wounds appeared on Anwen’s body, and his face was cut into a grid of five horizontal and three vertical lines. His long hair was sliced into pieces, floating around him.

He had completely walked into a trap, and the demonic race was never known for their physical strength. Anwen was gravely injured. If not for his high-tier demonic energy, which was only slightly inferior to the witch, the net would have cut him into hundreds of pieces.

Anwen’s eyes burned with fierce flames. After breaking through the net, he charged forward, thrusting his two-meter-long sword into the protective demonic mist surrounding the witch!

A muffled groan came from the mist, which gradually dissipated, revealing the witch’s true form. Anwen’s sword pierced through her abdomen, the blade protruding from her waist. The witch’s blood turned into sparkling pearls on the blade, entangled in a fierce battle with Anwen’s demonic energy.

Despite the gruesome appearance, this injury was acceptable for a warrior of their level. Whether it was fatal depended on the outcome of the battle between their demonic energies.

The witch grabbed Anwen’s neck with her right hand, and said slowly, “If I want to, I can completely destroy you now!”

Anwen was unafraid, sneering, “Before I die, I can certainly deal you a final blow. Perhaps you are right, and I am not your match. But after killing me, you will never hope to ascend to the position of a great lord!”

The witch looked at Anwen as if she didn’t recognize him, and after a moment, she said, “You truly aren’t afraid of death. Why, because of her?”

“This question, you have asked several times,” Anwen said emotionlessly.

“Because you never answered,” the witch pressed.

Anwen snorted, refusing to say more, clearly not wanting to give a direct answer. The witch remained silent, just looking at him coldly, and they stood there in a stalemate.

Below, Bai Kongzhao stared at them, lost in thought.

At that moment, Aideng rushed over, stunned by the scene.

“You two, this, this…” Aideng stammered. After all, in the eyes of the entire demonic race, both the witch and Anwen were exalted figures.

“Sparring,” Anwen said expressionlessly.

The witch nodded.

“I lost,” Anwen said, withdrawing his demonic energy and pulling out his sword.

The witch did not move, but her fingers loosened, allowing Anwen to leave. As the sword was withdrawn, her body was engulfed in demonic mist, concealing her expression and injuries.

Anwen silently took out a vial of demon potion and inhaled it, surrounded by swirling demonic energy.

Compared to the witch, Anwen could not fully conceal himself, nor did he need to. When Aideng arrived, he had already seen everything clearly.

The crisscrossing blood lines on Anwen’s body were shocking. Each line was a deep, bottomless wound. Such injuries were not something a single vial of demon potion could heal.

Aideng took out two vials of demon potion and silently handed them over. Anwen took them without a word and inhaled them. These potions were of the highest quality, obtained from the Eternal Flame before they entered the Maelstrom. Aideng only had two vials.

After inhaling three vials, Anwen’s complexion improved, and the terrifying blood lines on his face began to fade. The witch remained hidden in the demonic mist, neither leaving nor showing herself.

Aideng coughed and said, “Since you have finished sparring, we can discuss the matter at hand. If we cannot find Qian Ye, should we continue to stay in the Wells of Stars? Or should we let the vampires and arachne stay, and let them do as they please?”

Aideng had discovered that while in the Wells of Stars, they would be extremely vulnerable, unable to defend against attacks from above. He did not see much gain in staying, and the risks would only increase with time. This was a traditional resource point for the Empire, and other human powerhouses might appear.

Furthermore, the vampires and arachne had been secretly researching for a long time, each developing tools suitable for their races. The demonic race had only learned about this recently, and even if they created source blood, its effects would be limited. There was no need to stay and shield the other two races from disaster.

Anwen shook his head, “I have mostly understood the principle of refining and converting source blood. The material differences are not so significant; the real key is the star energy condensed during the process. Let’s call it star energy for now. However, the stars we see are not real stars, at least not in the way we perceive them. Understanding their true and concrete forms, and why they appear as stars, is a very meaningful topic. I have a feeling that if we can study this phenomenon, our understanding of the world’s essence will leap forward.”

The witch interrupted coldly, “I am not interested in your theories. Get to the point.”

Aideng also seemed uninterested, as tangible combat power was the foundation for him. Unlike Anwen and the witch, he did not possess incomparable talent.

Anwen sighed and shook his head, “The point is, these stars represent different types of energy. While the ordinary stars may be similar and difficult to distinguish, the special ones, especially those that are exceptionally large or bright, often carry distinct powers. In other words, by targeting different stars, we can refine different types of source blood. Even if the prism blood pillar and spider eggs are not suitable for us, choosing the right star can still produce source blood that greatly benefits us.”

Aideng asked, “Benefit us too?”

Anwen nodded, “Source blood can enhance bloodline power in two ways: it can strengthen our strengths until they reach their peak, and it can also improve our weaknesses, making us even more invulnerable. For example, one thing that benefits all of us is enhancing our physical constitution.”

Hearing this, even the witch was intrigued.

Demonic secret arts did not require a strong body, but it was clear that a stronger body provided an advantage in both battles and cultivation. For example, Qian Ye relied on his extremely strong body to repeatedly break through the witch’s blockades. In his confrontation with Anwen, his physical strength was the key to victory.

Even the witch could not refuse a stronger body.

Aideng frowned, “How do we find such stars, and how do we harness their power once we find them?”
